Which show do you think was the Best Soap of the Week?
Wow! It's hard to believe that OLTL & AMC are doing that well in the polls, considering that those two (previously cancelled) soaps can only be viewed on the internet.
Did that many people, on here, really subscribe to Hulu Plus?
@Screamer_2012: You can watch them for free or subscribe. So it is easy to see why they would do well.
Screamer - I subscribed to huluplus cause I dont enjoy watching on the internet. I know alot of you guys do but its not for me. With that said, I still become frustrated having to sit thru "commercials"? Its no where near as convenient as the dvr. And its taking me a while to get used to watching. Really, all I can fit in is 1/2 hour 4 days a week. I did watch it on line a few times cause I wanted to make sure I got it in for the day, but I dont like it.
And what I am finding a turn off is how everyone either walks around with a computer or all tech savy stuff, and they talk about how everything has gone on the computer and they are stressing that so much, you know its to brainwash us that this is the new age. OK im not ancient, but there is a time and place for everything, and I dont appreciate it being shoved down my throat. I get annoyed when Im trying to eat dinner out and everyone is staring at their phones or talking on them. Where is the peace from all this. I make sure I take myself away from it all and get some good old fashioned peace and talk face to face with people. This stuff could drive a person crazy in a long run.
Hey giogio, the computer stuff you mention and the cursing (and I'm far from a prude--it just comes off as so try-hard and unnecessary) are the two things that are driving me a little crazy about AMC and OLTL. I hope they tone both of those things down as the shows go on, because they don't add anything.
Hey bishbay, glad you mentioned it. I am happy these shows are back on but Im really struggling with them. Im no prude either, and you are right, all that is unnecessary. They say its not your grandma's soap opera. Well, Im not a grandma and Its not what I call a soap. I dont know down the line how long I will stay with them, because right now, I am struggling with them. I have to be honest.
Y&R was the best BY FAR to me this week (surprise, surprise)
Michael finding out about Lauren's affair, and that INTENSE argument with Lauren.
Traci returning to town and warning Jack about Phyllis.
Creepy Fen damn near stalking Summer, and that little run-in with Kyle at the gym.
All things Phyllis and Jack.
I'm intrigued by who is doing this to Leslie and Neil...
I like NuAbby (reaaally surprised by that one)
Dylan/Avery aside, I think Y&R was the best of the week. There was storyline movement, lots of intense moments, and...yeah, I thought it was the best this particular week. I honestly haven't voted Y&R in a good minute...despite what some may think. lol
I know you can watch them for free on Hulu, but I'm just surprised (& happy) to see that AMC & OLTL are doing so well on the polls on here, considering they've only been back on for a couple of weeks.
As for the swearing... I'd like to see them tone that down a bit, but amp up the love scenes. I'm hoping we'll see Cutter's bare butt, eventually.
I tuned out of AMC & OLTL after the first week. Yawn. Y&R is the best.
nysam - think im signing off also. So sad this didnt work for me. Just wanted to know if anyone has the info, how many weeks are these shows on, and how many off?
@giogi: There is no off time. They film more than one episode a day. So there will be a continuous run-though without a break. By the way I am tunin into both shows. Especially love the classic All My Children. But I am also a fan of Y&R too. So my choice was AMC!
Y&R was really good this week.
Return of Tracie. Phack going front and center. Fen entering into the fray in a major way. Michael and Lauren's confrontation. The 'Who is Rose?/Neil's missing things' s/l?
Josh G is doing a great job. Maybe I can even learn to like Dylan.
GH had me this week with the Nik/Liz/AJ triangle and the mystery surrounding Morgan. The well done introduction of Ava Jermone and the fact that this show really is playing it's vets.
Y&R had a great week too and was back from boredom. Seeing Michael and Lauren this week really had me at the edge of my seat this week. Traci's return and Phack - which I absolutely LOVE - was another great thing.
I'm still not warming up to Steve Burton and his awful acting but I guess that's another story.
I also enjoyed B&B this week with crazy Caroline and Brooke being pregnant. Just some great soapy scenes. Not all good but B&B can do a lot worse so I'm just happy that's in a much better state right now (which of course, knowing Brad Bell, can change every week).
@hey mon: To like Dylan you need to drink 3 jager bombs.
