Media Spat Erupts Between Star Jones and Barbara Walters

A media spat has erupted between former The View co-hosts Barbara Walters and Star Jones over Barbara Walters' recent appearance on the Oprah Show to promote her new memoir Audition. On the Oprah Show Walters talked in detail about the two tumultuous years on The View involving Star Jones leaving and Rosie O'Donnell's stint on the show.

Revealing that Star Jones was once the show's most popular host, Walters told Oprah that after Jones drastic weight loss (and gastric bypass  cover up) and turning into "bridezilla" during her wedding plans/promotion that audiences no longer felt they could relate to her and that ABC would not renew her contract. Enter Rosie O'Donnell's roller coaster year on The View.

Responding to Barbara's interview with Oprah Star told Us Magazine “It is a sad day when an icon like Barbara Walters, in the sunset of her life, is reduced to publicly branding herself as an adulterer, humiliating an innocent family with accounts of her illicit affair and speaking negatively against me all for the sake of selling a book. It speaks to her true character.” Perez Hilton is reporting that in Barbara Walters reps have released a statement saying  "I will not dignify this with a comment. Barbara's written words say it all!"

What do you think?

Barbara shouldn't be telling show secrets.

.

Babs chose Star to be on the show because of what Star could bring to the table, Star wasn't a charity case. It's not like Babs was pulling a Henry Higgins and pulled Star out of the gutter.

Barbara is using it or was it Oprah pimping out that fact to pump up her own show's ratings. I noticed that it was Oprah that lead with that star and even devoted a couple segments to it. It was an important time in her life. So important that she wrote it down in her autobiography. It happened of 30years ago yet we're talking about it like it happened yesterday.

This book is over 300 pages I doubt that part of her life took up more than a chapter.

Just because your ashamed doesn't mean that other people can't learn from your life. It this teaches anything it says nobody is perfect. She made it known to Edward Brooke that she was going to write about it and HE's fine with it. His family has already been notified from way before. She didn't blindside him.

As for being ashamed maybe she should be. But that doesn't overshadow her accomplishments and what she has done for female journalists.

It's not like she's a chemist who slept her way through an entire family. She's a real woman being real honest about who she was and now is.

Equarter, celebs require major talk show hosts to submit questions before hand. There is no way Babs didn't approve this line of questioning, plus she already put it in her book. Babs, while I am upset with her, is one of the shrewdest women in media, she knew what the talking points of this book would be. Especially in today's day of celeb journalism taking precedence over real journalism. And yes, I agree a person's life lessons can help others, but you have to balance that with who can be hurt by your admissions of sin. If someone elses family and/or reputation can be trashed, why do it? Why not say a powerful, married black man, and not name names?

Yep, a wildly successful ADA who rose to fame covering the OJ trial , who had also served as a legal analyst for Today was in the gutter. Whatever would she have done had Babs not come along? Give me a break. Babs knew Diane Sawyer was whipping that ass when it came to getting exclusives so she decided to do coffee talk and needed to surround herself with others to make it successful. I guarantee a daytime talk show starring Barbara alone would have tanked year one.

GO TEAM BABS GO!!!! They are both hoes but seriously there is no competition really...

Star Jones is yesterday's news. She once was respectable, but the View only showed us her true colors when she found out what she could get for herself as a celebrity. She's a greedy cow, fat or skinny. This recent court show of Star's? Flop. Star's image has been soiled for a while now. With her great life changes, she handled it all without grace or class. We all cheered for her to be finding happyness, and she let us down. I used to like her a lot actually...for many years she added a unique voice to the panel. Too bad stuff went to her head so quickly! The lying about surgery? The wedding? She was shameless and dishonest with herself, and it showed. Guess what? We are fickle as a viewing audience, and she was like poison to the live television atmosphere well before the end of her run. People were tuning out b/c of her crap!

Barbara is clearly a living legend, and has every right to tell it as she remembers it. The woman is not only a pioneer for women in journalism in the 70's and beyond, but she's also a pioneer for working mothers in the workplace. She reveals her pain about her childhood and sister very candidly and honestly, and I applaud her candor. It's refreshing.

I am willing to bet that the ABC execs didnt want Babs to say half the stuff she did about the View. But here's the thing... as we talk about with daytime all the time, the producers and execs are feared as the big bosses. Daytime needs all the help it can get, and everyone knows it, so everyone kisses ass to keep their jobs.

But with Babs? What can the producers or execs like Bill Geddy say? She is Barbara Walters, it's HER book, HER life, HER publicity, she can say whatever the F she wants! LOL

Now she's leaving on a book tour. Of course it's all about making money...*rolls eyes*...we ALL live in a world where whoring yourself takes many forms besides the obvious sexual definition. We say things we may not beleive to get people to invest in us both personally and professionally. In this case? That's showbiz!!!

