@harlee490 - Thanks for posting the clip. Looking forward to what will happen.
It's a good promo, and at least it's a snow storm which is a logical happening in WI this time of year. I lived there for 23 years so I remember them well. I remember MAB having Sharon and Phil in a WI cornfield in mid May where the corn was shoulder high. Uh...that doesn't happen until almost late summer. You never knew what she'd try to make us believe.
I liked the snow storm on the show, I think it was 1983, when Jack and Jill (Terry and Brenda at the time) got stranded in a cabin, and Lindsey snapped the pics of them getting together. I was in college at the time and the University's TV room was PACKED with fans watching it and reacting.
Great story back then, and I think they chose some good teasers for this "storm". Can't wait for the Nikki story to unfold. So promising.
@pferrando - That was an awesome storyline (w/Terry and Brenda) which went on for years if I'm not mistaken.
I agree. That was the beauty of the writing back then. A lot of people keep mentioning that attention spans are different these days, but all the soaps that have gone by the wayside lost their way mostly by replacing core characters and replacing their executive teams over and over.
Bill Bell told solid stories that could go on for years, and I think there are still a lot of us that remember his style and prefer it.
That's what really bothered me about MAB. When she had a story or a character that worked, it was always rushed and never fleshed out.
Pferrando...if you remember the story you are speaking actually started with Deborah Adair (not many but I liked her as Jill) then that temp filled in for a very short period (maybe a month)and "the of Jill Abbott is now being played by Brenda Dickson...BAMwas back in the role. Brenda finished the story but Deborah had several stories in Jill's history, was Jill when married John and got pregnant w\Billy for example.
The Blackout...June 30, '1992...Friday's cliffhanger of GL and what people were doing the last minutes before the blackout and with whom... and the first time Ross & Blake made love was the blackout (second link) HOT...with my Blake Sherry Stringfield A few things I forgot effing Bridget caused the blackout, Ed is currently in the affair w\Lillian and Mindy left Nick at the alter!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu6K7q0br5w Ross & Blake
If we can get these kind of stories from Josh & Jill I will be tremendously happy.
Here we go guys!..Summer's ass is toast, her sins in the bully story is coming to fruition today.
"Tomorrow on #YR, Summer’s actions are revealed to Phyllis, while Paul learns the truth about Jamie" from CBS twitter this morning.
Deborah Adair did a good job as 'good' Jill, Jill the victim of Katherine's bullying. I still remember when Katherine and Dina ganged up on Jill during a Christmas Party in 1982, and I thought, "This is weird, Jill is truly the victim." Deb did a great job, and was welcome relief, from you-know-who (Brenda Dickson).
@lance_prentiss...I have to make this comment...for awhile you didn't have any kind picture...BUT I know the name( )......
Lance & Lori to THIS day is my favorite Y&R couple! PERIOD. Y&R's '70s was ROCKIN' & wish we could have dvds. People that are not familiar on real ,70s Y&R but know the stories that we "all" have orally passed on...would fall in love w\beginnings of Bill's golden soap.
I'm SOOO glad the picture you have now of "lance_prentiss" isn't Dennis Cole ...but Lance Preniss! John McCook!
It tells me something about you...so I always read your posts
@harlee490 - Thank you for your kind words (I always read your posts also). By far, Lance and Lori were also my favorite Y&R couple. I liked Dennis Cole but John McCook was the "true" Lance in my book. I so wish that we could have dvd's from that period to relive those storylines (the mother-in-law from hell Vanessa Prentiss, the Lucas/Leslie/Lance/Lori quadrangle, the Fosters and Brooks).
@harlee490 I liked Deborah Adair in the role as well. I also liked her on Days of our Lives as Kate Roberts. She was much more of a sympathetic character in both cases. I did not see Brenda in the 70s so all I have to judge her by is the 80s part. I hated every minute of it and was so happy when Jess Walton took over. I remember at first they tried to make Jess style after Brenda in those costumes and puff up her hair. It didn't quite work but she had the character down pat. Jess has brought her own sympathies to the role but in a much different way than Deborah. But with Brenda, I was always against her version of the role. Not to mention her dreadful "acting" choices and the fact that she seldomly looked at her acting partners mostly choosing to look off stage (at the teleprompter maybe?) Melinda O Fee played Jill a short time during this period as well on a daily basis. Perhaps that is who you are referring to. Melinda did alot of nighttime tv but on daytime she played the last Mary Anderson on Days and she also played Charlotte Waring on Guiding Light (the same role Victoria Wyndom played before she snatched Rachel Davis on Another World).