1. Pour half a can of chilled Red Bull into a cocktail glass.
2. Pour 2 oz. chilled Jagermeister into a shot glass.
3. Drop the shot glass straight down into the cocktail glass.
4. Chug the resulting mixture down.
After that you will like Dylan. But for maximum likeage you have to drink every episode he appears on.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one. I watched both the first week and was happy to see them back. But now, my interest hasn't been held. Last week so many people stated that OLTL was the best of the week and I stated that it was because fans were just glad to see them back. Of course I got backlash for the comment but I stand by it this week also. If anyone is saying that AMC or OLTL is the best of the week, then they can only be doing it out of love for the show's return because neither were "tune in tomorrow" worthy.
robertscorpio, I felt so bad to admit that I wasnt enjoying it. It is in my expectations, once again, the death of a dream. I should have listened to my friend TV Gord and his take on the whole thing. We tried.
DC team, I accidentally hit the offensive flag on one post...sorry!
I have yet to sample AMC, however, I am enjoying watching 30 minutes of OLTL four times a week on my laptop.
OLTL received my vote this week.
AJ needs to step it up in the romance department where Liz is concerned, because he's on shaky ground after humping Cujo. Blech. Niz is just a bit fat no where I'm concerned.
OLTL gets my vote this week again for making a comeback, with GH a close second to me despite the terrible relish storyline!
I thought Y&R was really good this week; only low points for me were Kevin/Chloe(thank God for the FF button) and Dylan/Avery(when they're together; when separated they're tolerable).
Lauren/Michael--what can I say? We knew it was coming and we knew it was gonna be damn good. CLB and TB were remarkably good and Michael's realization that Carmine was the guy banging his wife was scary good(I really wanted him to go behind that bar and knock the shit out of that Jersey gigolo). And I love them revisiting the too-long-dormant Michael/Phyllis friendship. Plus, more Fen, which is always a good thing; that is one messed up kid--and he knows it. Not sure anything good is gonna come out of that.
In fact, there was a nice increase in character interaction that we don't see much of late(Michael/Phyllis, Adam visiting Nick at the ranch, etc.) Hopefully this is a sign that the writers are moving away from all the two-person, islanded pairings that have been driving scenes in recent weeks.
Of course, Traci back on the canvas is always a plus in my book. Nice to see her stay this time is "indefinite".
Gotta say DAYS was also very decent this week, Dannifer notwithstanding(though the intro of JJ looks to be the next obstacle in the apparently-indestructible pairing). The Will/Gabi/Nick/Sonny story is picking up steam again. Kristen/Brady/John is full steam ahead; sadly, I don't even consider Marlena a factor in this scenario any longer--she comes across as increasingly weak and the only time I enjoy her now is in scenes with Will. Love that Justin is being brought in to EJ's plans to bring down Stefano. And of course, Sami being Sami is always entertaining. Now if they could just find something for Kristian Alfonso to do besides stir her coffee we'd be getting somewhere.
One Life To Live is as good as it ever has been. The swearing is true dialogue. I really like how they are blending in the veteran cast members with the younger ones and yet each set of characters are vital and not old fogeys being outsmarted by the younger cast members.
Jeffrey is getting a little high and mighty since taking down Dorian, waiting for her to get her revenge on Jeffrey. As she said to Viki, Dorian did the right thing. Yet Jeffrey and The Banner destroyed her Senatorial career, revenge is a dish best served cold.. lol
Hulu.com is free to watch OLTL. How much clearer do they have to make this fact? Hulu Plus yes you have to pay, same for iTunes.
If your on this site commenting, you CAN figure out Hulu.com/onelifetolive. Just a couple clicks and you are in Llanview..come join us..
I, for one, am enjoying One Live to Live and AMC. I never watched AMC before so it is all new to me. Always watched OLTL and am happy to see they found a way to bring it back. No bitching from me. It is actually more convenient for me to watch these two shows in the 25 minute format with my hectic work schedule
I get that these two shows were fortunate to start production again after being off for more than a year. Contrary to what some may believe, these began production just this year and obviously they still have kinks to work out as any new production would have. I can't believe the bitching some have on here after just two weeks. Fair weather fans for sure!
