Young and Restless Showrunner Jill Farren Phelps: "I'm Not as Tough as People Think I Am"

The Young and the Restless showrunner Jill Farren Phelps is continuing her "I Come in Peace" press tour. Here's what the producer said in the Sept. 24 issue of Soap Opera Digest when asked about her reputation for being a taskmaster:

"I'm not as tough as people think I am. I'm just a hardworking woman who was extremely fortunate to have found this world of daytime fairly young in my life. I had many jobs in daytime before I ever executive-produced, and I have a real appreciation for the hard work everyone does to make a show like this. What we do is very difficult, so I think it's important to have a sense of humor. I think if you ask the people with whom I've worked, they'll tell you that I bring a sense of family to where I go."

In the same interview JFP had this to say on Genie Francis:

'I was the music director [at General Hospital] when Luke and Laura got married, so I've known Genie since she was a very young girl — and I was a very young girl. I think she's a wonderful actress and I'm very fond of her. There is no personal acrimony between us."

Well, I guess they can always keep in touch on Facebook, since they get on so well. (Snort!)  For more of what JFP had to say about Y&R, pick up the Sept. 24 issue of SOD.

JFP says it's not personal. It is business. And GF was bringing nothing to the show of Y&R. Soap gods know I love me some GF, but GenV was not a good character on this show. She served no purpose and gave no story to anyone. At least Harmony/DM did serve as a love interest for KSJ/Neil. GenV couldn't even do that. And beleive me they tried and tried again...from Victor (flop) to Jack (flop) to Tucker (double flop..even SN tunneling Stephan Cassadine didn't work).

Are there any male actors on the chopping block?

So far it's only the women that have been shown the door.

Yeah and I'll tell you... you chase fans away with your destructive ways! So who cares if you're all warm and fuzzy on set if NO ONE is watching!

@SoapArmageddon: I'm sure the men will come next. But all the women who have been let go over the last month so far are fine with me. I was not tied to having these actresses around for Y&R to make its one last ride. Plus, GF, DM and I can bet even MR come at a pretty penny. And Sony does not have that kind of money that Maria Bell was spending like she was gambling at a Vegas casino.

We know you're not tough - you're a puppet for Sony & CBS.

Unfortunately your achilles heel are MEN.

I've known dozens of people like this in my lifetime.

I expect the men to be next. SN, DW, MD/Carmine, That guy that plays ronan...., GR/Kevin, Kyle, etc.

I know one thing. If she gets rid of KSJ, I am done.

@Divatude58: he's not going. She said she had a romance coming up for KSJ. She likes the black people if they can act. CK and Miss Sofia are not on that list of those who can act....

Right!
Justus was killed off and Epiphany had a contract for a little while.
Maya lasted a little while too with Sweetie Pie Ethan. I miss that little guy.

She did bring Sean on which was good.

Why must you yell...I liked MR as Abby. WOuld have loved Abby even more if they had paired her with Devon like it seemed they were heading. But no, they backed off that for a pairing with this ramdom Carmine. It did nothing for Abby character or the story on the show.

I knew when she said that KSJ would do well in a hot romance, she wasn't talking about DM/Harmony. But I did think she would see the potential of a Tucker/Harmony pairing and a REAL feud between Tucker and Neil because Neil needs a rival like no other and Tucker is out of place in the Newman/NE and Abbot/Jabot wars. She might just recast Harmony with someone younger and hotter too.

@Cyberologist: Guiding Light years had a fully integrated black cast. Gilly, Hamp, David and Kate were front and center. And Monti Sharp who played David won a Best Leading Actor Emmy under her tenure. That is what we were referring to. As for ABC, none of their soaps were doing very well in diversity during most of the last decade. They had stints here and there that did not last. So we you can't put that all on JFP. Brian Frons was running that network.

GH did not have a core black family the way that Y&R does either..nor have they had a core mainstay black character that has been on 20 years consistantly. There is a subtle difference between the Wards and the Winters. And the Winters being a mainstay core "family" is one of the top reasons that Y&R has done so well with the AA demographic over the years. And NO other soap tried to copy the model...hence they are all cancelled are far below in overall ratings. This is my position on that subject.

THe problem with the other soaps and black characters is that they always have a revolving door. It doesn't give the viewers the time to love the characters they way they do the white characters. OLTL had a golden opportunity with the Evangeline Williamson character but chose to do with her what they do with all black female characters...not resign a contract. Getting rid of the core black family that has been on over 20 years would be the final nail in Y&Rs coffin.

@Jamey Giddens & Divatude58: We agree 100%. Y&R's ratings rose largely because of the entrance and expansion of the Winters/Barber clan in the early 90's.

Also Passions was the only other soap in the last decade to have African American core characters that were front and center.

When it came to OLTL, subsequent writers didn't do what they should have and made R.J. the central villain, fully invested in the Gannons and the fact that Evangeline only flourished when paired with a non-African American men was troublesome too. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

For GH, you are right as well. GH had not fully invested in African Americans for decades. They like most soaps had the revolving door and never allowed characters/actors to build tenure and history.

Gia was also played by a non-African American women. Fancy that! Melissa Ramirez was not black unless she was claiming the 1 drop rule.

