After Seeing The Following's Final Chapter, Do You Still Want More?
I’m still not sure if I’ll return for Season 2. Although, I am curious to see what storylines might unfold. Should he survive, I wonder if next season could follow Ryan in prison, for the execution-style murder he’d committed earlier. Will it just be implausibly overlooked, or did Mike hide the body? Mike and Ryan have slowly developed their own bromance, and now Joe Carroll seems to have bonded the broken men together forever. Covering up a murder might not have been something Mike from the beginning of the season would have done, but he’s now touched by darkness because of all the hardship he’s faced at Joe’s machinations.
If I do return, I hope the season is better plotted than this. Earlier in the season, there was an entire episode devoted to Debra’s back-story. Why? It was really involved, and served no purpose. We didn’t need it to demonstrate her understanding of cults. Conversely, Jacob and Paul were two extremely engaging characters, with heavily hinted “daddy issues.” Why we couldn’t get a flashback of that? Maybe it’s all moot now, since they’re all dead. Then again, why did Mike, a character who’ll definitely be alive next year, never get any flashbacks?
Why even bother doing all those flashbacks in the beginning of the season, only to abandon them for verbal exposition? I think the use of flashbacks could have been much more effective, if it had seemed like the writers had known the arcs of their characters before they started writing. It seemed to just be made up as they went along.
What did you guys think of “The Final Chapter?” Will you be tuning in next year?
