The soap world is still reeling from the May 8 passing of actress Jeanne Cooper. Fans of the beloved grand dame have been wondering what will happen to her iconic character, Katherine "Kay" Chancellor on The Young and the Restless. TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan spoke with Y&R’s executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who gave the inside scoop on how the soap will deal with both the passings of Cooper and Kay.
TV Guide Magazine: Tell us about the plans to honor her on air, and what you plan to do about her character.
Phelps: We're going to have the actors closest to Jeanne — probably 25 in all — sit in the Chancellor mansion set and tell stories and reminisce about her life, as themselves. We'll serve tea and let everyone talk and cry and laughs and share and we'll find the best photos and clips we can get our hands on and edit it all together into a beautiful celebration episode. This is all for Jeanne. And then later we will deal with the death of Kay Chancellor. We've already written the show into July, so it will take some time before we can address her departure on air. In the meantime, there will be references in the script that Katherine and her husband Murphy are off somewhere on a trip. READ MORE

The Young and the Restless Co-Creator Lee Phillip Bell on Jeanne Cooper: "Her Love Was Unexpendable"By Jamey Giddens on May 10, 2013
Soap dynasty matriarch Lee Phillip Bell has spoken out on the passing of her friend and colleague, the late Jeanne Cooper. Bell's husband, the late William J. Bell hired Cooper to play wealthy, drunken socialite Katherine Chancellor six months into The Young and the Restless' run on CBS, back in 1973.
"Jeanne Cooper: respected colleague, industry icon, woman of passion and grandeur; most important, beloved friend," said Bell. "She was a shining beacon. Her love was unexpendable, and was given freely to all, from fans to great celebrities. She was not jaded by success, nor impressed by wealth and fame. Her crowning glory was her family: her children Corbin, Collin and Caren and her grandchildren, whom she adored, and all of whom adored her in return. Her presence resonated in the lives of all those around her. Through her personal and professional journey, she saved hundreds, possibly thousands, from the depths of alcoholism. She embodied compassion and forgiveness. No daytime icon has ever been more influential in the lives of millions. She will be terribly missed, but her light will shine on forever. May angels guide you on your journey, dear Jeanne. I will love you forever."
CBS Daytime will air a special episode of The Young and the Restless on May 28, in memory of the late Jeanne Cooper (Kay). Cooper's cast members, friends and family will all be featured in the telecast.
“Jeanne Cooper was a legend and we want to give her the tribute she deserves,” said Angelica McDaniel, senior vice-president of CBS Daytime. “The cast will honor their longtime friend, family member and co-worker in the greatest way possible, as we celebrate her life and vibrant spirit and share it with the audience who loved her as much as we did.” READ MORE
