General Hospital Patriarch John Ingle Dead at 84

The daytime soap opera community has been dealt another blow. John Ingle, who portrayed billionaire curmudgeon Edward Quartermaine on ABC's General Hospital on and off since 1993, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16. He was 84.

Long before Ingle pulled off one of the most successful recasts in soap history—assuming the role of Edward following the retirement of the late David Lewis—the former English and theatre teacher taught some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including: Nicolas Cage, Albert Brooks, Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Gleason, Barbara Hershey, Swoosie Kurtz, Stefanie Powers, David Schwimmer, Jonathan Silverman, and Julie Kavner.

In 2004, after being bumped to recurring status at GH, Ingle infamously jumped ship to NBC's Days of Our Lives where he played lusty lawyer Mickey Horton until 2006. He was replaced on GH by Days of Our Lives, Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Jed Allan, much to the dismay of Ingle's diehard fans, who christened the recast "Jedward" online.

In a bittersweet twist of irony, Ingle recently reprised the role of Edward Quartermaine for what turned out to be his last time. The beloved character faced death amid the fictional town of Port Charles having being poisoned by a mad man. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ingle's family, friends and co-workers.

I am in tears hearing this even though I could see it coming after last week. I thank Frank and Ron for giving him (and us) the chance to say goodbye and with such a beautifully written episode. We don't often get that. I have every faith they will give him a beautiful send-off as he deserves.

I pray he is with his wife and they can spend eternity together.

His wife passed away in Feb. His five daughters lost both their parents in a span of months.
Just heartbreaking.

What a gift that like Ruth Warrick and James Mitchell, his last on air appearance aired within the month of his passing. That is really touching. Gets me a little misty.

What also gets me misty is anticipating what Jane Elliot will do with this. To know there are only a handful more times for Tracy to say "Daddy" is upsetting.

I'm going to miss the twinkle in John Ingle's eye. He played Edward so deliciously cantankerous and yet so loving at the same time. I hate to hear that he's passed, and I'm certainly keeping his children in my prayers. Thank you, Mr. Ingle, for so many wonderful years as the head Q. You had an uphill battle replacing David Lewis and you won it!

Thanks also to RC and FV for respecting John Ingle enough to leave the door open for his return (unlike the previous regime's treatment of Anna Lee), and especially for his last episode, in which we got to hear him say "I love you, too" and to give Tracy a thumbs up.

Godspeed Mr. Ingle. I will miss your lovable curmudgeon, sly as a fox with a glint iin your eye. An actor's actor to the bone. I am sad but know that you are with your beloved Grace. My thanks to FV and RC for bringing Edward back to pass the torch via story and have his portrayer on screen to be the one to do so. "I love you Daddy." "I love you too." And so do we... Innocent

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of John Ingle. He was a joy to watch on screen for me as Edward Q. And from what many who knew him off screen has said, he sounded like a wonderful man in real life. John, I hope you are reunited with your beloved wife.

Very sad. RIP Mr. Ingle. I thought he did a great job as Edward Quartermine and its too bad he got sick. I kind of thought he would come back but I guess not. Its pretty tough replacing an iconic character but when David Lewis died, John Ingle came in and did a hell of a job.

Btw, did you know that John Ingle was on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210?I didnt know if people knew that.

Very sad news.

Edward's last scenes with Tracy, Monica, Patrick and Emma were heart-breaking.

It was a wonderfully heroic exit and showed the compassion of the Edward character.

RIP Mr Ingle. A fine man and outstanding actor. You will be missed.

God Bless you and Rest In Peace John Ingles! Will miss you so much as Edward on GH. Thank You Frank V. and Ron C. for giving him that last scene, a week ago, from his death. I cried and somehow knew, as probably John Ingles knew, it would be his last appearance on the show. You were a CLASS ACT!!!