Y&R on the other hand did invest in their African Americans as did the aforementioned Passions.

Days did off and on to some extent. Although we all know (especially Jamey Giddens) that Renee Jones being black was what kept her from being a leading lady most of her 20 year run on the show. Since she had proven in the one major storyline they gave her that she was not only a top tier talent, but could handle and carry the show. Make no bones about it if RJ has been a white woman with her talent Ally Sweeney would have been a supporting player.

She seems to be making the rounds and I hope DC gets a crack. Jamey needs to pull off his earrings, Jillian needs to break out the brass knuckles, Regan needs to fill up the sock with pennies, and Luke needs to rest his voice for the exasperated gasp.

I envision the interview staged like Luke's intervention on GH. As each DC'er asks a question the room goes dark except for JFP and the questioner and an image is played on a screen (Frankie Frame's murder, Laura Spencer drooling,...).

@david46208 & Divatude58 ...WELL SAID on both points. Y&R has been the most consistent with ongoing A-A family over the past 20 yrs. It goes back further because Bill always had lasting A-A actors front & center. As for the point of the other soaps, yes most soaps A-A families went through periods. GL had a golden period with Grants, Speakes families. HELL! all the P&G soaps had wonderful periods of strong A-A families. Wink

I didn't watch Passions but I always admired that they had the Russells.
James Reilly knew the value in telling colorblind stories just like Bill Bell and Agnes Nixon where people were written just as PEOPLE.

@Ryan-Scott & Harlee: It was the one thing I loved the most about Passions. Which is why I suffered through a lot of bad storylines. At least he was giving material to actors who most often would have never gotten a chance.

And yes Agnes and Bill knew how to write colorblind stories. If you had the talent they let it shine.

Sadly most soap didn't pick up the cue and I was too thru when they destroyed Jessica and Marshall on ATWT. Lammon Rucker had become the only actor since Shemar Moore to have that kind of screen presence that could have carried him on there for years. The actor himself was blindsided when he was fired. The numbers were good and Jarshall were polling high. Damn you Hogan Heifer!

Now I gotta share my favorite Renee Jones Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xe8cZ4Id6w

@ david46208 With respect to Evangeline Williamson. The character just kinda fell into that whole dating non-blacks thing. They wanted to use her to increase JOhn McBain's popularity and to prop Jolie. She stole the show and ruined that pairing forever. Then she fell into that romance-friendship with Todd because she was his lawyer and they were together all the time and TSJ wanted to be paied with REG so he played it up. Then Christian was another she fell into because it was kinda quad. BUt make no mistake, viewers loved her when she was paired with RJ. That pairing was popular too. TJS/RJ has stated on more than one occassion that TPTB at ABCD and OLTL were more comfortable with the Vega family who got story that was originally slated for the Gannons because the hispanics could assimilate into the white cast more easily. I digress though. We were talking about Y&R and why they had such high ratings. It would behoove TPTB to recast Harmony instead of bringing in a totally new character lest the revolving door of AA characters continues and more and more AA women are turned off by that. Of course RJ was held back by her skin color. Which is a shame really. If characters are never allowed to be lead nor written as complex characters then it is very hard for them to be popular. AA characters suffer from this on any and every show in daytime over the years.

@harlee490 Bill Bell Sr made VR/Dru a lead on Y&R. And when she is on, she constantly is in the forefront. She is about the closest that any AA female has ever come to being a true lead on a "traditional" veteran soap.

@david46208 Oh don't get me started on Thurgood Marshall Travers. I will never forget the day I saw his face on ATWT. I was sick at home with my head covered listening to the soaps. I tried to doze off after B&B because I didn't watch ATWT nor GL at the time. Well, I heard this deep voice and thought. "Hmmm. He sounds fine!". I uncovered my head and there he was. Oh, he was jus tpopping off the screen and his line delivery was a thing of beauty. I started taping the show that day and told every friend I had to do the same. I know I brought at least 20 people to that show in one day. LOL. I was so disgusted over that rape. But the crazy part was even then, he was still popular. No one even cared all that much cause he was a villain anyway. They did all they could to destroy that charatcter.

JFP can interview and say crap all day long, but most people who've invested in "her" shows end up very disappointed. I'm waiting to see what Josh does with the writing. Except for the AMC heavy cast of Y and R (and others) I personally was fine with the actors. If she destroys the look and feel of "my" show, I'll be spitting nails...(her way).

That's only your opinion,GenV was a fantastic addition to Y&R,she has great chemistry with Victor,Jack and Tucker. GF and SN characters have tons of back history that many fans including me wanted to know about. The writing has been poor but the character of GenV is one of the few multilayered, unpredicatable entertaining people on this show. SN never tunned Stefan Cassadine either(where do people come up with this stuff) Gen/Tuckers relationship was given to us very slowly and until Ashley left had only really come to light and never given a real chance. I started watching this show for Genie and Stephen and they have never dissapointed, the writing and lack of using characters properly by the people in charge are to blame and should be ashamed of themselves. Their many other non talented actors that are totally boring on this show and Genie/GenV isn't one of them. When she's gone myself and many others whom I know watch the show for her will be gone to!
