There she is... Victoria Mallory.
Great cover...I wish you could get to the article (if there was one). Love the pic of all of them. Brenda looks great too!
YES, the article (I assume) at the top page about all soaps making huge profits for their network...hell paying for their prime-time shows.
I loved Victoria in Lucus\Leslie\Lance\Lori quad...she was great in it her first big "Leslie" story with the part. Best quad I have ever enjoy most was this one from Bill & Kay. I loved Janice Lynde's "Leslie" better with all the animosity between Leslie\Lori period. Their chemistry was great together, each played the part perfectly....Leslie the fragile, good-hearted sister, Lori always being jealous of Leslie, thinking it was always about Leslie's talent growing up, Lori would cut you and wouldn't see it coming
This is about the time that I remember watching all the time when I got home from school. In N Wisconsin they were still airing it in the late afternoon. It was the only CBS soap not in its time slot. I think they aired "Love of Life" before it although it wasn't doing well by that time.
ATWT, SFT and GL were my grandmother's big three. She didn't want me watching Y and R because she thought it was too racy! I loved the "In My Sister's Shadow" story.
I did like both Janice, and the original Chris too.
Pferrando...that picture of "Jill" Brenda Dickson was so beautiful in the '70s style of Jill she played. Not pounds of makeup ('80s was heavy for all soaps), strawberry blonde Jill short cut, young, inexperience Jill ...I guess I do love Brenda Dickson's "Jill" after all more than I realized because I did so love her in the "70s!! Behind my Lori!
Me too! Was always partial to "Lauralee". I always found it interesting that Bill named her after his daughter...especially with some of the things she did in her early years.
As a great defender of Victoria Mallory, I have to tell you that her acting was top notch, and really captured who Leslie Brooks was. The fragile violinist, who was so accepted by Vanessa Prentiss, vs Laurie Brooks, who, in my opinion, came across as evil. There is no question in anyone's mind in 'the day' that Tom Ligon's Lucas belonged with Vickie Mallory's Leslie.
I never saw Y&R before 1979, so I never saw Janice Lynde. I remember watching it with my Mom, who would tape it on her VHS player (cost was $600 at that time!), and we would watch it after I got home from football practice.
The good old days. My Mom spent $600 on a VHS player to tape Daytime shows, when were we growing up in Mexicantown in Detroit.
Anyway, a friendly hug to you, Harlee.
Hey Mon...absolutely...both "Leslies" were top notch actors and played the parts and what is more amazing how Bill found 2 actors to had been accomplished pianists was extraordinary.
Vanessa love Leslie to death...but Lori Vanessa just wanted to cause her death!
Bill did a great job of recasting all of them back in the day:
Chris, Snapper, Leslie...
Greg was my only issue.
We need another Vanessa character! So much fun to hate her back then.
Bill wasn't afraid to recast ANY ROLE..proof in his main muse..Jill Foster! Yes Greg's Wings was the one married to Nikki and hated it MTS & Wings had no chemistry...soon after Nikki & Greg was over, Greg was the first Foster child to leave canvas...Bill wrote out Greg. Early Greg the original had some good storylines, he was much hotter than Wm. Espy, but favorite Snapper was David Hasselhoff better actor for the role, he had chemistry with both Chris' and Sally. He was always good w\Brenda Dickson not the hysterical Brenda of late '80s...very real and good.
Speaking of Brenda Dickson her book came out on last Friday it on nook, amazon and barnes & noble. She out there promoting her tell-all.. One thing about Y&R the stuff behind the scenes always makes for good drama-
ooh who brought up Wm Gray Espy? I don't remember him as Snapper only the Hoff, however when he went over to AW and had his thing with Rachel, oh yeah he was all that in that role.
I only watched William Gray Espy on AW. I always thought his choices in acting were very interesting if unfulfilled. He always had this smoldering angst driven thing going on that was boiling up from his center core that never ever ever reached the surface. I wish he would have let it go occasionally. It would have been explosive and he would have been a major player in soaps. As was, his scenes often fell flat because he missed the dramatic possibilities by suppressing the pay off moments. All that angst and sulleness has to lead to something. It just never did. The show also did him no favors by pairing him with Linda Dano. She, the volcano of emotion, him the Vulcan. Rachel was always his end game. The problem was he was never hers. He was always second or third place for her (behind both Mac or Steve or both). Had he let go with an honest hair pulling, room crashing, brick through the window moment, occasionally, it might have gotten Rachel's attention. Otherwise the only thing he ever really did was that passive aggressive kidnapping of Matthew when he was a baby. We all know how mother's love for their baby daddy to kidnap the young pup!
William Gray Espy was THE MAN. That guy could make you think he was a serial killer one moment, and a kind-hearted fellow the next. Did not see much of him on Y&R, but he was great on Another World as Mitch, with Janice, trying to kill off poor ol Mac. The death of Janice, then the trial where Rachel had to admit that she slept with Mitch on the courtroom stand. Second to none.
Where is my Beverlee McKinsey?
Favorite villainesses in order:
Iris, Vanessa, Dina Megaron, Cecille DePugilianac (not sure if I'm am spelling it right), Donna Love (kooky, crazy Donna).