I do highly recommend getting the Roku or iTunes streaming device for your tv. I paid like $85/ ontime for a Roku device and stream both shows on my tv. I do have to pay the $7.99 /month for the Hulu plus subscription that streams thru Roku
Thanks for bringing these shows back!
@plant50....if you have followed the press on the reboots of AMC and OLTL over the past few months you should know that the people hired behind the scenes are all the same people who have worked on AMC & OLTL for years. There shouldn't be kinks to work out. That's why these people were hired. They are following into the same traps they fell into when they were on ABC. The teams behind the scenes should know better than anyone where they erred back circa 555-5555 to get canceled in the first place. These shows where touted as being for a new generation and they are the same as before. Sad to say but I don't see them making it past the end of the year.
I voted for DAYS.
It has been surprisingly good lately, and I've completely managed to ignore Dannifer, and I'm choosing to pretend that this JJ thing won't bring them to the forefront once again.
Glad that you are enjoying the shows, but for us that are not, I don't think we should be labeled fair weather fans. The same way after only two weeks you are able to give your assessments of the show, the rest of us should be too. My particular issues with the show has nothing to do with the format or length of the episodes. So far, the stories are not compelling to me or makes me want to tune in tomorrow to see what happens. Now I am giving both shows the benefit of the doubt in thinking that maybe they are treating both shows as new shows instead of continuations and want to try to introduce the characters before they dive into the drama and action. So while Im not writing both shows off, I will not pretend that either are at the best that they have been, as someone posted in a previous post.
Im a Die hard fan since the 70's of amc and oltl. Fair weather needs to get a grip. Im not going to pretend to love anything. pfft
YoryLA, DAYS has been good lately. The whole Bristen thing, now with John, is going full throttle, and is just as good as any s/l that DAYS has done in the past.
Loving AMC and OLTL. The harsher language is not a big deal at all, and it's 2013 people! It's how many, many real people actually talk. The stories are a bit edgier, and while they are still soaps, I think they reflect the world we are living in. Also, the swearing and language has totally be in character and context. Viki's not dropping F-bombs. Todd, Blair, Matthew, Dani are the ones cussing. On AMC, Jesse (A COP!), Zach (A CASINO OWNER), AJ (A SPOILED RICH TEEN), the thugs holding Cassandra are the ones doing a majority of the cussing. Don't you think these people would be cussing if they existed in the real world?
If it bothers you, don't watch. But, soaps lost touch with viewers, and risks must be taken if they want to survive long-term. Glad that are taking some. Plus, if it becomes a major issue, they can tone it down, and I read they already have.
Here's to a long new life for both soaps!
I liked OLTL but it still needs time to fit in to 27 minutes or so , without a lot of filler. It seemed like Rama and Vimal had the most interesting exchange, surprisingly. Though I won't watch regularly til it's available online where I live. Otherwise, B& B was quite good. It seem ed tlike the pace was quickened up and the dialogue was some more weight to it . Suffice it to say that "Maya" is an excellent addition to the show - acting wise.
I wish there were some Latino or Asian characters on the show ( or any show for that manner).
I don't vote because lets be real would it make a difference...hell no. The best soap for me was Y&R this past week. Yes, is it my soap, but compared to April and with more vets w\Phack, Lichael, Fen, Summer, Tracy coming home and what it had most importantly was Katherine's last scene...enough said.
A close second was a toss up for myself between B&B & Days, both are in high gear. Days it wasn't Bristen but good, it was nobody but Nicole\Vargas\Eric mess...I'm loving that ugly mess
@nysam & Giogio: Okay let me make something clear. Take a look at history:
When soaps transitioned from radio television there was a learning curve. And when they transitioned from 15 minutes to a half and later to an hour, there was also a learning curve. When soaps went from live to taped there was a learning curve. We also saw a learning curve when soaps went to HD. Now we are seeing a learning a curve when it comes to preparing soaps for the web. The genre has survived each transition.
On the other hand you have watched AMC/OLTL for less than a week and you are already signing its death wish.
If you know anything about this genre (which you seem to know not a lot based on your comments) then you know it takes 6 months to get a good handle on where a show is going. This is an important fact of history.
