Media Spat Erupts Between Star Jones and Barbara Walters

A media spat has erupted between former The View co-hosts Barbara Walters and Star Jones over Barbara Walters' recent appearance on the Oprah Show to promote her new memoir Audition. On the Oprah Show Walters talked in detail about the two tumultuous years on The View involving Star Jones leaving and Rosie O'Donnell's stint on the show.

Revealing that Star Jones was once the show's most popular host, Walters told Oprah that after Jones drastic weight loss (and gastric bypass  cover up) and turning into "bridezilla" during her wedding plans/promotion that audiences no longer felt they could relate to her and that ABC would not renew her contract. Enter Rosie O'Donnell's roller coaster year on The View.

Responding to Barbara's interview with Oprah Star told Us Magazine “It is a sad day when an icon like Barbara Walters, in the sunset of her life, is reduced to publicly branding herself as an adulterer, humiliating an innocent family with accounts of her illicit affair and speaking negatively against me all for the sake of selling a book. It speaks to her true character.” Perez Hilton is reporting that in Barbara Walters reps have released a statement saying  "I will not dignify this with a comment. Barbara's written words say it all!"

What do you think?

Barbara shouldn't be telling show secrets.

Barbara ought to be ASHAMED of herself. She broke the "Ho Code", if you sleep with someone you don't have any business sleeping with you keep it to yourself! And I am so sick and tired of this once someone loses weight the audience can't "relate to them" mess. They said that same crap about Oprah. So what, they should stay fat and relatable and fall dead from diabetes???

Star embarked on a private medical procedure that she didn't feel like talking about early on and people like Rosie O' Hypocrite (she who admonished Tom Selleck about guns when he came on to talk koosh balls, yet had armed guards to protect her family) criticized her for not coming clean about her weight loss (jealous much?) and when Babs saw the opportunity to have Rosie come on, she threw Star to the wolves because Rosie couldn't play nice and share. Plain and simple. Rosie is a control freak who would rather go up against a lightweight like Elisabeth. Politically I line up with most of Rosie's beliefs, but she had me feeling sorry for Elisabeth because of Rosie's penchant for steam rolling everyone with her views. I was SO proud when Elisabeth gave her the what for in that notorious debate.  Star intimidated Rosie so she wanted her off and Babs went along and it came back to bite her royally. If ABC didn't want her to promote her doggone wedding, why did they let her???? So now they have Sherri, a watered down version of Star, minus the intellect, Snort. Barbara used to be one of my idols, but more and more she is proving to be just like everyone else in Hollyweird, out for NUMERO UNO!

The only thing Jay that I thought Star did irresponsibly was tell viewers she achieved her weight loss with pilates and portion control.  I understand that her medical procedure was her own business however, she lost a drastic amount of weight and on national television.

Other than that... BW is trying to sell books, simple as that.

Star said that she didn't want to tell because of how people tend to base their decision on their own lives on what celebs do and since gastric bypass is a very serious medical procedure, she didn't want people running out and getting it going "Star did it" and then have complications. She eventually said she had "medical intervention" but people like Rosie wouldn't leave it at that. Rosie attacked her publicly about her weight loss, as if it was any of Rosie's business! She loves to dish it, but can't take it, as proved when The Donald told her how the cow ate the cabbage! LOL Everyone called Trump a bully, but they forget Rosie started it, but HE finished it. Not to mention that mess she pulled with sweet Kelly Ripa, calling her a homophobe for not wanting Clay Aiken to cover her mouth. Clay Aiken has never said he was gay, so how was Kelly a homophobe? A germaphobe maybe, but not a homophobe. I loved Rosie back on her talk show right up until she pulled that stunt with Tom Selleck. Then she went from bad to worse.

Good for Star!! I'm on her side on this one!

Babs has a right to say what she wants regarding her love affair and making comments about Star, BUT if she's going to do that, she better expect for some mud to fly right back in her face. Star is absolutely right about this. Babs is choosing to promote her book by discussing salacious aspects of her life and my bashing Star, and that's pretty crass and very much beneath a person of her stature.

Regarding Star and her weight loss, it was no one's business how she lost the weight, and she made it clear that one of the reasons she chose not to discuss it was because she didn't want to essentially become a "spokesperson" for any particular procedure. There was no need for some people to attack her so savagely when she wouldn't reveal her weight loss method. First she's punished for being overweight, then she's punished for losing the weight.

