General Hospital Hits a 2.5 on Monday in New Timeslot!
By Jamey Giddens on September 11, 2012

Jumping timeslots hasn't hurt ABC Daytime's General Hospital. In fact, the sudser was up a whopping four-tenths of a point over its Monday household numbers for the most recent ratings cycle. According to TV Media Insights, GH hit an impressive 2.5/8 in households on Monday. Comparatively, GH averaged a 2.0 for the week of August 27-31.
Considering none of the vehicles ABC Daytime or ABC News have developed to replace soaps have done business anywhere near this impressive (As if, Good Afternoon America!), it's clear GH is the Mouse House's best bet as a longterm lead-in for Katie on ABC-owned and operated networks. Good job, Team GH!

That's great! I hope that GH can keep the numbers up or get them even higher.

Good for GH, I still can't believe they didn't make a bigger deal about it on Friday's episode just as one last reminder, but it all worked out. It's better than that Katie mess.

See what happens when they actually advertise! Spend the time on quality promos and the money to have them played repeatedly.

I don't believe this story is accurate. Bermann states that KC was up from its LEAD-IN (2.5/8) NOT GH. In fact, not every ABC station is airing KC. (Most are). Several NBC and CBS stations are airing it (like CBS STL, NBC NO, LV), etc. Let's wait and see. Hopefully GH will do well

DenverDean is correct. Katie's show airs at 9 am here in St. Louis on our CBS affiliate KMOV. Not sure about the ratings yet as it just premiered today, not yesterday like it should have.

I really do believe moving GH up in it's current timeslot will only help the show, especially if you're a marathon soap watcher and go from watching Y&R thru GH. Personally I feel this also has a great deal to do with current storyline and some Cartini magic (like they did when they were at OLTL and had NO promotion of that show from ABC...none). Surprise, Surprise; here's hoping the ratings keep going up.

The 2.5/8 was GH's household numbers for Monday. I have confirmed it with numerous sources—at the show—and Marc Berman himself...

GH probably did hit good ratings and I'm happy for them, but I hate to be the Debbie Downer here, but it's the truth.
According to the TV Media Insights article, Katie's lead-in got a 2.5. Remember, GH is NOT Katie's lead in on every station that airs Katie. Don't forget that she airs on NBC and CBS stations, too. When you see the "compared to lead-in", it averages the ratings for all the shows for the time period before her show airs on the stations that she airs on.
So, even though Katie's lead in for the most part is GH, it's NOT completely GH, there are some other syndicated shows (Ellen, Dr.Phil, Dr.Oz, etc.), and maybe network shows (for places where she airs on NBC or CBS, The Talk, Let's Make a Deal, or Days, etc.) that air before her in some places. That's why the article said "lead-in" instead of saying "General Hospital".

@J Bernard Jones or @Jamey Giddens, a question if you will, if GH is not on all stations at 2pm 1pm PT, what about the markets GH is still on at 3pm?!? Aren't the viewer numbers going to be skewed based on the varying times of day its on?!? Kind of like Katie, who's not even on some ABC stations?!? Or are the amount of stations not participating small enough for it not to matter?!? I'd hate to see some of GH's numbers not be counted correctly due to the varying time slots.

Were I live in Texas Anderson is coming on at 2 looks like our affiliate chose not to air Katie even though they showed promos for her.

DisillusionedGHfan I'm confused with this also but I remember GL was on at different times towards the end to. Some places it would air at 10:30 am were I lived it was 2pm.

Like I said here in Chicago in our affiliate WLS, GH is at 1pm, then Inside Edition at 2pm, then Jeopardy at 2:30pm, and then Katie at 3pm, the former three are staples in that station. Anybody know Katie's ratings here in Chicago?

I know this is probably too much to ask, but it is rather confusing since he doesn't mention GH in the article, and where I am in Dallas, Katie's lead in is Dr. Oz. I was honestly confused reading this article.

I think GH will do better at 2:00. I am saying most markets. It is a better slot for a drama. From 12:30 to 3:00 is the best times for dramas. This way they are lumped together. Being on later does not seem to help. Same as being on in the morning. Just sayin.......
Hope the writing/stories and writing keeps up the current quality.

In Houston, GH is on at 1pm, followed by Millionaire and then Inside Edition. GH goes up against Days of Our Lives. Not good programming for the soap lovers in Houston. Our local ABC news program (KTRK) has been throwing Katie down our throats with live conversations with her during the news and she has been here personally promoting her show. I can't help but wonder if they promoted the soaps as much as Katie, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Good for GH, especially when having a horrible lead-in like The Chew!!!
In the Washington DC area The Chew is on at 1pm, GH at 2pm, Anderson Live at 3pm and Katie at 4pm, in Oprah's old time slot. So GH is not Katie's lead-in here.