I always thought Deborah Adair was a great Jill; she was playing her when I initially started watching in the early '80's and I remember when Brenda Dickson came back to the character for the second go-round I didn't like Jill as much. Of course, it also took me a minute to warm up to Jess Walton's take on the character--for some reason she always came off as very hard and harsh, much like Sarah Brown does with every character she plays--but now of course I consider her the definitive Jill Foster Abbott(and no, I'm not adding Fenmore because that particular retcon was absolute bullshit).
Mark..YES Melinda Fee...couldn't think of her. Horrible Jill, horrible Charlotte. Yes GL got rid of Charlotte fast. VW's Charlotte Waring Bauer was not Rachel Davis Cory. VW was pure evil bitch with Charlotte! Deborah matured Jill, she brought out more of Foster side. But Deborah could play bitch with Katherine, the chemistry was happening with JC. That was my friend Shawn's Kate was Deborah Adair. She likes Lauren but for him best Kate was Deborah.
Having known Jess from Capitol as Kelly, most CBS viewers knew her and Kelly was quite popular with fans. So when Jess came abroad it was a easy take for most viewers. Bill made a great casting choice. Lets be serious the Bell shows were never known for their or the best acting choices. Sometimes they find a gem and sometimes it was awful.
As far a casting choices and was always strong was P&G. P&G had the strongest cast directors for soaps. Look at the talent to emerge from the P&G soaps!
Brenda Dickson as Jill was awful, almost change the channel (the only thing one could do in the 80s). Her seduction of Brad Carlton by the pool bordered on humiliating for her. Very unlikable character Jill was under her guidance.
hey mon yes the "80s! Every soap thought they needed an "Alexis Colby" characater and Jill did that but not realistic Jill. She was much better in the '70s.
PS...I got some of Bill's best psycho clips for you hey mon, early psycho clips, I'm going to post
I have only known Jess as Jill. I started watching in the mid to late 80's but I think I just missed Brenda. When I started I think she was divorced from Joh already. I have always found Jess a great actress--one of the best in daytime. I looked at clips of Brenda and I was appalled(definitely an attempt to imitate Alexis). I don't know what she was like in the 7os --the clips I saw were 80s clips fron Youtube. I saw Debroah too
but couldn't recognise her as Jill at all, in fact I didn't even know until last month that someone other than Brenda and Jess played Jill. She seemed too tame to be Jill!
Brenda was aiming for Alexis Carrington but she only managed Mary Hartman Mary Hartman. The scope at which she played the role was completely comedic to watch although I don't think that is what she was trying to do. Her acting gave daytime a bad name. It was like she was on Carol Burnette's As the Stomach Turns.
Harlee I am with your friend as far as Deborah is concerned with Kate Roberts on Days. Her role was much softer and more maternal. As a woman with 6 kids to her name, her version always made more sense to me. As is Kate doesn't seem like a woman who would have so many children. Or any actually.
When I first started watching Y&R, Deborah was Jill. So she was the only person I had to compare the character to. So when Brenda came back, that was my first experience with her. It was quite jarring. I had trouble seeing why she was so popular in the 70s and I was so glad when they fired her and put Jess in. I immediatly liked her. She completely hit it out of the ball park from day one. It was perhaps one of the best first impressions on a recast that I can recall. The only other one that I can think of that went as well is when Gordon Thompson took over the role of Mason on Santa Barbara from my beloved Terry Lester may he rest in peace. Someone knocked out Terry and when he stood back up he was Gordon. It was a brilliant way of introducing a new actor quickly. But even then it took Gordon a little while to catch on to the character. Jess caught it right off. Then she made the part her own over time.