I can never figure out why LML never made Gloria "rich", then take over Genoa City as a campy, witchy villainess.
Hey mon...yes, Gloria was and continues to be wasted on Y and R.
The show needs someone like you mention above...evil-ish, but yet not totally pyscho.
I was liking Ricky in that role, before he too was permanently wasted. He really could have been used.
As I have said before, Ricky could have been a great villain. He could have married Abby, and taken over Jabot or Newman. But MAB's greatest tragedy, killing off Ricardo Williams.
Oo, for the subtle nuanced, evil restraint of Iris Cory. Second to none. Then she took it to 'Guiding Light'.
None of that over-the-top weirdness of Alexia Colby (Dahhhling), or the meandering mutterings of Dena Megaron (I do love her, but sometimes she wouldn't follow thru with the plan), or the just plain whacked-out hatred for Laurie Brooks like Vanessa Prentiss had (to the point of committing suicide, even though she was terminal).
Picture perfect Beverlee McKinsey. Too bad Iris became too nice on the second season of 'Texas'.
I didn't mind Iris being nice. I just loved Beverlee Mckinsey doing anything!
It is too bad she left Texas though. Had Pam Long started writing sooner, that show would have been explosive. It might have survived today even. But such are things.
@marknsprmo: Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uga0WXRIhiM&playnext=1&list=PL6A16963B92C...
Good Clips ! Mark how can you not love Beverlee she was AMAZING actor! So here go it's the 1st appearance of Beverlee in Feb '84. Pam Long & Gail Kobe had just arrived about 9 months prior...boy I loved this period.
The Baroness lurking around chatting to people and nobody knows her damn that set the character up perfectly!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-smzLWnQVoE Pt. 3
Lovin' all the love for Beverlee McKinsey. I never saw her on AW but she simply owned GL--Kim Zimmer who?--as Alexandra Spaulding. In my mind she's still the greatest actress to ever set foot on a daytime soap set. Letting her exit the show was one of two irreparable mistakes JFP made while she was in charge of GL(the other of course was killing Maureen Bauer off because a "focus group" told her to).
And regarding Ricky Williams, killing him off--and wasting the vast talents of Peter Porte--is definitely right up there as one of MAB's biggest mistakes; I would love to see the current regime find some way to get PP back on the show. Unlike some of the show's current studs, the man is hot AND he can act.
David and Harlee thanks for the clips! I really liked Lisby Larson and Jim Poyner together, but Iris sure didn't lol. Harlee I loved the mascarade ball. I remember that from back in the day! I thought it was really well done and a great way to introduce Beverlee as well as all the other stories they were doing at the time. It was funny that so many of the actors had been on NBC soaps. Harley Kozak and Michael Woods played brother and sister on Texas. Of course Kim Zimmer was the great Nola Dancy on the Doctors. Maeve Kinkade was on Another World as Angie Perinni. So I knew many of the actors even back then. Still later on several other actors went to NBC after GL.
I just have to say one thing though, what the hell was Nola wearing? Apparently very pregnant but did they have to put her in a polka dot tent?
In typical Nola fashion, she confused costume & Masquerade and wore a clown outfit...that's our Nola! I remember it, Quentin tried to explain to Nola but only in Nola's logic! I watched the Texas clip and so many came with Pam & Gale from Texas, Libby played Lillian's sister, Jessie's mom on GL. My question if Pam Long could do what she did with GL, following Doug Marland (GL was truly in a golden period) and continue & build on what Doug had done why couldn't she have done that with Texas? Or was it NBC being as always axe happy? Didn't you love Reva & Vanessa in ladies room? It continued and Billy & Vanessa got married for the first time, Alan was pissed and Alex revealed herself in Alex fashion. This is when Leslie got the dreaming death shortly after, Warren (which I loved) had to return the necklace, Jim was exposed as a Reardon, Nola went into labor, Tony collapses, Bradley becomes Alex's stooge to work against Alan...soaps just don't do these type of big, ballsy events and stories in all directions are set up or pushes it to the next level. Soaps couldn't afford to do events like this anymore.
Harlee NBC had high hopes for Texas. Originally, the show was supposed to be a historic piece set in the old south post civil war. Obviously not the show that got to the screen! NBC wanted a show that they could take to night time tv to go head to head with Dallas. They sent the creative team back to the drawing board and came up with Texas. But oh wait, Beverlee Mckinsey is walking! She was exhausted from playing Iris the evil bitch and wanted to spread her wings a little. Actually she wanted to do a sit com..... Her scenes with Vivian and before her with Louise, her maids, convinced me she could do comedy. But NBC didn't want to lose her, so they said ok. We will vindicate Iris and make her the star of the new soap. Of course anyone would be a fool to pass up the opportunity to headline in their own tv show so of course she said yes. Well Texas was a red hot mess from day one. It had a cast full of bad actors. The stories were scrapped and retooled so many times by the time it aired, that nothing made much sense. The pacing was way off and the horrors! Iris was GOOD!
