DC #356: Days of Our Lives Emergency Episode

Days of Our Lives fired Thaao Penghlis, Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans and the unexpected news brought Luke, Mike, Jamey and Jillian together for a second Days of Our Lives emergency episode in the past six months.

They discuss the impact the firings of these veteran actors will have on the show. They talk about what this means for the remaining actors over forty still on the show and speculate who Ken Corday might axe next. They answer a reader's question of which is worse, to watch vets like Nichols and Evans get fired and keep the Days of Our Lives sets or have the show end up with a production model like Guiding Light. Luke asks if these latest firings could all be apart of Corday's scheme to get Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn back later in the year. Mike, Jamey and Jillian weigh in on if they think it is a realist possibility.

Fans of Patch and Kayla call in with their reaction to the surprising firings and vent their frustrations at the decisions by NBC, Corday, Dena Higley and the other executives at the show.

Would You Like Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans to Return As Stefan Cassadine and Katherine Bell?

With the not so shocking news that Days of Our Lives has fired Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans I have to ask, would you like Nichols and/or Evans to return to General Hospital as Stefan Cassadine and Katherine Bell?

The week of August 18, 1998 was the week I started watching General Hospital. It was that week that Katherine Bell appeared alive at Stefan Cassadine's trial and it is that storyline that hooked me on the show. It was also my first introduction to Nicholas and Evans. I would absolutely love it if one or both of them returned to General Hospital. Unfortunately, all the You Tube clips of the trial I could find have their embedding disabled so the above clip is from Stefan's 2003 death.

Would you like Nichols and Evans to return to General Hospital?

BREAKING NEWS: Corday FIRES Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans!

Soap Opera Digest is reporting that Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans have been FIRED from Days of Our Backstage Disaster. Wow, just wow, Ed Scott's gone, Drake and Dee are gone, Thaao's gone, now Steve and Mary Beth but... the Fi-Core folks are still employed to dismantle another day. Honestly how do Ken Corday, Gary Tomlin and Dena Higley sleep at night? Wait, on second thought, I know the answer to that, duh! It's likely akin to how the CEO's of the big U.S. automaker do, like rich, pillaging babies. Thanks mcasey11138 and thegreatescape for the tip!

Steve Johnson Listed in Mag's "Eye Patch" History

In the latest edition of New York magazine, Days of Our Lives character Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) is among those in the glossy's "Great Moments in Eye Patches." The list focuses on some of pop culture's iconic figures that sport the accessory and the impact of it. For Patch's return to Salem, the magazine states,

The eye patch is the least ridiculous thing about him. We say “is” because he returned from the grave and was reunited with Kayla in 2006.

Ouch! DAYS has finally gotten some press in mainstream media outside of the firing of the iconic duo of Drake Hogestyn (John) and Deidre Hall (Marlena), but Ken Corday and co still can't get any love. Guess it's true about the nasty little vixen known as Karma.

See what the magazine has to say about other characters sporting a patch: READ MORE

DC Exclusive: "John Black" Co-Creator Reacts to Days' Shocking Firings of Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn!

Thom Racina, the man who wrote the ratings juggernaut wedding of a couple of soap opera characters named Luke and Laura (Tony Geary and Genie Francis) on General Hospital, before moving on to Days of Our Lives, where he and fellow co-head writers Sheri Anderson and Leah Laiman continued the supercouple craze, penning lush, romantic storylines for Patch and Kayla (Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans), Bo and Hope (Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso), Shane and Kim (Charles Shaughnessy and Patsy Pease) and John and Marlena (Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall), speaks exclusively to Daytime Confidential.com about the shocking ouster of Hogestyn and Hall.

Read why Racina believes Ken Corday's move to fire Days of Our Lives' most popular couple, reportedly to trim costs, was the "wrong way to fix what's wrong" with the NBC sudser. Find out what Racina feels Days can learn from his most recent employer, The Young and the Restless, in terms of rebuilding itself by focusing on core characters, as opposed to focusing on younger viewers. When you're done, go back and listen to our podcast interview with The Father of the Modern Soap Opera Supercouple (DC# 191). It's a true can't miss Thanksgiving treat for a soap fan. READ MORE
