REPORT: ABC Gives Prospect Park Additional Time to Reboot All My Children and One Life to Live; Will It Be at General Hospital's Expense?
Someone leaking Prospect Park's renewed interest in rebooting All My Children and One Life to Live to the mainstream entertainment media has apparently worked in the production company's favor. I'm hearing that ABC has in fact granted Prospect Park an extension on their license agreement. Whereas PP originally had to get production of AMC and OLTL off the ground by the end of January 2013, they reportedly now have until the end of February.
The question is, if PP is successful in relaunching specifically OLTL, what would that mean for the characters of Todd Manning (Roger Howarth), John McBain (Michael Easton) and Starr Manning (Kristen Alderson), all currently part of the General Hospital cast of characters?
"Prospect Park has the option to give General Hospital notice to cease using those characters," explains an insider.
Say what? Say huh? Would ABC really allow a production company that hasn't proven successful in relaunching two defunct daytime dramas on the web, to stop their remaining daytime soap from continuing to benefit from the ratings boon the OLTL characters have helped bring about at GH?
"ABC doesn't really make any money on [All My Children and One Life to Live] unless Prospect Park goes into production with them, and eventually airs them," says a network mole. "They benefit if Prospect Park is successful, because that's when the healthy licensing fees would kick in."
Sounds like Mickey Mouse wants to cut off his cartoon nose to spite his face. It would be insane for ABC to even consider letting Prospect Park have the characters of Todd, McBain and Starr back. First off, the actors—who are under contract with ABC—likely wouldn't want to leave their cushy gigs on GH for an untested project.
Howarth specifically has become integral to GH's success. The actor and his character test through the roof with focus groups! Here's hoping Vicki Dummer continues to prove she's much smarter than Brian Frons by not letting this madness happen.

I'd be fine with the Mannings going back to OlTL, they just don't fit in GH, they seem unnecessary. I'd like to keep McBain though, I like him on GH lots more than I did on OLTL, and I liked him well enough there!

The OLTL peeps did squat for GH from the start. Actually, during the time when RC took a whole week off focusing on GH characters to bring the Mannings and McBain on and introduce them to GH after Robin's death, the ratings took a dive that week. I think GH's ratings have improved because of the GH stories and vets coming back. And I agree that Todd's a pretty good addition, but he's swallowed the show and is in the middle of the worst story currently on GH. Starr could have gone the week after she came. She's an obvious dud. McBain also looks like a loser for still being in Port Charles instead of going home to fight for his son. I'd be more than happy to see the OLTL peeps off my show. I didn't watch OLTL when it was on cuz the show sucked. And I resent having these people and their stories I know nothing about taking time from my show.

That is alarming. GH must have story planned with those characters. I wouldn't mind if they get incorporated after some time, especially if the "new" OLTL takes the time to set something up - with Victor Lord Jr or Natalie - so when the others move over there will be a good, explosive story. Although, 2 months seems like a timeframe not based in reality - especially for something that's not been done before. I wonder will the "ABC" soaps have an "editor", a la comic books, that makes sure stories don't contradict.
Although, please take Starr - even if the shows never get off the ground. I loved her on OLTL, but now I think that had to do with strong YA characters she bounced off of (Langston, Marko,...). She is the only OLTLer that still seems out of place for me. She seems so much louder than Kristina.

As a somewhat impartial observer who only wants AMC back, I think GH would do just fine without the OLTL characters, especially if long-beloved GH characters return to take their place, in good stories!

I hate to be a Debbie Downer because I know it still stings for many fans of AMC and OLTL but I just don't see Prospect Park getting their act together and making it happen for transitioning these soaps to the web. Thus why ABC gave them a little more time (a month maybe from what we're reading here) but the skeptic in me thinks we'll see yet another "oops...sorry" press release coming out. Honestly I hope I'm wrong ... but I don't think the Llanview transplant are gonna be leaving Port Charles anytime soon (and I like having Todd and John on GH.... now Staar...well **bite my tongue**).