When Bill Bell took over Days and Agnes Nixon took over Another World, it took them both 6 months to get those shows going in the right direction. And for Nixon 6, months in Another World was beating General Hospital in the same time slot in the ratings. Bell for all his worth had turned Days into a stellar high ranking drama.
Heck with Douglas Martin's writing talents and Gloria Monty's Executive production skills General Hospital went from cancellation preparation to #1 daytime drama.
Bill Bell in the early 80's made a dramatic change to Y&R phasing out the Brooke's and The Foster' and focusing on the Abbott's and the Newman's. And there were people like you two then who signed their death wish. In fact Y&R's rantings went down before they went up. And now the show has been #1 22 + years in counting.
And sure Bill Bell, Agnes Nixon and Douglas Marland were masters at their craft, but even they weren't over night successes. They knew as well as the networks that it took time effort and commitment to get things done. They were looking at the bigger picture.
Let me also add that most people like you didn't even believe that Agnes Nixon's babies could make it to the web. And yet they are here.
So if in one to two weeks of these soaps airing on the web you have made that deep of an assessment about soaps (as one of you says) were watching since the 70's, maybe you have become out of touch with today's realty and should retire before the company is taken down with your short and out-of-date concept of business.
Because from where I sit these soaps are charting a new path for the entire genre.
And remember Rome was not built in a day.
"Well if people like you would just BACKUP and give me a little wiggle room. Maybe I'd learn.." - Dru
david46208 ...even though good...your post was way too long and preachy. I love your knowledge & history about soaps ...but soaps fans DON'T get what the longevity which Agnes or Bill was doing in stories back in the day (but few that live in the era) and they well NEVER understand if you didn't live through those stories in that period...it's a constant battle between us and them...with those who did and those who didn't...I think most of times it's about the past regimes vs. new regimes on writing of soaps...lets be serious. Today soaps don't have the comfort to "building the characters" so they are force fed by the networks. If a network would wake up and build characters SLOWLY...boy they would have daytime fans HOOK...it's simply ...but what works...slow build...
david462 - You let ME make something clear. I dont care about any learning curve and you are offensive and obnoxious. Ive been watching those two soaps since frigging day one. Im the one who was watching when Vicky was being played by Gillian Spencer and Susan Lucci was pregnant in real life on the show with her first baby so dont tell me I dont know anything about soaps like you are such an authority. Why dont you go watch your soaps have fun and dont talk to me. Dont you have anything else to do in life than to worry about soap operas and want to humiliate people who dont share the views you have, that you have to get down to the deepest parts of your soul to insult them hitting below the belt. You are just dropping names to sound like you know what you are talking about. Cant wait till NYSAM gets wind of this one.
Oh God Screamer 2012! I thought I was the only one hoping to see the backside of Cutter on the oltl reboot!
@harlee490: We love the slow build. By the way I was at church this morning so I felt like Reverend Soap. And as for Y&R yes they are force feeding us Steve "turtle acting" Burton. Every scene I want to say "cue the violins." But at least we don't have to go back to this writing:
If you think this clip is slow build...david46208 as Kevin as "chipmunk" you are sadly mistaken! If this is a joke..NOT AMUSING! It this your way to somehow give "Tyler" props...you are sadly mistaken...not amused! Why would you even put this clip on....seriously...it's MAB? I don't like the joke!
David, you were right on the mark. I did not see where you were "being offensive" as stated by another. Thanks for clarifying how it takes time to transition from one forum to another.
@harlee490: Settle down Reva! I was saying that we don't have to go back to that mess. So as we don't care for Dylan. We're in a better place then we were before...
I personally DISAGREE what david46208 and I'M OFFENDEd...what's not welcome on my part...I would rather watch Steve Burton then MAB...plain and simple!..I'm sorry but I found this (which is part of MAB ugly history, sorry hey mon) but if you David called "Steve Burton as "turtle" acting so be it...but that clip is 85% better then MAB's story with a Chipmuck and why ppl are through with Kevin...give me a break if you think that SB is that bad...he's not!
Excuse me but I am Reva Shane Lewis ....I guess attitude!
plant50: Thank you. You know also B&B debuted during the 1986-87 season.
