Ratings, Rants and Raves: New Women 18-49 Low For General Hospital
General Hospital's post-50th anniversary ratings slump continued the week of July 1-5 (Source: Soap Opera Network). The ABC Daytime drama dropped 121,000 total viewers over the previous week. However, GH was still up 90,000 over this time last year. The sudser was in last place in households, women viewers aged 18-49 and all key demos (tying Days of Our Lives among W18-34).
In story, Carly (Laura Wright) tried to force Morgan (Bryan Craig) to move out of the house of horrors that has become the Quartermaine mansion. Kiki (Kristen Alderson) lusted after Cousin Michael (Chad Duell), while getting busy with his brother. Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Shawn (Sean Butler) argued about their chemistry-devoid relationship. Okay, they really argued about his work for Sonny (Maurice Benard), but they should have been dealing with the aforementioned much larger issue!
Luke (Anthony Geary) left town to find a cure. Laura (Genie Francis) and Lulu (Emme Rylan) got all up in Tracy's (Jane Elliot) grill. Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) moved into the Corinthos compound. Nikolas (Tyler Christopher) agreed to bankroll Deception 2.0 and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) barbecued Emma's (Brooklyn Rae Silzer) pissy baby doll.
Still way too much Francophrenia (Roger Howarth) on GH these days. I'd bet money if this character was backburnered and retooled, while moving the AJ (Sean Kanan)/Liz (Rebecca Herbst)/Nikolas triangle to the front burner, the ratings would stabilize.
Thank the Soap Gods, Alexis and Shawn are dunzo. Bring back Rick Hearst, STAT! Imagine Molly (Haley Pullos) learning the reason she had to grow up without a father, was because her big sister Sam (Kelly Monaco) mopped Alexis' floor with her bottom, while Rick served as her human Swiffer Wet Jet.
Speaking of Sam, she's much too sexy to be toting around a sick, ole' baby all summer. Let's hurry a miracle cure for Danny and get her back in ride-or-die mode.
Sam is an action/adventure character. Her fan base fell in love with her against-all-odds escapades with Jason (Steve Burton). A domesticated Sam is an uninteresting Sam. She should be the one investigating Ava (Maura West), not silly Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) —especially if both women are to be romantic options for Dr. Silas Clay (Michael Easton).
I'm enjoying Kiki and the Brothers Corinthos, though I think the storyline needs another female to flesh it out a bit. Paging Serena Baldwin! Scotty (Kin Shriner) would be livid at the thought of one or more of Sonny's sons canoodling with his heiress daughter.
The teen story with Molly and Co. is nice enough, except they all look like babies. There isn't the same lust factor as when Jagger (Antonio Sabato, Jr.) was torn between Brenda (Vanessa Marcil) and Karen (Cari Shayne). Since we're on the subject of Jagger (Seriously, when are we not?), picture his taut, massive, veiny body grinding betwixt Sam's legs—her hooker boots high in the air—then they go off to take down Ava's art theft ring!