Roger Howarth might score through the roof with focus groups because GH fans have only discovered him now but Todd Manning on GH just hasn't been the Todd Manning OLTL fans have come to know, love & thought they had recovered last year. Yes, Todd has Starr in Port Charles but where are the other characters that help define him? His sister Viki, his son Jack with whom he has yet to actively try to mend fences, little Sam, the little nephew he made promises to & Blair, the actual love of his life, etc.
Instead, we get to watch him get stuck in pointless baby switches, hold Carly's purse and lie to Starr about who killed his own granddaughter of all people to keep himself out of legal trouble. It's not entertaining at all. If Prospect Park is serious about getting reboots off the ground, yes, please take the OLTL imports. I'm fan of both GH & OLTL and I initially thought this merger would be great but then they stuck their supposed big fish into pointless stuff and I find myself actually getting more enjoyment out of the strictly GH portions of the show these days.

I love Todd, John, and Starr on GH!!!!!!
This is Todd Manning: snarky, irreverent, foolish, twisted, ruthless, yet loving to his daughter.
Todd and Heather have been an epic super couple of deviltry! How can anyone not love the combined manic twisted energy they bring to Port Charles??
John McBain is a good cop. Port Charles' Police Department was the home of the clueless before John and Anna Devane came to town.
Starr is a nice love interest for Michael.
I think people forget that a lot of GH fans were also fans of OLTL. Many watched the entire ABC soap line up. So, seeing the OLTL stars is great. If anything, I'd love a visit from some AMC stars. Where is David Hayworth? Could David and Cara Castillo come to GH to make mischief at GH??!!!

Ok @prospectpk if you are serious about moving forward with #AMC & #OLTL, here is my suggestion: WORK WITH ABC!!!
Work with ABC not aganist them. Tell them your plans. Maybe they will help you. Vicky Dummer seems smart & wants the soaps back. So work with them. Maybe even film both #AMC & #OLTL in LA. Have all shows, including #GH work together and keep the shows connected. Maybe ABC will put the reboots on ABC Family, SoapNET etc.
Do this right PP or dont do it at all.

ABCD should just admit that they screwed up by dumping OLTL & AMC in the first place.

I'm sure if PP moves forward that they will be smart enough to leave Starr in PC and bring McBain back to Llanview to wrap story up with Natalie and then send him back to GH to be with Sam. The only character out of the 3 that is important to OLTL reboot is Todd. Howarth is a talented actor and his return in 2011 was just kicking off. I would rather see him with Viki, Nat, Jack, Tea, Blair, Dorian, Sam than with Carly on GH. Besides Carly and Connie he really hasn't made connections on the GH canvas.

I am rooting for prospect park to get their act together. If OLTL & AMC are successful online maybe some other cancelled soaps are new ones can be resurrected.

Just like with the release that they are thinking about starting up OLTL and AMC comes word that they may poach back their stars that contractually they would need for the reboot. OF COURSE, they would have to go back because simply, OLTL without Starr and Todd wouldnt get the attention JUST like GH may not have benefitting from them being there.

PP should just stop while they're not ahead. I don't see this working out and ABC basically is giving them rope to hang themselves
What show you watching? This is the same Todd. I'm so sick of reading this. Just because he's not Blair's bootlicker anymore, doesn't mean he's not the same Todd. He's absolutely the same. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know the character at all.
Todd has evolved, he's not going to stay the same and not grow as a character like Sam or Connie haven't.

I agree that Todd seems different on OLTL, more campy. I think the OLTL characters should return to OLTL if PPs online version gets off the ground. Two months is a very short amount of time. I wonder if they had people lined up and working on story such as Fi-Core writers. Maybe that is why they don't sign an agreement with the writers union as of yet. Also, I hope one of the Disney partners allows for a rebroadcast on Cable.

I am sorry but the OLTL characters did nothing for GH's ratings. When they came and for months afterwards the ratings stayed the same or went down. Two things helped raise GH's ratings and that was the time change and bringing in GH vets for story arcs. Before that the ratings had remained stagnent. I am sure the OLTL characters brought in some new viewers but unfortunately they also chased others away. The truth is even though I enjoy Todd on GH, its mostly because he has very little in common with the Todd I watched on OLTL the last several years. He has been softened a lot and that has been a positive for me but he could be easily replaced on GH's canvas with Jax. Starr and McBain have never really fit IMO; McBain has been mostly absent recently and I haven't missed him. As a fan of GH and OLTL; I would love to see OLTL come back and GH go back to being GH with GH characters & GH history and OLTL characters in Llanview where I grew to love them.

