DEVASTATING NEWS: Dallas Star Larry Hagman Dead at 81

The entertainment community is reeling from the loss of Larry Hagman. He was 81. The legendary I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas actor died Friday at Medical City Dallas Hospital. He had been battling cancer. Said a family spokesperson:

“Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most,” the family said in a statement. “Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”

In 2011, Hagman reprised the iconic role of J.R. Ewing for TNT's summer 2012 continuation of Dallas. Co-stars Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) and Patrick Duffy (Bobby) were reportedly at his deathbed. Hagman had recently been filming Season 2 of Dallas, which is slated to air on TNT in January 2013.

RIP Larry!! So weird that he dies the 2nd season of DALLAS. Didn't the same thing happen with Jim Davis in the original DALLAS??

Not so surprised knowing he had various health problems associated with alcohol abuse all through his life.

One of the online reports said he had completed 6 episodes of Dallas Season 2.

This is so sad!!! First and foremost RIP Larry Hagman and thank you for giving us JR Ewing on both the original Dallas and the reboot series.

Scott Novick - I hope those online reports are true and that he was able to get that many episodes locked in. I trust the writers of the series to do well by JR and send him off in style! Wow...the absence of JR changes so much of the dynamic in Dallas. Bobby, Sue Ellen, Cliff, John Ross...

I am in total shock. God bless Larry Hagman he was the ultimate bad ass. JR Ewing was the best SOB on television. I pray that the producers of the new Dallas pay tribute to this great man. It's a cold sad night here in Dallas. RIP Larry

Yes, he deserves a big tribute. In fact, CBS ought to do a special on him, but I doubt they will. TNT, CMT, or TVLand could run Dallas marathons. TVLand should also feature I Dream of Jeannie.

We've just lost one of the great ones. Larry Hagman was a central figure in the history of American television. His importance cannot be overstated. He ranks right up there with Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson, and Walter Cronkite.

Jim Davis actually made it to the end of season four. It's hard to believe he didn't do more. He, too, left such an indelible mark on Dallas.

I'm watching my I Dream of Jeannie DVDs right now, and I just dug out my "I SHOT J.R." t-shirt that I had made up the day after he was shot. By the end of that summer, the same types of t-shirts had been mass produced and everyone was wearing them. It was 32 years ago this week that the mystery was solved, and again, I had a t-shirt made up that read, "I knew is was Kristin". LOL. Hagman was a phenomenon, no question.

I wish I could have seen his time on The Edge of Night. That was my first soap, but I didn't start watching until long after he was gone. It feels as though he has always been a part of my life. Thanks to his amazing body of work, I guess he always will be. Smile

May he rest in peace.

How glad he must have been to had the chance to portray J.R. once more before he died. So was the audience. He WAS that character and I believe in ways he died at the right time, a time which represented the happiest and most successful times of his life.

Thank You, Larry Hagman.

Rest in Peace to a legendary talent! I knew him from I Dream of Jeannie, but it was his role as J.R. Ewing that really made him iconic for me. We have lost so many greats in the last five years, but this one is indeed devastating.

I'm so glad his suffering is over. He gave so many people, so many wonderful memories. He worked right up until the end!

Oh no. Just saw this. Always loved him such a fine actor. Dallas the original was one of my favourite shows of all time and Hagman was the best villain as JR. RIP Larry 'JR' Hagman.

Such sad news. I remember being a kid in the late 70s/early 80s and after I would watch Dukes of Hazzard, my grandmother would say " I wonder what JR is up to this week?"

L.I.M. Mr. Hagman

I will miss JR and Larry! They have both been in my life for a long time. I remember watching I Dream of Jeannie as a child and always wondered at the time how Larry could play that role so well and then go on to be JR Ewing. I watched Dallas from the very first episode. Although I didn't watch as frequently in later years, the first season had me glued. One of the highlights is how mean JR always was. I thought it was Sue Ellen who would shoot JR. She really deserved the first shot!
My condolensces to his family and friends and to the closeknit cast of Dallas. I KNOW if Larry Hagman is a hole in our lives, what it must mean to those who knew and loved him (or even probably some that loved to hate him too!)
How ironic that Jamie put out the 10 dead patriarchs story this week. Now he has to update that list already!

Don't know why this news shocked me as much as it did since Hagman wasn't in the best of health but it is just so bizarre to think that an actor that has been a part of my entertainment viewing life for so long is gone. Felt the same way when Carroll O'Conner died too. Just makes me sad.

Having my coffee and booted on my computer and first thing I saw was Judith Light's tweet and went further down and was stunned by this Larry's passing. Sort of bit of deja vu in the way because Jock died sudden during the third season and it did create excellent drama with Jock's will and Ewing boys pitted against each other.

Very stunned that he passed. JR Ewing, The Man you loved to hate. One of the most iconic characters in the world. I think if any actor out there wants to learn to play a bad guy, watch JR Ewing at work. Larry Hagman did an episode or two of The Simpsons and did a short lived show called Orleans.

Larry Hagman had a fantastic career. Thoughts go out to his family and friends. He will be missed.