Barbara is in her twilight years, very successful, and deserves celebration for an amazing career. All of America (and Toronto! shout out!!) will come out in droves to pay her the respect that she clearly deserves.

What's Star going to be doing during the book tour? Trying desperately to milk all of the free publicity she can get from Barbara's publicity machine. She's single now, so she's out in the streets in her hooker boots looking for work til she can snag a rich husband who isn't gay!!! Wink

They are both hoes, but Babs is my girl anyday. I'll be watching her with Charlie Gibson on the ABC news special tonight. Celebrate the moments of your life! Good and Bad!

GO TEAM BARBARA GO!!!

How condescending. I realize that but this is OPRAH. The rules don't always apply. And considering that this was a major port to publicize her memoir I doubt that that was done considering the times she was caught off guard during that interview.

And who, by chance did she trash in her book? Star Jones? Not! Ed Brooke? Not.

Rosie? NOT

She told her truth from her point of view. She named ONE name. It's not like she had a long rap sheet of affairs under her belt.

If she veiled it EVERYONE would know it was immediately. It was 30 years ago he was the ONLY, the FIRST black senator at the time. It would have been stupid to do so.

Why, because her show was cancelled and she got divorced??? Then I supposed everyone in Hollywood is a train wreck. Star isn't crashing her car into posh nightclubs or showing her twat, or driving around with children unbuckled in the back seat, shaving her head or what not. Train wrecks have heroine addictions or have to have their fathers take control of their assets. Star is no train wreck.

I'm pretty sure the book would have been a best seller without that part of her life in it but someone else would have put it down on paper anyway. It was beginning to leak back then as well.

Once again I say to you it's a part of Barbara's life. She has every right to discuss in HER OWN book the ups and downs. The good and the bad. She had an affair with the man. If his grandchildren ask if the old man in front of them cheated on their grandmother with the blaze trailing famous old woman on TV then maybe he should have thought about conducting HIMSELF a little better. When you're in the public eye you know longer have privacy.

She sure as hell is a trainwreck, just not by your definition. Ever since her weight loss began, with each passing day, and each pound lost, she started losing her dignity and self respect. She became vain and shallow and as her body got smaller, her head only got bigger. The wedding was the cream on top to confirm what we all knew.

Whether there is a needle in her arm or not, she's an absolute mess. She's pathetic, and has gone from the B list to the C list in my opinion.

At least Kathy Griffen is straight up about her status( I LOVE HER Smile) while she sits on the D list. Star would like to think she's up on the A list with Babs, but she's not. She's delusional and shameless, and that my friend makes her a train wreck in my books.

Look at the conversation this post is generating! WOW!

LOL I love Brooke. Don't get me wrong I was just making a point that Babs is a real person who screws up from time to time unlike soap characters who's job is to be continually messed up.

As for working in television regularly I think Babs will be able to say it 55 times in a row before Star gets another good gig.

Barbara doesn't need R's LOL She's got talent.

(Star does too. Remember I do indeed love Star. I watched Jones and Jury and her Court TV show as well and I was sad it ended because I knew it was her last chance at a good gig in TV. There's always the law.)

We are on the same page then, because I have adored Babs for YEARS and will never discount what she did for journalism and for working women (I was raised by strong women). I didn't miss The View for like the first three seasons, and I lived for 20/20 and her primetime specials, but from the monent she canned my girl Debbie and brought on that boring Ling I started questioning her logic. She felt Ling was a better representation of the younger generation, not for me! Debbie was much more like my friends and I in our late teens, early twenties, vapid, shallow and the life of the party! You don't obtain depth till at least 25. Ling and Elisabeth are TOO serious and frumpy to rep for the younger demo. Hell, Joy is hipper! But the Star thing is what really tore Babs britches with me. Then she brought that monstrosity Rosie on and she terrorized the airwaves. I wanted Donald Trump elected president for checking that hateful Rosie's ass! LOL

Kathy Griffen is brutally honest, pushes buttons and she can get ugly I agree. She is a truth teller. The truth can be really ugly, and that is what had everyone glued to Rosie and Elizabeth.

It's ugly, and it also makes for event television that I wont turn away from b/c i might feel offended or disagree. It's the only way I still sit through Elizabeth Hasslebeck 5 days a week!! LOL The fact that she's the voice for conservatives on the panel? They must roll their eyes at her. Now SHE is ugly. And naive. Nothing age wont fix Elizabeth! (I hope...lol)

LOL, Jay, thank you!

My 5 cents, if I may:

As a loyal (if often appalled...LOL) watcher of The View, my recollection of just about everything that was going on at the time of Star's announcement of her exit was fairly public knowledge and reported (in the gossip columns) regularly.

