For 32 of As The World Turns' 54 years Daytime Confidential's Special Guest Colleen Zenk dazzled audiences as the insurmountable Barbara Ryan. Today Zenk joins Luke, Jamey, Mike, J. Bernard and Melodie to reflect on the passing of television's most popular soap opera of all time. Bernard's "World" View: In Defense of Christopher Goutman

Several days ago, I posted an entry about the fallout from the death of Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens) on As The World Turns. There were three central ideas in that piece. First, despite the very legitimate complaints that any given fan might have, ATWT is providing great human drama here at the end of its run. Second, Reid’s tragic passing and donation of his heart to Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) encapsulated that goal mainly by thrusting the Hughes’— the show’s core family since its very debut— front and center toward its conclusion. Third, given the soap opera wrapped production months ago, the idea of kicking a dead horse with unrelenting criticism isn’t going to make it win the Kentucky Derby.

I have not budged one iota from any of those positions and I am about to incur the wrath of a whole lot more of you by making what I know will be a very controversial statement to many: I believe that in these final days, executive producer Christopher Goutman has made mostly the right decisions.

Colleen Zenk Reveals How Having Said "Screw You" to Death Helps Her Say Goodbye to ATWT

The ageless and fabulous Colleen Zenk recently spoke with Michael Logan for TV Guide about the end of As The World Turns this coming Friday. In yet another moving chat featuring the woman who breathed life into Barbara Ryan for the better part of 30 years, Zenk revealed how having kicked cancer in the nads helps her cope with whatever life throws at her— including a real-life divorce and soap cancellations.

TV Guide Magazine: You've been through so much since the cancer diagnosis in 2007. How did it affect your work?

Zenk: I feel extraordinarily freed up as an actor, and that has everything to do with what I've gone through. I would not be able to tackle the recent material with as much abandon as I did had life not dished me all this crap these last few years. It's a kind of fearlessness, but it certainly wasn't conscious. It wasn't until this past spring that I realized I was no longer working in such an uptight way. I said to [exec producer] Chris Goutman, "If I get too big, just rein me in." But he never did. A few years ago, I would not have been able to portray Barbara as an older woman with the kind of confidence I did in this go-round. A great deal of that is having survived cancer twice. There's nothing like staring death in the face and saying, "Screw you!" READ MORE