I like John McBain so much better on GH. He seems to have more life, and I love his saracastic remarks. And, Todd, the man just makes me laugh. I want them both to stay on GH!

Well, so many unanswered questions...I would love to visit Pine Valley and Llanview again. However, I want GH's success to continue and I do think that Todd, Blair, Starr, and McBain have contributed to the success...I guess we will wait and see.

Prospect Park did have some OLTL actors signed up on their first kick at the can.
I thought GH had to wait for the PP agreement to end this December before they could sign Kassie to a GH contract.
Forget which other OLTL characters were going to PP. I do not think they had Todd or Victor on board.

I love amc and oltl but don't see Prospect Park being able to afford large casts anyway, so they might as well leave gh the way it is. Gh is better now than oltl and amc were, I do love them though!

If this is all true than someone at ABC is guilty of really bad negotiating. Why give concessions to the other side without asking for something in return? Loss of the OLTL characters at this point would be very bad for GH.
May be moot, because like several other commenters I don't think PP has their act together. It sounds like they do not have the funding and they orchestrated these press leaks in an attempt to show potential investors that viewer interest is still high.

The whole thing reeks of a shell game. ABC effed up by cancelling two of their 40 year old soap operas at the same time, and PP did not have the money to go online back in 2011. Maybe ABC is just looking for another way to make the fans ticked off at PP once their plans fall through and IF GH is ended next year.
As for the ratings going up with the OLTL peeps? Yes, but not with the actors who play Todd, Starr and McBain. I give all of the credit to RC/FV and the writers (most are from OLTL) who brought back GH faves, ended JaSam, killed off Jason and we no longer see Carly, Sonny, Jason and Sam five days a week!

I do not believe PPs plans will go through. Not sure I want them too either. It seems like water under the bridge now. Time to move on.
Having said that, if the plans actually do work, and OLTL is revived, I do not see the three characters going back as being any problem. They are okay characters, who don't bother me on screen (well, Todd sometimes) - but I won't be sad if they go. They are not essential to GH. The stories will go on without them.
And actually, I'm sure GH could use all the money it can get. Money that is needed to get back beloved GH vets. The fact is, the GH cast is too big right now. The cast size was just about right without the newbie characters of Felix, Britt, Sabrina, Ellie and Trey. I cannot fathom why they were brought on in the first place. Now the show has to deal with the fallout.
However, I don't believe the trio will be going anywhere even if OLTL is resurrected. I see FV fighting tooth and nail to keep them, and the actors themselves will surely not want to leave GH. So all this is really moot anyway.
Merry Christmas everyone

PP is going to fail again at this IMO.

I am not sure how I feel about this. If OLTL is revived, it will be with new writers...so just like there is a different GH under Cartini, there will be a different OLTL under the new writers.
Also, I am not sure that I agree that Starr, Todd, and John are the reason behind the ratings going up. If I recall correctly, all three characters were on the show and the ratings were still going down. The first increase came when GH moved to the old OLTL timeslot and has been on a steady incline ever since. So I credit the timeslot, Cartini, and the revival of old characters....before I credit Starr, Todd, and John. I understand Todd testing off the charts, because he is like that. But there were way too many factors for me to believe that removing those 3 characters will make the show tank (which is implied when they are given the credit for the increase in ratings).
Will PP fail? Likely? But this just proves that the "renewed interest" that ABC has in their soaps is bull. Ultimately, they will go after whatever gives them money, even if that means giving those three characters back to PP on a dime. Again, I don't think it will impact ratings at GH. I do think it will impact story if not written appropriately.

McBain is much better on GH than on OLTL. He helps improve the police scene. I can take or leave Starr. I love Todd on either show. I agree that for OLTL on PP to succeed, it needs Todd more than the other two.

It still cracks me up to see complaints from GH loyalists about the OLTL characters supposedly "swallowing the show" especially when you consider how GH has been more of an ensemble show this past year than it has been in about 15 years.
Unless and until Todd, Starr and McBain are on 5 days a week every week and all story lines revolve around them I would suggest not accusing them of having swallowed anything.
As for PP...I still have my doubts as to whether they will ever do anything with AMC or OLTL so there is no need to start panicking just yet.
