Young and Restless Showrunner Jill Farren Phelps: "I'm Not as Tough as People Think I Am"

The Young and the Restless showrunner Jill Farren Phelps is continuing her "I Come in Peace" press tour. Here's what the producer said in the Sept. 24 issue of Soap Opera Digest when asked about her reputation for being a taskmaster:
"I'm not as tough as people think I am. I'm just a hardworking woman who was extremely fortunate to have found this world of daytime fairly young in my life. I had many jobs in daytime before I ever executive-produced, and I have a real appreciation for the hard work everyone does to make a show like this. What we do is very difficult, so I think it's important to have a sense of humor. I think if you ask the people with whom I've worked, they'll tell you that I bring a sense of family to where I go."
In the same interview JFP had this to say on Genie Francis:
'I was the music director [at General Hospital] when Luke and Laura got married, so I've known Genie since she was a very young girl — and I was a very young girl. I think she's a wonderful actress and I'm very fond of her. There is no personal acrimony between us."
Well, I guess they can always keep in touch on Facebook, since they get on so well. (Snort!) For more of what JFP had to say about Y&R, pick up the Sept. 24 issue of SOD.

Good. Why don't you just leave right now?? Why is everyone else's opinion about Genie Francis crap but YOUR opinion of her is Gospel?
She obviously WASN'T a *fantastic addition* to Y&R because she SUCKED and they FIRED her. Sucks to be Genie Francis and any of her robotic fans that post on DC right about now.....

In the 1980s around the time of Jessie and Angie on AMC, Another World led the pack with African American cast. They started with the lovely and beloved character of Quinn Harding and built an entire group around her. They started with her adopting Thomasina and befriending Thomasina's aunt Lily (played by the delightfully funny Jackee Harry). Then gave her a love life! Bob Morgan. Unfortunately Bob was married Henrietta. When they broke up Henrietta eventually fell for Roy Bingham (Morgan Freeman) an architect. Lily Mason fell for a man named Carter Todd. Carter's son Grant fell for Thomasina and they got married and had a son. Quinn was involved with Dr Abel Marsh and twin brother Leo. Had it not been for the cast getting better Jobs (Morgan Freeman, Jackee Harry and Joe Morton all left for greener pastures) and a whirlwind of headwriters (and sometimes absolutley no head writer) and quite a few EPs during this time, the large cast of African Americans died down to just Quinn and some new characters Zack and Reuben. Eventually these characters where written out as well. By the early 90s the black characters that had been so strong, were gone. It was not until toward the end that a new family the Burrels was emerging. But it was too late. AW ended.

JFP is going to be cutting more names from the cast list over the next few months. I think Ronan, Tucker, Carmine, Kevin, Chloe, Jeff, and possibly Gloria will be shown their one-way ticket out of Genoa City real soon.
These cuts will be painful for many viewers.

@marknsprmo: Thanks for the history lesson. Always a Joy. Back then 'the level of acting' was much better in daytime and RKK was happy.

@RealityCheck 33 : Judith Chapam has been on recurring for many years now. In-fact she choose to go off contract.

Mark, I always learn something from each of your posts. I had always believed that Thomasina was Quinn's biological daughter. My excuse is that I was only about eleven or twelve years old when they were on the show.
Petronia Paley, who played Quinn Harding and went on to play Vivian Grant on Guiding Light, was spectacularly beautiful.

Not true. Chapman never asked to go to recurring/off contract. In fact, just before it happened she was on her Facebook Page asking viewers to *write in* on her behalf, asking them to say they want to see *more Gloria*, Probably because she saw the writing on the wall at that time.

Nooo, I want JFP to be tough.
We need a someone tough to convince Sony to bring back Jill Foster Abbott. It's not Y&R without Jill and Chancellors, it just not!

I feel bad for Y&R fans, they are getting their butts handed to them just like GH and their did for years! I knew as soon as news broke that JFP was in at Y&R that Genie Francis would be fired. Just hope that Sony cancels the soap before JFP ruins it like she did GH and many others!

First of all, can we get a better, more likable pic of this woman...it's making me dislike her even more. In all seriousness I DO have faith that CBS will watch her very closely and after any additional erosion of the ratings she'll be out the door quicker than that loon LML. I want to see the show on a better path with its writing.