Brenda Dickson was HORRID as Jill in the 80s, based on almost every YouTube clip I've seen of her. She was great at comedy, although I am not sure if the "comedy" was intentional, or if it was just her chewing the scenery. Her attempts at drama were laughable at best.
I have seen a few clips of her from the 70s, but even on her best day, Jess Walton has always blown her out of the water in EVERY arena: drama, comedy, sassiness, bitchiness.........
Jess Walton is TWENTY times the actress that Dickson was!
So you gotta remember that Brenda created Jill and the character morphed into what it was by the time she left, and I know at lot of people will disagree, but she's part of the reason the show became #1. The performance was over the top, but so entertaining (IMO) opposite Kay. It WAS Y and R back then.
The writing was so spot on, and she really knew how to deliver those soap lines. No one else was like her on the show, so it didn't seem campy at all. She was such a character. I loved it. Loved it.
Since I had been watching for such a long time, it was difficult for me and a lot of the audience to warm up to Jess. Kinda the same way when they replaced Terry Lester and Eileen.
But yes, Jess is a better actress, but for me that doesn't necessarily mean a BETTER Jill. She's a different Jill and the role is now hers and I love her in it.
I still love to watch Brenda on youtube and I smile at all the scenes she's in. Perfection. Sorry to those that don't understand or agree. But she was such a big part of the show. The promos for her return in the early 80's were a big deal for the show at the time.
Pferrano...I do completely get what you're saying about Brenda...living through Brenda...I never said in any on posts I hated Brenda Dickson.
She was Jill at Kay's door and took the job as Mrs. C's assistant.
She was Jill when she met Phillip.
She was Jill when she had affair w\Phillip and bore him a son.
She was Jill when Kay run over the cliff killing Phillip
She was Jill that Phillip married.
She was Jill when Kay had her marriage annulment
She was Jill when she once again had affair and stole her mother's love.
She was Jill when aged Phillip
She was Jill married to John
She was Jill who got 20% of Jabot
Big part of history for Y&R...I hated her in the end before she left.
This is where we differ Jess is superior Jill to Brenda. But Brenda was Jill.
Okay wish I knew Y&R back then but I was too young. Didn't even realise she was married to Phillip. I loved Terry as Jack but I think the present actor is good too. In fact I fell in love with the Jack character beacuse of Terry. The prsent actor plays Jack differently but he is very good. To me Jack is both of them--naughty funny Jack(more like Billy) is Terry; Bergman is sympathetic Jack and a more serious Victor rival. Asley was always Eileen to me but I liked her replacement(not Ronn Moss's wife Shari!) --she was pretty pretty sweet Ashley who had a darling relationship with her siblings and dad.
When the original Mason left I found Terry a good replacement (I was actually envisioning him in the role before the replacement because the two actors play there waywad son roles so similarly) Gordon was a more srious Mason, again an excellent actor but Mason's humour was gone.
Sorry! Don't know why my comments were posted so often.
harlee. If you have ANY clips of Vanessa Prentiss that are watchable, and not ultra-grainy, POST THEM NOW! There will only be one Vanessa Prentiss, the ultimate villainess.
The only Y&R reserved (mother) villain who came close was Lilli Barber. Norma Donaldson, RIP, we miss you. Believable, so believable. The way that Lillie teated Drucilla. You all know the clip when Lillie told Carl Barber about Dru's conception, "If you wouldn't have gotten drunk (that night)..." Wow.
Let's talk Dena Megaron. Why can't we have Marla Adams on once in a while? Let's face it, Jack is mess in a big way, and a big part of it, is that he was abandoned as a teenager by his Mother. I think that bringing in Dena would have been a big help, or it could have been interesting somehow. #eck, she came for Katherine's/Marge's funderal in 2008, why not now? I want my Dena M.
hey mon...Vanessa Prentiss was Stephanie Forrester on steroids!