Prior to Star's announcement, the bad air was so thick on the televised show you could cut it with a knife. Joy, Barbara, and Elisabeth were noticeably uncomfortable and Star would continually brighten up for any time she had face time with the camera and then immediately looked like she'd rather be getting a colonoscipy than on that stage. Also, it wasn't Barbara who first called Star "Bridezilla" but rather the gossip rags (Page Six) and those on the blogosphere. And finally, there was a lot of public speculation about Star not being forthcoming about how she lost all her weight so quickly long before anyone -- including Star -- said a word about it.

When comparing all of the stories that erupted during and since that time, Star & Barbara actually recount much the same facts. But I say they are both full of doo doo because, like the skilled wordsmiths they are as a lawyer and journalist respectively, they are twisting the facts to make themselves look good. Here is what's pretty clear to me, although I could be wrong:

• ABC Daytime should have never allowed Star to publicize her wedding to Big Gay Al and turn it into a Nuptial-Thon. Barbara (who now says she and Bill Gedde were wrong) should have not allowed it. And Star, even with the blessing of the network, should never have taken it as far as she did.

• Both Star and Babara lied about the full circumstances of Star's weight loss. While Star absolutely had every right to her privacy about a medical procedure that was personal, if that was how she really felt then she should have not said anything at all instead of claiming that her weight loss was only due to pilates and excercise (only later admitting there was a "medical intervention"). The fact that Barbara went along with Star's lie is JUST as bad because it dragged the other co-hosts into that toxic mix and disseminated inaccurate information to the audience at large. We are a weight and diet obssessed country and it is the responsibility of people in the public sphere to give out accurate information because people's health is at stake. Or else shut the hell up and say "No comment."

• It was no business of Rosie to call Star out because it was none of Rosie's business at all. Having said that, we all know Rosie ain't right in the head and she's said so herself (I lost track of the medications she herself said she was taking). The number of feuds she's started out of righteous indignation should not and shouldn't have surprised anybody.

Perhaps this is the most salient issue of all. When tracking the timeline and everything everybody has said, there is one villian of the piece that hardly anyone ever mentions in the Star/Barbara/Rosie debacle:

Brian Frons.

Folk always point to The View being Barbara's show, but The View is a co-owned venture between Barbara's production company and ABC. The View falls under the umbrella of ABC Daytime. Because of this, Frons actually makes the final decisions about the show and its hosts. As we know, ABC is always (allegedly) doing tons of audience testing and this usually increases prior to the completion of contracts. This way the network knows if they want to renew, renegotiate, or cut. I think this part is mostly true in Barbara's part of the story: the network did their testing and found -- among The View's core audience -- Star just wasn't likable or recognizable anymore. She wasn't the fat sassy Black woman with whom they had grown comfortable. (and yes, that statement is loaded with connotation). So ABC, meaning Frons, knew they were not going to renew Star's contract and started reaching out to Rosie....before officially breaking the news to Star.

But guess what folks. Those rumors about Rosie coming on to the show were already out in public and Star had to have known the handwriting was on the wall. No one bought the fact that Rosie was just coming on to replace Meredith. Then the daytime Emmy's came along and the announcement was made about Rosie and Star still had not been informed that she was out. So. Star. Got. Pissed. Off.

Adding insult to injury was Frons asking Babs to tell Star the news about the non-renewal of Star's contract after that fact. Perhaps because Star & Barbara were once close they thought it would go over better. That I cannot speak to. But by that point the damage had been done. And. Star. Wasn't. Having. It.

When Barbara/Bill Gedde/ABC-Frons offered to let Star tell any story she wanted to leave, that is extremely common in all kinds situations. The embezzling CEO resigns so he can "spend more time with his family." The disgraced politician leaves office so he can "work on projects close to his heart." The untalented actress is replaced because the writers want to "take the character in a different direction." In this light, I don't know why folks make a big deal out of Barbara/ABC telling Star she could use any story she wanted -- if any --to save face. I more or less take them at their word on this...but...

A lot of folks think that Star "took control" of the situation when she finally dropped the bombshell she was leaving. But she really did not. She apparently did agree to go along with the program...until she decided she didn't want to anymore. And in so doing, she didn't let anyone know what she was planning until it happened live on air. So, I can see how Barbara felt blindsided after trying to shield Star (Babs sure didn't do so with Debbie Mentholtropolist, did she?) and I can see how Star felt aggrieved by having all of this stuff done behind her back...in front of her face. What makes this all sad and silly and boring is that these two accomplished women in their respective fields are acting out one of the most cliche dramas that that have been ascribed to women since time immemorial.

But in the end, Star's contract was not picked up (Barbara's language) and Star was fired (Star's language). Six of one and a half dozen of the other. But who was responsible?

Brian Frons.

Star was told April 21st. Emmy's were April 28th 2006.
