Steve Burton on GH's Jason vs. Y&R's Dylan: "I Get to Have a Personality"
By Jamey Giddens on February 04, 2013

Soap superstar Steve Burton is finally able to get his grin on, now that he's no longer playing Jason "Stone Cold" Morgan on General Hospital. In the Feb. 11 issue of Soap Opera Digest, the new Young and Restless hunk talks about the differences between Jason and his current alter ego, secretive war vet Dylan McAvoy. Said Burton:

In the Feb. 11 issue of Soap Opera Digest, the new Young and Restless hunk talks about the differences between Jason and his current alter ego, secretive war vet Dylan McAvoy. Said Burton:
"I'm still trying to figure out who this guy is, but it's actually interesting because I get to play a lot more of myself," says Burton. "I get to have a personality. Jason was so stoic. Here, I am more myself and you get to see a real light side of me. I think I've smiled more on the show already than I ever have in my life."
So if GH had written in a few giggle fits for Sonny's (Maurice Benard) enforcer, Morgan would've stayed put? Who knew? I kid; I kid! What are you thinking of Burton as Genoa Cty's latest resident on Y&R? Sound off in the comments!

Ha! Good for him for acknowledging it. This comment makes me respect him for the first time. Congrats to Y&R fans for getting the Emoti-Burton!

I'm sure that Steve Burton had the sway with Guza and Phelps to request that Jason Morgan "smiled more." He had the power to convince TPTB that he did not need to go shirtless with one love scene per three years! I am sure he did not object to Jason Morgan being a leading character who often double-fisted handguns! Steve Burton is trying to convince the viewers that he will be significantly different as Dylan on Y&R and I sure hope so because Jason Morgan was often an one-trick pony!

I have to chuckle. My mom is 86 years old and Y&R is her favorite soap, after losing her beloved GL and ATWT. So far she can't make up her mind about SBu. Not wanting to sway her opinion, I told her that it's early and to let him settle in for a while. She said "Why can't they get Ashley back? All thse new people are confusing."
From her perspective, I have to agree with her on both counts. And yes, I do miss Ashley and ED...

Hey, he's has aired twice and if people can make a judgement on any actor not just SB that quick, well then no actor will get a fair shake on any soap. People~~ soaps have been stealing actors, writers, producers, since it started in the '50s! Actors today will never become "iconic" because of the viewers are so toxic nowdays...sometimes it takes patience which very few have here.

SwanQueen...
I miss Ashley too and she needs to be present. As much as I love ED as Ashley...Eileen is needed at Days the proof is in the uptick in the ratings. I want DOOL to surive and Eileen has been the ticket.
Perfectly content right now with Brenda Epperson back in the role and it's not jarring to long time viewers.

Wow, shocking that he would say that considering all those years he bitched about Jason Quatermaine and how he liked Jason Morgan better!

That just shows that soap stars probably seldom say what they really think in interviews. They say what their bosses want to hear.

My 70 year old mother called to tell me that she forget how goodlooking Steve Burton was. After watching him grimace and only wear black he really didn't pop. She said that he looks so handsome wearing different colors.

Harlee-I had no problem with BE during her time as Ashley (Shari Shatuck was pretty but beyond that, eh), and yes she brought a different take to the table which I enjoyed. For my mom it's more about "knowing" the actors in the roles they've been in consistently. (She never warmed up to CF's Mac for example).
nysam-SBu is completely new to my mom, as she has never watched GH
(although she did say he has has beautiful eyes)...

Jason Morgan for a very long time had been a problem character for me. Looking back at clips of Jason after the accident don't line up with what everybody says became of Jason after the accident. There was a reason Taggart used to call Jason "anger boy". He wasn't being ironic or sarcastic. Stoic people don't drive motorcycles through other people's home. Jason was a very emotional character after the accident.
Is this what you would call stoic?

Does anyone remember this Jason? Yes, this was after his accident.

By the way, not even Jason Quartermaine was corny enough to count down to the moment he's supposed to call his girlfriend and say "Ugh, I wanted to say [Merry Christmas] first". Okay, maybe he was.

I like Steve Burton less and less every day. I hope he has a good nest over there at The Y&R because he has certainly shit his nest over at GH. I was a HUGE Steve Burton/Jason Morgan fan but now I wouldn't watch him on anything. They need to recast Jason because obviously Steve has no love or loyalty for Jason or GH. He sucks!

That man has to pay his bills and he will say what he needs to say to be happy where is currently. I don't blame him for that...and that's not disloyal. that's being loyal to your FAMILY, by supporting them, which is what really matters. A gig is a gig at the end of the day, and if I didn't have to be, I wouldn't be loyal to my job either if I had another opportunity that I saw was better....jmo

This may just be me (and the lighting of the photos) but I can see a big difference in the characters emotional status just from the pictures.

SBu definitely had a little light work done on his face just before debuting on Y&R - he also looks like he lost a couple pounds. In every Y&R promo picture and on the show itself he looks unmistakably younger now.

It's funny because he claimed to love Jason's wardrobe. Jason also had a lot of emotion that was slowly lost over the years due to the writing. He also didn't want love scenes and got that. He didn't want Jason domesticated and even got that. Jason wasn't domesticated until a day or two before he was killed off.
But I agree, it's about looking for the job. This is what he has to do. Not necessarily good of him to say and I also agree that he has made some shitty comments, "what happens at GH, stays at GH," but you never actually know what's going on.
I don't know if he has had any work done on his face. Pictures are always airbrushed and the images above are in such contrast in terms of lighting, shot, make-up. He looks like he's been working out and lost a few pounds. That's all I see.

He's cuter when he smiles. I'm surprised, thought, that Burton said all this. I get that you say whatever the bosses want you to say. But wasn't his pal JFP the boss at GH? And isn't she the boss now at Y&R? So why didn't she know that he wanted to smile more at GH?

I don't get what he's saying because for the past couple of episodes he's been in, he still does that "box of pain" look except this time he does it with a ring box. I see no difference.

Really emotion? I have only seen one facial expression so far, and I could get descriptive, but it is early and someone may be eating their breakfast so, never mind.

It is nice to finally see Steve Burton smile so much. But, I'm still out on a limb about his acting. Still seeing the same wooden performance as he was as Jason on GH. But, I'm sure the more he gets into the character the better he'll be. Jill Phelps is really going all out to promote him and the "bad guys of Y&R". Why am I seeing a repeat of her years on GH? She always favored the male characters. Please make the women stronger and not just whining jealous shrews, as she did on GH.
