PC EXCLUSIVE: Rib Hillis, Confessions of a Single, Hollywood Dad

We can't seem to get enough of Rib Hillis around the Daytime Confidential/Pop Confidential universe. The likeable ex-soap hunk (ABC's Port Charles; NBC's Passions)-turned-reality TV handyman ( ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Editiion; A&E's $100 Makeover) is just so, well—real— we just love chatting with him! This time Hillis opens up about what it's like being a single, Hollywood dad to 7-year-old twins Dane and Hannah. Hillis shares how essential it has been to keep a healthy, supportive relationship going with his ex-wife Melissa Blackler, as they navigate raising kids in Hollyweird.  He also gives us a glimpse into a typical day at the House of Hillis.

Pop Confidential: In addition to being an in demand model, TV host and actor, you're also a single father, sharing custody of your twins, Dane and Hannah. How do you balance auditioning, walking the runway and hosting shows like A&E's $100 Makeover, with raising a pair of tykes?

Rib Hillis: A lot of caffeine and a lot of help. But seriously, juggling a career and family is hard work, as any working parent will tell you. I try to schedule my work around when my kids are with their mother, but that is not always possible. When there is a scheduling conflict, I have a tremendous support system of close friends. I am also extremely close to my ex and her family, so we all just do our best to make it work out. Dad doesn't get as much sleep as he would like....but in the end, I would gladly sacrifice sleep to see my kids happy...and they are. READ MORE

Bernard's "World" View: In Defense of Christopher Goutman

Several days ago, I posted an entry about the fallout from the death of Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens) on As The World Turns. There were three central ideas in that piece. First, despite the very legitimate complaints that any given fan might have, ATWT is providing great human drama here at the end of its run. Second, Reid’s tragic passing and donation of his heart to Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) encapsulated that goal mainly by thrusting the Hughes’— the show’s core family since its very debut— front and center toward its conclusion. Third, given the soap opera wrapped production months ago, the idea of kicking a dead horse with unrelenting criticism isn’t going to make it win the Kentucky Derby.

I have not budged one iota from any of those positions and I am about to incur the wrath of a whole lot more of you by making what I know will be a very controversial statement to many: I believe that in these final days, executive producer Christopher Goutman has made mostly the right decisions.

VOTE: Supporting Soap Actress of the Decade

As the 00’s come to an end and we look forward to the 2010’s Daytime Confidential pauses to look back at the best of the past decade. In the coming days Daytime Confidential readers will be able to vote for their favorite soap actors and characters in a variety of categories.

Voting ends December 24 at midnight and readers' votes in all the categories will be discussed in a “Best of the Decade” podcast to air the week of January 28.

While lead actors and actresses may have all the limelight it wouldn’t be possible without the supporting actresses and actors they share their scenes with. The dynamic Lesli Kay won a Supporting Emmy in 2001 as Molly Conlan and was nominated in the same category for her The Bold and the Beautiful character Felicia Forrester. Who can forget Eden Riegel as All My Children’s Bianca Montgomery? The Young and the Restless’ Sharon Case keeps fans riveted as the lovelorn kleptomaniac Sharon Abbott.

While lead actors and actresses may have all the limelight it wouldn’t be possible without the supporting actors and actresses they share their scenes with. Would As the World Turns’ Katie (Terri Colombino) be as enjoyable without the talented Trent Dawson as Katie’s best friend Henry Coleman? Robin Strasser’s Dorian Lord is at her best when Tuc Watkins returns as David Vickers and brings out her humanity. Jacob Young’s JR Chandler battles his father– All My Children’s silver fox David Canary– Adam Chandler and together they give soap fans one of daytime’s best father/son dynamics.