Yes the scene of her and Lori on the balcony when Vanessa jumped
They are rough but still watchable There's 2-3 clips of Dena, Terry's Jack, Patty. Deborah Adair as Jill, clip of Mr Chancellor the ultimate drunk Katherine scene clutching her bottle and some more
Had to mention to you hey mon..been hunting (no luck) when Peggy was in the cult...Bill's big Manson-Jim Jones type story...this cult was crazy. Peggy doing drugs, introduction of Paul, Paul, Nikki, Peggy all knew each other growing up...it was the Lauren, Paul, Tracy in their day. Early Nikki murdering daddy-dearest for molesting her and raping Nikki
All this talk about Jill reminds me that the character has not been treated properly by the writers for at least the last seven years. Making her a Fenmore was just the latest in an endless list of ill-conceived plot points.
And why did they need to kill off the woman she'd known as her mother for most of her life? They could have gotten the same effect by having her be seriously ill but recovering in the end.
OH you said SoapA...her character was Bill's "Erica Kane" character. The Brooks and Fosters have disappeared but Bill kept Jill Foster & Katherine Chancellor. Their was no confusion to viewers on who Jill was, she was a Foster...PERIOD! He wrote for Jill until he couldn't anymore. Yes had Liz die which could today be a great recurring character to remind where she came from in GC STUPID move.
Her character has been treated with such disdain the last 7 years.
PS...Brenda's Jill we owe much of Jill's history I personally liked Brenda's '70s Jill Brenda was much better playing the emotional side of being a Foster, but at the end of Brenda's era, I think Bill knew Jill\Brenda became a farce and immediately changed that with Jess. After Jess Bill wrote some great drama for Jill that Brenda couldn't play anymore as she did in the '70s.
Jill needs a really great story. I want to see a serious/emotional story for Jill, which is something we don't really see a lot of now.
I say hook her up with Marcus Wheeler. Let her fall head over heels for him, and then slowly find out that the guy is dangerous. Of course he would try to threaten her into staying with him. She'd become seriously uninterested in Marcus, and I'd have her begin to have an affair with Larry Warton again in the middle of Marcus Wheeler's next campaign. Have Katherine find out about Jill's affair with Larry, and kind of "blackmail" Jill (in Katherine's way) into taking over at Chancellor Industries, even though Jill at first seemed uninterested.
Then I'd of course have the Larry Warton affair go public, covered by Leanna Love and it would RUIN Marcus' campaign. He'd be infuriated, and that's how we'd learn his true feelings about Jill. Of course the guy would be a total ASS, but he'd genuinely have feelings for Jill, and she'd see this by his response to her affair with Larry.
Do something like that...which would give Jess Walton some good material to play...and it would tie her back into the rest of the cast. Marcus is now tied to Victor, Nikki, Neil, Leslie, Tyler, Avery, etc....so it would make Jill a prominent GC figure again.
Stoney07...yes have Jill in serious relationship with the Senator and Jill's sorid past becomes back to haunt her ass.
Throwing Larry and if Leanna Love can wrote a bio of Victor in "Ruthless" why not Jill in "Scandalous"?
I'm afraid that The Powers are done with Jill Abbott Fenmore.
When Josh G dragged her in town in November for a one-night stand with Tucker, and then to hang around the ol Chancellor Estate to badger Katherine, that about did it for me. Why bring her back? To give Mumbles McCall one more ride through the sheets? Plus, she never even saw Billy once these last few months, or got involved in the Jabot/Jack s/l even one iota.
Let's face it, MAB & Hogan at least tried to use Jill. Riveting describes what MAB & Hogan wrote for Jill and Billy, when they had their dynamic argument in Sept 2011 at Delia's custody battle at the Courthouse. And MAB & Hogan had Jill have a one-up argument with Chelsea when she returned in Jan 2012. MAB & Hogan did at least try to use Jill during her last great s/l under their tutleage, the Colin and Genevieve s/l. True, it didn't work, but at least they tried.
JFP & Josh G are no fan of women over 55 yrs of age... cause Jill Fenmore is gone, and may never be seen again.
I have mentioned, before, "Where In The Hell is Dina".
As to all the bru ha ha over who was/ is the "best" Jill - I have seen them all come and go.
Brenda Dickinson was sort of "campy" towards the end, but I think a lot of that had to do with the goings on in her personal life at the time.
