Is ABC trying to push Barbara Walters out the door, like NBC is allegedly attempting to do with Jay Leno? According to Showbiz 411, Walters had only discussed retiring from ABC News, but not from The View. The site reports Walters was "ambushed" by the retirement reports.
Barbara Walters was totally ambushed by ABC today, my sources say. And the reality is, if she were even contemplating retirement of some kind, either Liz Smith or Cindy Adams would have reported it first. Now every media outlet has picked up this crazy story, and it’s quickly becoming “fact.” Stay turned to see if Walters rebuts. Interesting timing too since “The View” is not live tomorrow, but taped for Good Friday. ABC really played it well.
However, Showbiz 411 also reported:
Any ABC insider “knowledgeable the situation” insists that Walters was not ambushed, and that this is exactly what she wanted."
Is journalist extraordinaire Barbara Walters ready to sign off from television news for good? Per Deadline, after a 52-year career in broadcast journalism, Walters is gearing up to announce her retirement in May. According to the site, ABC is set to give B.W. a spectacular goodbye, which will include highlights from career.
It can’t be fun being Elisabeth Hasselbeck these days. First came the reports she was being fired from The View. Then Barbara Walters denied Hasselbeck was leaving. Now the New York Post is reporting that Hasselbeck is in fact on her way out.
“Dumping Joy Behar, who was there 16 years, and Hasselbeck would be the fastest way to do it, they decided. After giving Behar the bad news last week and letting her bow out gracefully, someone leaked the Hasselbeck thing. Some enemies she has on the show saw their chance to get back at her. Barbara was spitting mad that it got mishandled, and called off the firing over [last] weekend.”
While we heard Hasselbeck would go when her contract is up next year, the source added, “It could be earlier, because the ABC brass believes the show needs to be younged-up fast. They easily could coax her to go early.” READ MORE
Oh this could be delicious. According to New York Daily News, Joy Behar is working on a no holds barred standup comedy act about her years on The View and isn’t afraid to spill the proverbial tea.
“Joy knows everything, she’s lasted this whole time,” says our source. “She knows why Debbie Matenopoulos was fired, the truth about Star Jones’ marriage, and the time Star [supposedly] tackled her to the ground when Joy tried to take a photograph of her on her wedding day.” (Star magazine had bought exclusive rights to the event.)
“She knows which host had trouble borrowing clothes for the show because they often returned them soiled,” says the source. “And then there is the whole Rosie O’Donnell drama, not to mention working with Barbara.” READ MORE
The bumpy start of Oprah’s cable network OWN hasn’t impacted the former daytime talk show host’s influence. Oprah earned the top spot on Forbes’ Most Influential Celebrities list. The Mighty O wasn't the only daytime celebrity to make the list. Oprah protégé Dr. Oz and The View’s Barbara Walters landed on spots No. 6 and No. 7 respectively. Is she staying or is she going? On today's episode of The View, series creator and executive producer Barbara Walters denied Elisabeth Hasselbeck is on her way out. Said Babs:
"There is a particularly false story that keeps getting picked up about Elisabeth's alleged departure, saying that we don't approve of her conservative views. The truth is we love Elisabeth. I like her personally and she's just a wonderful person. But beyond that, we value and appreciate her point of view because Elisabeth helps give the show perspective and balance. ... So we have no plans for Elisabeth to leave the show."