Here were it's first 7 year ratings and ranking:
1986-87: 5.6 (#8)
1987-88: 5.4 (#8)
1988-89: 5.7 (#8)
1989-90: 5.7 (#6)
1990-91: 5.7 (#5)
1991-92: 5.5 (#6)
and then 1992-93: 5.9 (#3).
I was not until 2000 that B&B went to number 2 and maintained that position. And that is a lot more time then we have today to get any soap there. But as long as you have a year or more you can turn the ship around with the "right team in place."
What I do praise the most about AMC/OLTL is that they high ranking on itunes and Hulu during their first week's run. Not many people expected that to happen. But it happened.
@harlee490: it is not a comparison acting-wise, It is talking about that the stories in general under Josh G. are better than that mess from the past.
Yes, you're right David, I can't help it but I've got a Reva Shayne attitude...it comes natural...you know what I'm sayin' suga? "I'm just a slut of Spfd" ...just saying...
David, in reference to B&B, it is no secret that Sheila Carter put that show at #3 and #2. Before Sheila, B&B was a show about Ridge and his parents. In other words, it really wasn't that exciting. When Sheila left, the necessary changes had been made. Getting rid of Dan Trachta, and bringing in Windsor Harmon, etc.
And harlee, you know I'm going to defend my girl MAB. There was a lot to say that was really good about MAB, and alot to say of what was bad.
The Chipmunk was bad. The War Between Katherine and Ashley was good.
One doppleganger - Patty and Emily, was good. Two dopplegangers - Sara and Lauren, was bad.
Genevieve messing up her wedding to Jack was good. Gen playing a weird song from a balcony, while threatening to let Colin drop to his death was bad.
So all Writers have their good and bad.
Loved Patty and Emily and also Gen after she toned her performance down. The chipmunk ranks right up there with Clear Springs.
So yes, hey mon...they all have their bad.
I think Josh's Clear Springs/Chipmunk moment so far is "The Dylan/Avery Backstory"...complete with rock and dog tags.
Fridays Y and R was so good, I had to vote it #1, followed by B and B and then AMC.
hey mon, pferrando, it is so nice to see someone be real and admit that it was not ALL bad during MAB's time.
Yes, she had her weak, and even terrible storylines, and I was not surprised she was let go. However, there were many points in MAB's writing and cast that I loved. All in all, for me the seasons from 2010 to 2012 was the best Y&R I had seen since LML took over in 2006. The fact was and still is that the "golden age" of William J. Bell can never be retrieved. That is a simple fact. So in that respect, that was to me the best Y&R "I could get".
When I heard who was coming in to replace MAB, I knew exactly what the show would eventually be like, and knew I was not going to be interested in viewing. It is well on it's way to be, as many have said, like GH was in her time there (not the GH there is now). A GH 2.0 of sorts. Generic, grim atmosphere, increased selfishness and un-heartfeltness, tries to look good but with little substance inside.
Thankfully, the saving grace that Y&R still has, are the talented actors and the classic, legendary characters. And I hope they remain, because they will ultimately prove to be the saving grace of the show. People will tune in as long as they see DD as Paul Williams, EB as Victor Newman, MTS as Nikki Newman, JW as Jill Abbott, etc.
The one thing Maria was good at I will say was picking out Emmy reels for her show...a lot better than most...but I just can't like nothing about her or LML in any degree.
I figured as much on you defending MAB...it's a given hey mon. We just disagree on what is good for Y&R...I'm a-ok with that, we have our own taste. What shutters me is how Y&R of being an opulent and graceful soap, which many tried to descend into a hot mess starting w\LML & continued w\MAB, Josh is comparably better by leaps & bounds....at the same time his weakness is glaring also with Ken\Cupcake Barbie show. Its and wait and see but how many viewers will leave before something is done to correct the problem? That's the question? When individual shows hit MAB area of ratings of 3.0 isn't fairing well for Y&R.
You know I have to getup on my pedestal and defend Maria Bell. The 3 siblings against Victor, classic and priceless. Victor grasping right before the arbitrator ruled, and trying to strike a deal with Adam to perjure himself. Then Victor, finally, losing the $1.5 billion. A great s/l.
I wouldn't expect anything different for you hey mon about MAB...I realize you have a deep love for MAB...did you see the clip I posted for you of Kay\Jill during Maria's tenture? Jill all drunk when Katherine married Murphy?