I have to speak up for Barbara then. I used to be one of those people who stood up for star but I have to say that Star needs to shut the hell up.

Barbara Walters is telling the story of HER life, what SHE experienced and her feelings during that time. Star Jones had every and took any opportunity to spin the facts in her favor and Barbara sat back and only defended herself.

The lack of character is on Star Jones, who admitted on her own CANCELLED talk show that she did force everyone to lie because she could cop with her not being able to control her own weight. All Barbara did was tell her side of the story. If the bitch was a bit more honest instead of crowing about the advantages of Pilates and portion control and just said I need gastric bypass to save my life she would get some respect from me. Is she still referring to it as a "medical intervention."

I don't like the fact that Barbara is getting attacked because she wanted to protect that beasts feelings. I don't care what anyone has to say but Star Jones needs to sit her cottage cheese ass down and stop WHORING herself for publicity, and actually pay for something instead of trying to get every damn thing free.

I do believe Barbara wished her dumb ass well too. Ungrateful cow!

Shock Barbara asked Star to LIE about why she was leaving the show. A JOURNALIST asking someone to lie, make that a JOURNALISM LEGEND. She wanted Star to go quietly into the night and good for Star that she didn't! And now Barbara is talking crap about Star two years later! Star didn't bring their situation back up, Barbara did, in order to hawk her tawdry little tell all. She went from journalism pioneer to Kitty Kelly in one swoop!

Star was a successful lawyer and commentator before Barbara hired her for The View. She didn't need Barbara to succeed and again...Star didn't bring all this back up, Barbara did.

Star asked everyone to lie her Gastric Bypass. In fact, the gave Star a chance to go with some class and she chose to leave with like a fool. Where is that helping Star's career. She'll be only TruTV's go to lawyer for 6 seconds and that's it.

As for Barbara, she's always going to be legendary but it's her life to tell as she wants. Now she's telling the absolute truth and it's a problem. I'm sure there is more that that tawdry if anyone cared to read it. These are the stories that get press. If Star Jones has a problem she could always join forces with Rosie O'Donell. Or she could sit down and be grateful that she still has a tiny shot at a career in show business.

Much like Barbara's being a serious journalist has taken a backseat to her spending her twilight years poorly wrangling a three-ring media circus of revolving co-hosts.

Why on Earth should Star feel grateful to Babs for her career? This is an educated woman who was already working in journalism before Babs called. She didnt do Star any favors. It's not like she was eating crickets on Survivor like Elisabeth.

Come on, Star's career in Televison was about OVER when BW came in and reenergized her career. Yes she's educated, yes she's even a good personality to watch when she's not talking about people with righteous indignation but she needed the view like a crack head needed a hit and she got the chance to do what I believe she loves, being a public figure. Her wedding to AL surely proves that.

Barbara Walters is not in the business of doing anyone favors. Ask Debbie Matenopolous, she brought Star on because she knew could successful "play" the diva part, which Star did to a hilt. And again, if ABC had such a problem with her "self promoting" during her wedding, why didn't they put a stop to it? They gave her the rope that they used to hang her with. Star would still be sitting around that table with all those women talking over each other if Rosie hadn't said she couldn't work with Star. Rosie was scared of a strong, educated woman who wouldn't take her mess so she forced ABC to get rid of her and Barbara had the audacity and shame to ask Star to lie about it all. How in the world is that allowing her to go with dignity? What part of lying and dignity go together? And why are so many people always in an uproar when someone promotes themself??? It never hurt Oprah, Bill Gates, Donald Trump or Tyler Perry. Why shouldn't Star promote herself?

And I am SO glad this time Star didn't take the high road. Other times she said things like Barbara was mentor and she would just leave it at that, but this time she had enough of her mess and called her out for being a tacky old lady airing her dirty laundry!

Uh, why ain't both Star and Barbara in the outhouse? Why is it one or the other?

Both of them need to buy a pallet of Fleet and Charmin from Costco as far as I can tell.

If you're going to say that Star is wh♥ring herself for publicity you'd have to say the same about Barbara Walters. Yes, they BOTH have the right to talk about whatever they want to, but why do you think Babs is talking about Star Jones?? Do you think the Star vs. Barbara drama was a pivotal moment in her career? Do you think it was an important, life changing event for her? Of course not!! It's gossip that everyone wants to hear, so Barbara is taking advantage of that to publicize her book. Therefore, like I posted earlier, she can say what she wants, but she better be ready to take some flack for it. And frankly, do you think Babs is minding any of this?? She's getting more free publicity for her book, so I'm sure she's loving. Yet again, she threw Star under the bus to make herself look better.