We always talk about all the "newbies" of MAB but forget how she railroaded Y&R's true vets...Jill Ashley, killing off Ma Foster, Diane...all for Lily, Genura, Angelina, Angelo, Cane, HoHarmony, Sophia, Patty,...we could go on....you get the point.

Excellent memory! During that time I was living in a rather small, boring town. For about 18-months, I watched AW religiously for the most expansive s/l and cast featuring truly talented folks. AW was also the training ground for a very young Kyra Sedgewick, who ultimately starred as The Closer on TNT.

So far I highly approve of the cast firings by Jill Farren Phelps which were approved by CBS/Sony. I think Jill was bang on to cut Genie Francis, Debbie Morgan, Marcy Rylan, and Julia Pace Mitchell. This was done in the best interest of Y&R. These actresses may have talent. However they never fit in because of their differing acting styles that did not work on Y&R in my opinion. But more importantly it's because Abby, Harmony, Sofia, and Genevieve were abysmally written characters. These actresses and characters never caught on or clicked with the audience who watches Y&R. The vast majority of the fans wanted these actresses/characters gone. So they needed to be axed. Jill did the right thing. Jill needs to KEEP GOING. She needs to continue to trim the fat and rid Y&R of all of the useless characters. I can name so many more characters that NEED to be AXED as soon as possible. Heather, Carmine, Kyle, Eden, Fen, Tucker, Anita, Chelsea, Summer, Ronan, Cane, Chloe, Jeffrey, Gloria, and Kevin all need to go ASAP. Keep going Jill because you have more work to do!

JFP's line about being a very young girl at the same time Genie was is a crock. Genie was barely legal when Laura married Luke. I highly doubt GH would have hired a teenager or college kid to be their director of music.

James Reilly knew the value in telling colorblind stories just like Bill Bell and Agnes Nixon where people were written just as PEOPLE.
You say Bill Bell was color blind but he is the person who gave the Abbotts a black maid and named her Maimie! He also wrote the storyline about the Tyrone Jackson (played by Phil Morris) who wore white make up to pass as a white person.

It's no accident. JFP is known for this. Her "I come in peace tour" and "no acrimony between her a Genie Francis" couldn't be further from the truth. Her favorites are usually the men. All the women should be worried...especially if they're past a certain age, not "pretty" enough (in her opinion of course) or not thin enough.
SHE IS A SERIAL KILLER!

Genie Francis was all wrong in the character of Gen. I know she expressed that she wanted to play a stronger character but she just always seemed to over-act, and those over-the-top facial expressions? Not surprised Jill Phelps axed the character. What will happen to Tristian Rogers now? I can see him back on GH, he'd have more of a storyline on that show with Luke involved with Anna and being lied to that "Dodge" was his son. Genie eventually can be written back as Laura on the show, (for the 50th Anniversary! Hopefully the show will last past that but the soaps are in bad shape right now). Debbi Morgan was another one who never fit on the show, not surprised she's a goner. I hope Phelps can help the show but when she was on GH, besides the 'Big Production/Stunt shows", for The Emmy, she killed off beloved characters and had a few chosen actors who were on every day, with the same stories over and over and made the show so dark. Good Luck Y &R, youi'll need it!!!

I agree with your entire post Tori! Genie was fantastic and had chemistry with every actor that she had scenes with! She fit in very well, on this soap ,in my opinion! She is a great actress and I loved her ,as Genevieve, and it was nice seeing her play such a complex character. Genie was an asset , to this show, and it's too bad TPTB couldn't see it. When Genie leaves this viewer will too!

First off, for years, there has been the disappearing black story line. So that's always at the top of my list. I was not a fan of Bell, however, she didn't come in taking folk off the show. Does JFP think the fans won't notice how she has come in and really demolished the storylines! Changing faces at moments notice. The poor girl who was playing Summer Newman! Loved her, then on Monday, there's a new face. they had just aged her! WTH!
Y&Rs storyline has been suffering for a while. Kristoff St. John has been disappearing with no real storyline for a looooooong time, Chrystal Khalil, Bryce and now Debbie Morgan... is the former Jesse of AMC gone too! What the heebies are they doing. IMO, Y&R doesn't need new actors and actresses, they need new writers and they need African American, Hispanic, disabled, gay, and other diverse writers so that they can get some new storylines instead of repeating the same storyline over and over again. I noticed how JFP has only gotten rid of women since her hire... that sounds like some childish, catty, holding to some old grudges kinda mess. Get it together y&r staff!
