GLAAD has announced the nominations for their 20th Annual Media Awards, and whaddya know, both All My Children and As The World Turns, two daytime soaps who pimped their gay characters for nice ratings spikes whenever nothing else worked in 2008, yet stubbornly refused to tell anything resembling authentic stories for said characters have been nominated. Somewhere Sri Rao, is giving off that same "WTF?" look Faith Hill gave the year Carrie Underwood beat her out for that CMA.
Rao, previously unknown to daytime, penned a beautiful, articulate, universal love story for SOAPnet's criminally-ineligible-for-a-daytime-nod General Hospital: Night Shift. If SOAPnet's cable cousins are going to do it that much better than the "real" soaps, they have got to figure out away for these shows to compete for industry awards. They get a way with paying Night Shift's cast and crew daytime wages, so why aren't they eligible for daytime awards?
Note to GLAAD: Just because a program tells a gay story doesn't mean it should be recognized with an accolade. Tyler Perry has black people on House of Payne, but that doesn't mean he should receive an NAACP Image Award nomination for that modern day minstrel show mess. Oh wait, he did. Why do I bother again?
At any rate, which soap do you want to take home the award: All My Children, for their rushed, plot driven Bianca/Zach/Reese piece or As the World Turns, who gave Nuke such compelling obstacles as Ameera the Iraqi Nuke Hag, Student Council Elections Gone Wild and a randy Paw Paw struggling with his inner Nathan Lane, before climaxing —oh the irony in that statement—with the most chaste, insulting "love scene" since Lucy and Desi some how managed to conceive Little Ricky while sleeping in separate twin beds?

Jamey - Thanks for giving your take on this year's nominations. I wish that GN:NS was able to be nominated in the category as well. It IS a shame that the folks behind and in front of the camera for that show can't get nominated for their amazing work for their 2nd season.

Hey, I'm a ATWT/Luke and Noah fan.... but there's no doubt that GH/NS deserves the award and should have been nominated.

I've loved everything about the Rianca storyline.

NS will win, but I will go with Natalia and Olivia on GL. They are the hottest couple and if written right, they can explore their relationship more.

Neither ATWT or AMC deserves to win, but if I had to pick one it would be AMC just because of the kissing ban ATWT had to endure. I'm sure that alone goes against everything GLAAD stands for. While I don't like the Zach aspect of the Bianca and Reese story, they are exploring sexuality. Bianca and Reese did have a great scene a few weeks ago where they openly discussed their sexuality and previous relationships in a very adult manner. I was suprised at how adult the conversation actually was.

this is tough. I didn't watch Night Shift, I stopped watching AMC when it because the Ryan Lavery is perfect and should be obeyed show so my vote goes to ATWT even though 2008 was really not good in terms of storylines for them. 2007 was much better, even with Mistletoe-gate.
Oh, and I want to go on record that I am Black and I can't STAND Tyler Perry's work. None of it. But then I cheer on Boondocks every time they rip on BET. But that's another argument for another day.

Wouldn't NS fall into the Outstanding Drama Series category with other weekly dramas instead of the Daily Drama category with daytime soap operas? Plus, Kyle had a romance for three episodes.
As The World Turns produced an entire gay pride episode last year featuring Cyndi Lauper. She sang True Colors to Luke for heaven's sake. For that alone it deserves this award. Luke and Noah were on all year long as well while AMC only started their story at the end of the year.

Nightshift should be the winner even without a nomination. My life as a gay man is better than the drab that has been written. Thank RuPaul for the actors...