All that really matters to ABC is how GH did in the markets where Katie followed on its owned-and-operated affiliates, and she did well there (since the overnights include all of those stations), so as far as its impact on GH, this is great news!
This shows GH viewers were willing to follow the show to a new time, and apparently enough new or returning viewers thought it was interesting enough to check out at the new time. It's also possible that more than a few former OLTL viewers decided to check it out because they missed watching their show at in its old timeslot, and decided to see what some of their old characters were up to these days. There is no way this is not good news for GH!
Hopefully, this current storyline will propel the show into another blockbuster ratings-grabbing plot heading into November sweeps. They really need to build on this momentum! I'm very encouraged by this.
P.S. I enjoyed Katie, too.

I too am enjoying Katie thus far. I thought Jessica Simpson was an odd first guest choice, but the interview was classic Oprah. "Sisterfriend, lets get out here and talk about how hard it is for our waistlines to go up and down in front of the tabloids, due to the fact that we make bazillions of dollars as a trade off."

I thought Simpson was an odd choice, too, but I guess Katie was counting on all the speculation of what she would look like post-baby. I thought she looked pretty damn good, but my opinion of her has softened since the days when she insisted on singing everywhere she went. As long as I don't have to hear her try to be a singer, I'm okey-dokey with Little Miss Chicken of the Sea.
By the way, I'm about halfway through the podcast (I'll have to do the second half tomorrow), and I enjoyed everybody's thoughts on all of the new talk shows. I might even give Jeff Probst another chance because of it!

Maybe instead of getting wrapped up in the exceptions to the rule, we should just take the headline and be hopeful that the higher-ups accept these numbers and don't look too deeply. They have this way of picking and choosing stats and headlines to make decisions, like how they pick and choose certain ratings demos to call a show a "hit" or a "flop", without looking at ratings as a whole, or competently assessing folks who watch DVR or in group settings. They will also listen to small focus groups and assume their comments represent a huge audience, when we know very well there are as many opinions as there are fans. So I'll just take the headline and enjoy its implications.
And FTR, we have the more typical Chew/GH/Katie thing happening where I am, but I'd rather watch GH on Soapnet at night!

Jamey has the better inside track, but TV Gord answered this in a way that satisfies the other similar questions about this story:
A slightly less technical yet even simpler answer is this:
In the markets where Katie is on ABC-owned and operated stations & affiliates, GH did better aggregate numbers on Monday in its new time slot (whatever that time slot is in each individual market) than it did in its old network-wide time slot and was a great lead-in for Katie, as hoped.
In the markets where Katie is not on ABC owned and operated stations or airs in time slots where GH is not the main lead-in, Katie apparently did very well but is not tied at all to GH's performance.
Bottom line: In aggregate, Katie did the best debut of any talker in the last 10 years in SYNDICATION as whole regardless of station and, separately, GH is a direct and indirect beneficiary of the new scheduling on the ABC television network.

Here is another way to clear up confusion about what constitutes what is officially ABC daytime now and what is not:
The ABC NETWORK current daytime schedule OFFICIALLY begins with Good Morning America at 7AM EST and ends with GENERAL HOSPITAL at 2PM EST.
Starting at 3PM, stations ABC stations & affiliates are free to air local news or syndicated programs. Stations, especially affiliates, also have flexibility to air shows out the official order; in some cases this is where you might find GH at 1PM in some markets or stay at 3pm in others.
This is nothing new. In the early 80's, The Edge of Night was aired all over the map on ABC, although its official time slot was 3PM after GH. Guiding Light was moved all over the scheduling map on CBS' O&O in New York and in other markets; Passions also aired late night in many markets, daytime in others before moving to DirecTV.
Katie is SYNDICATED, regardless of whether it airs on an ABC station, but it is PRODUCED by the ABC/Disney syndication arm. It is not an ABC Network show.

Yea, but the people whose jobs it is to look at the numbers drill far, far more deeply into them than we ever will. They track minute by minute, commercial by commercial, remote control channel change by remote control channel change, demographic by demographic, every nugget of data that they can scrape. Of course "they have this way of picking and choosing stats to make decisions" because that's their job. Reading ratings numbers isn't a hard science, but it's not an arcane one, either. It's viewers, timeslot, daypart, competition, demographics, what's trending up, what's trending down, time of year, sweeps periods and what may affect a particular airing. That actually is how hits or flops are determined.

That is actually correct. In my fervor to try to clear things up, I muddle it a bit further. What a fuck up on my part! LOL
Therefore let me amend what I wrote earlier:
The OFFICIAL ORDER by which MOST CURRENT ABC network and affiliate programming is scheduled begins as follows:
GMA- 7am EST
Local News or Syndicated Programming - 9am-11am
THE VIEW - 11AM
Local News or Syndicated Programming - 12PM
THE CHEW - 1PM
GENERAL HOSPITAL -2PM
Local News or Syndicated Programming - 3PM
The other previously stated caveats and exceptions to this general lineup apply.
Are we good, Gord?
