No. 10: Erika Slezak, One Life to Live
She only had a few precious weeks to entertain us in 2012, as One Life to Live ended its network television run early last January. Erika Slezak definitely made the most of her time. As Viki Lord dealt with the return of one of her deadliest foes, Alison Perkins (Barbara Garrick), and admitted that she still loved ex-husband Clint Buchanan (Jerry verDorn), Slezak displayed the same above reproach acting chops that made her a Daytime Emmy darling.
The woman who gave us Niki Smith also proved she could still be quite hilarious, portraying a highly-reactionary foreign maid during the Fraternity Row soap-within-a-soap arc. With OLTL possibly returning, we just might be putting Slezak on our "Best" lists for years to come.
Daytime Confidential's been saying it, TV Guide Magazine's Michael Logan has said it. Now The New York Post is chiming in. The newspaper has named General Hospital as one of the Top 5 Shows to watch in 2013. According to the paper:
General Hospital” (Weekdays, 2 p.m., ABC) There isn’t a lot to be celebrating in the soap world, with the demise of so many stalwarts in the past five years. But those that remain — “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” Days of Our Lives” and “General Hospital” — are all making concerted efforts to keep the remaining viewers tuning in.
The leader among them was “GH,” which pulled out every star from its swashbuckling 1980s lineup. They were right to do so: We saw the return of Finola Hughes’ former super-spy Anna Devane, proving that women over 40 are still leading lady material and re-affirming that the ridiculous plots that made soaps fun in the ’80s can still make daytime drama worthwhile. Ten years after her first stint on General Hospital, Meredith Vieira is back. TV Guide Magazine's Michael Logan spoke with the former co-host of The View and The Today Show to get the skinny on what her character Bree Flanders will be up to when she hits Port Charles on Dec. 14.
TV Guide Magazine: You were such a hoot as Bree. What's become of our girl?
Vieira: Well, she's no longer providing comfort to men! Lynn Herring returns to the show as Lucy Coe [also Friday] and it turns out Bree is her senior vp of marketing at CoeCoe Cosmetics. Sabrina and Felix are desperately trying to get a meeting with Lucy but first they have to go through me. [Laughs] But, really, not much has changed for Bree. Prostitution. Makeup. Hey, it's all sales.
