I liked them as a couple, to be honest.

So did I. I HATED when that storyline was dropped. It had such potential.

@thecourt99 @ Marcelle: The romance was poorly written. Given that Neil wanted Dru to be barefoot and making babies (which was part of the reason why their relationship ended at the time) it was out of storyline context for Neil to get with Victoria when she was a career woman. This was just the type of woman Neil did not want. So unless Neil had a change of heart about women working or being "stay-at-home-moms." Then it was totally off-base. Even Kristoff Saint John said as much about the pairing.

So obviously Y%R does NOT have a prob with interracial relationships! Hey as long as it's love who's complaining? Oh! YOU!

I said Y&R didn't invest long-term in interracial relationships so have several seats!

What's funny is that this was my only problem with the couple. It doesn't change the fact that there was a campaign to get rid of the couple due to the audience's lack of willingness to accept that on their screen. Y&R may have the most black viewers (or once did), but people speak louder when complaining than when they are happy.

It also doesn't change the fact that many couples don't make sense initially, but the investment is what builds either an understanding from an audience, or they fall so deeply in love with the couple that they don't care that it doesn't make sense.

Yes but hollywood as a whole has a problem w/ racial minority representations.

The new black actors are quite light skinned and have rather aquiline noses and facial features that make them more closely resemble white people. Does that make them less of a racial minority? Nope but it does make them more "ideal" candidates for racist hollywood.

hollywood has brainwashed the planet to accepting that being white is the “social norm” and thus racial minority actors who more closely resemble that “social norm” would tend to get more of the roles. The hollywood casting game is rigged against darker skinned Latinos and darker skinned African americans and it’s definitely rigged against Asian americans bec as a group Asian americans are the furthest from resembling white people.

Why do you think only racial minority women like beyonce are considered people magazine’s most beautiful? It’s bec she looks like less of a racial minority and more white. She usually has a blonde weave and her skin is very light skinned and thus she’s closer to the “ideal” of hollywood.

There are racialized factors that contribute to how hollywood defines what is “attractive” and then foists it onto the cultural landscape to lessen the employment opportunities for racial minorities and thus the presence of racial minorities. Thus the white establishment is protected and revered as the ideal.

I will not insult either you or me by arguing what we all know. But please dont insult me by telling me that this is all in my head. Y&R has an issue with writing for racial minorities in general. This was not always the case. Racism in daytime exists. We see it on screen everyday.

Ok I apoligize! and I mean it, never looked at it as you all are seeing it. I love Neil, and loved Dru & Malcolm, so never thought it was because of features. I thought it was because of Neils integrity, Dru's spirit, & Malcolms Looks! lol So meant no offence. At the time of Neil & Victoria , I was hoping for forever. When Neil & Ashley were together it came off with no chemistry to me. I hate the Cane & Lily pairing, but loved Lily & Daniel. So my reasoning is hereby stated. I can NOT judge what a person of color thinks, because I have not had the experience, but I know who I like or love by their actions.

I appreciate this sentiment, and I wish this was the rule and not the exception. But yes, to give credit, Y&R has dipped their toe in that pool that is called interracial relationships, but when the first hint of backlash came (with Neil and Victoria), they were quick to pull back. Meanwhile, they get backlash about other couples and seem to enjoy the buzz. To be fair, I don't know if there was as much backlash with Neil and Ashley, but there wasn't any chemistry there.

The romance never had a chance though. Who knows, good writing could have followed, that would've made the pairing, and Neil's choice to pursue Victoria make sense.

But it's been stated several times, by several people involved, and in many a interview, that Victoria/Neil was quickly dropped b/c the actors started receiving death threats, and other racist commentary.

And ldylkng, you aren't the only who would like to see Devon/Abby explored. There was potential there.

Y&R has a problem with race and ethnicity.

No Latinos for almost 7 years, from 2004 to 2011. Raul left the Show in 2004 (not counting his cameo in 2008 with Mac), and 2011 is when Ricky first appeared (look what happened to Pete Porte). So I'm glad that Adriana and the Detective are showing up.

MAB tried with Neil, Malcolm, and Sophia. That didn't work out well at all when MAB insisted on bringing Harmony on the scene. That little Moses was such a cute kid, I hope they can bring him back from time to time.

We can use some interracial romances. One cannot expect Tyler to settle for little ol recurring Lily as his love interest. Women and gay men across the Internet are wanting this guy at the same fevered pitch as they wanted Shemar Moore. Should be good for ratings.

Carmine I don't like, although he is one Italian left-over from the disgusting. disgraceful Veneziano saga of last Winter. The gay men and women are constantly drooling over him, so I think it's great if he stays.

I am not sure who Mason is, does anyone know? And it looks like Detective Alex is going to be a big hit, too.

Now to get chubby Summer back again.

Thanks for that. I liked Neil and Ashley and thought that they were sweet.

I agreed with everything you said except the two thoughts I quoted.

MAB did not try with Neil, Sophia, and Malcolm. They were rarely on. When you don't show characters except for once a week, it is hard for viewers to invest. That seemed to be the problem that I am hearing with anything Witers related. Fans are not invested because they don't play out the beats. The most I have seen people care about that story was when Sophia gave birth to Moses and they showed Malcolm's feelings. The entire time Sophia was pregnant we didn't get to see that. Can you imagine a WTD that centered around Sharon or Phyllis that only get play once a week and not even all players at that time. MAB did not try IMO. She gave the story the bare minimum.

MABs mistake was not bringing on Harmony. But it was putting Harmony in the Neil and Sophia triangle. Harmony should have been a love interest for Tucker from the beginning. THey shoe horned her in with Neil and she didn't fit there at all IMO. She should have been in a triangle with Ashley and Tucker. But MAB did all she could to ensure that wasn't possible by giving them the ugliest back story she could. She destroyed Harmony before she started almost ensuring that the character would not be well recieved. All in pursuit of a pairing with Neil when writing wise it made no sense. But Harmony is black and therefore although she has a bio child with Tucker, she still must be paired with Neil. And so goes the problem with race that Y&R has.

I think that Tyler is being brought in specifically for Lily. I hope to see him mingle with someone other than the Winters but it is highly unlikely being that we can't even get the Winters mingling with anyone but each other. And so goes the ways of Y&R.
