ABC Daytime Boss Vicki Dummer on General Hospital: "It Has a Special Place in My Heart"
A few years back, the only time network suits spoke about soaps in the press, was to speak ill of them. However, with Brian Frons' and Barbara Bloom's respective careers having gone the way of the dodo bird, their replacements seem much more positive about the state of the genre.
Of course, this phenomenon could simply be because soaps themselves are in a much more positive place ratings-wise, now that Frons and Bloom are out of the game. In a Variety feature on the 50th Anniversary of General Hospital, Time Square Studios head Vicki Dummer had this to say:
“I’m thrilled to be celebrating (the show’s) 50 exceptional years on television. … As someone who grew up watching ‘General Hospital,’ it has a special place in my heart.”
GH was on cancellation watch a year ago. Today, the soap is on track to have its best season in five years, according to ABC and Nielsen. The sudser is No. 1 among the coveted women 18-34 demo, and is up 18 percent among total viewers season-to-season.