And it was no one's business how Star lost her weight. Why did people care so much? Why was it necessary for people to be so focused on her weight to begin with? Can you imagine how difficult it would have been to have to listen to people make comments like the ones posted on here? So what if she was hoping people would think she lost weight the old fashioned way? There's a stigma attached to people who have weight loss surgery (like, they did it the "easy way," or they "cheated") and maybe Star didn't want to deal with that. Maybe she just wanted to feel good about herself, without becoming a spokesperson for a certain procedure. I don't think she should have been verbally maligned for it.

Star is an incredibly intelligent beautiful woman, who's going through a difficult time in her life right now (too bad Barbara Walters couldn't be sensitive to that). I know that she will continue to be successful no matter what path she chooses.

Oh Jay, do you have your facts confused or what?

Rosie was contacted to headline the view AFTER it was mandated by suits at ABC to get rid of Jones. At that time it would have been 3 people at the table with Jones fired. If anyone had a problem it was Star at Rosie. If you remember Rosie made some comments about Star at the time because of the surgery and she also called Al Reynolds gay.

Let's get that part straight (no pun intended)

Barbara shouldn't have lied. I agree. She should have shown star the door on Thanksgiving when they decided not to renew her contract. Focus groups got Star fired but BW should have been honest about the firing.

But... Star didn't just promote herself she made herself a pitchwoman on ABC's dime. Not cool when they are paying your salary. Oprah, Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Tyler Perry have the good sense to promote themselves in their OWN vehicles. Star should promote herself but on her own time. Not during her work hours. It's about respect.

I also think it's interesting that in her interview with Oprah that Barbara admitted that her interviewing wasn't as good as it used to be because now, and I'm paraphrasing, she feels bad asking people hard questions. That TOALLY goes with what were were talking about in another post about how her interviews aren't what they used to be.

As for Barbara vs. Star I think that Babs telling about what happened on The View is fair game since it is a TV show afterall just as Star has every right to respond to Babs comments about her and defend herself. There are always going to be two sides to a story and they each have plenty of entertainment coverage to beable to tell theirs.

Personally, my issue with this whole thing is Barbara using her affair with a black Senator as the big tease to get people to read. The man lost the election because of his divorce from the woman he was married 2 at the time of his affair with her and now years later this man is now happily married and has a family. How many times can Barbara cause problems for him? IMO Barbara should have NEVER brought this up. Can you imagine what his family and children are going through? There are just some things that shouldn't be made public by someone, even if it is to sell a memoir.

It was announced at the Emmys that Rosie was going to The View. She was asked IMMEDIATELY by the press about the remarks she had made about Star and her weight and Rosie said she looked forward to working with Star and that there was room for everyone. All the while she was telling ABC she wouldn't work with Star. Of course Rosie will never admit that, but even Stevie Wonder could see that's what was going on.

The fact that Star was OUT was not made known until way after the EMMY's if you recall everyone was denying it at the time.

Exactly my point! LMAO ABC wanted Star to lie and say SHE wanted to leave, not so they could allow her a "graceful exit", but so they could soften any potential backlash. And I am sure the negotiations with Rosie had been going on for weeks, if not months prior to Star's ousting. It wasn't a coincidence. No one can deny Rosie was a ratings draw for that show, but what Barbara Walters lost in integrity can never be regained or replaced by high demos.

And another thing, who the hell was ROSIE who gushed about her crush on Tom Cruise for half a decade to call Al "Big Gay Al"???? She stayed in the closet so long enough to make 100 million dollars off of Middle America, then she decided she had a right to be the voice of gay people everywhere. Give me Ellen ANY DAY.

Star being on The View was a mutually beneficial arrangement for both Star and Babs. Star, imo, was a key factor in The Views initial success.

Babs chose Star to be on the show because of what Star could bring to the table, Star wasn't a charity case. It's not like Babs was pulling a Henry Higgins and pulled Star out of the gutter.

Hmmm, if Star is such a "small portion of the book" why is Babs on Oprah talking about her??? Why not her interview with some dignitary or something? No, she is pimping the three stories that will sell the book, her nasty, scandalous affair, and her battles with Star and Rosie.