Well the first fix was to get Iris back evil! Killing off the character of Alex Wheeler was the move they made. It was bad casting to start with and Iris and Alex had no chemistry to speak of. Plus that whole love story was rushed to the point of ridiculousness. So Alex was gone and the story focused on Iris keeping Dennis from making a big mistake by being with that lowly Paige woman! Beverlee had no desire to be the villain again. Topped with the fact that the show was really bad, she packed up her bag of tricks and went home. The show worked on getting the cast right with a bunch of firings and new characters. The stories were getting better too but had yet to find an audience. Texas was all but sunk when Gail and Pam got together and gave Pam her very first head writer job. I really don't think that has ever happened before or since, that a complete amateur got a head writing job. Apparently she had some very good ideas (she did) and Gail goes why not? We are probably canceled anyway! Pure genius! The last several months of Texas were heartfelt heart tugging, gut wrenching pure joy for the viewer. Unfortunately the show was unplugged already. NBC had given up on the show and weren't paying attention. But CBS was! They basically grafted the show onto the venerable but aging Guiding Light and created GL's golden years.
Mark, You just explained the difference between Iris & Alexandra...P&G this time gave Beverlee her Iris character but with heart and not all villain...Beverlee could play with your heart as the Baroness. She was great in comedy and they had Alex some really fun stories with lots of humor. Alex & Alan was a blast! Alex & HB seeing each other was nothing but pure fun, getting lock up in fur vault...HEHE..HB was buying her a fur...Vera. Maybe that's why she took the part. I read a long time ago Beverlee before she left Texas had suggest to P&G to look at Pam's ideas for the show...after Texas Pam came GL and Beverlee conquered!
Thanks marknsprmo for the trip down Memory Lane. Those were some great days, back in high school, right before football practice, watching 'Texas'. I remember the whole 'thing', although you gave some great details I didn't know about. I didn't know that Beverlee thought she could do 'comedy'. She probably could have pulled it off.
Iris's 'big change' when she got to 'Texas', becoming 'nice' after Alex Wheeler, then leaving the Show, was so disjarring. Then, the Producers felt like even making gorgeous-bi+ch Rena Decker a 'nice girl' after her meeting her 'true love' Ben (?) Wheeler, was too much. Both great villainesses were de-fanged in an 18-month period. I think this doomed The Show, and it never recovered.
@marknsprmo: Robert Kelker Kelly would have loved 'the level of acting' on Texas. It appeared to be very good. I think Texas could have survived if it had been brought to CBS and placed after Y&R and produced by Bill Bell.
LOL david! I doubt that RKK would have appreciated Texas. He liked the rough and tumble Another World group who were like old school thespians. I always imagined Betty Davis sitting around with Connie Ford drinking martinis and shredding the newbys! RKK might be a bit intense but he usually gets the job done. I really did like his Sam on Another World. And for me he played the hell out of Bo Brady. I think his concept of who Bo was was closer to what the character was supposed to be.
hey mon! It was Grant Wheeler that Reena was hooked up with. I loved Reena. She was one of my favorites. I was just thinking about Grant and the Wheelers and the Wheeler house. Did this family and living room ever remind anyone else of the Abbotts and their living room on Y&R? Grant and John were practically the same person. One could certainly draw paralels to Reena and Jill. Grant's son was nice unlike Jack but his daughter was smart and nice like Ashley. And Grant's ex wife and Dina were spitting images personality and physically for each other. Then their houses were exactly the same lay out. Both families even had a maid that was a regular cast member. I just always thought it strange how similar these two families were.
Vanessa, I want as my Aunt. I want Iris as my Mother. Now I can't get Beverlee McKinsey out of my head... Everyone can't compare, except for maybe Judith Chapman.
If I could write for Y&R, I would make Gloria rich, and have her get even with Lauren, for her son's sake.
Here we go...and I don't mean to trash prior regimes, but if that LML...hadn't killed off John, we'd hopefully still have Glo in the Abbott mansion. She'd be rich, and it'd be so much fun to watch.
We need that "wicked" character that we are currently lacking on the show.
I started watching soaps in 1971 (One Life To Live was my first). Over the years I watched Love of Life, Search For Tomorrow, All My Children, The Doctors, Days of Our Lives, The Edge of Night, Another World, Somerset, Texas, Santa Barbara, Ryan's Hope, Lovers And Friends, For Richer, For Poorer, Capitol, The City, The Bold & The Beautiful, The Young & The Restless, Port Charles, As The World Turns, Guiding Light, and Generations. A major soap fan am I. Love the genre. My favorite actresses from soaps: Erika Slezak, Kim Zimmer, Beverlee McKinsey, Susan Flannery, Judith Light, Robin Strasser, Dixie Carter, and Debbi Morgan.
@pferrando: I would love Amelia Marshall to join Y&R as a villainous business woman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KnOebZghnE
I want some dastardly woman to come in and take Newman down.
Me too! I was trying to think who the "bitch" could be.
Jill is so watered down these days since we never see her...Phyllis is going through a much needed calmer day...Glo is a no show...
So a new character in this vein would actually be welcomed even though I'm kinda tired of the "The New and Recasted Restless".
I hope this is in the works, because we need some evil bitch. Not over the top psycho, just a good soap villainous!
