Which show do you think was the Best Soap of the Week?
"General Hospital" was great this week. It started good with the return of Duke Lavery on Monday and as the week progressed I even started to fall in love with the virus storyline thanks to the tale of the Dead Man's Hand.
I really hope that they are keeping Jax on the show. I would hate to see him leave again. Ingo Rademacher's recent scenes with Laura Wright made me fall in love with Jax & Carly all over again. I know we are suppose to fall for Carly & Todd, but I want these two to just remain friends.
Even though I don't like all the storylines - Kristina's wedding & Joe's revenge plan - but I have to say that the show is balanced and it's an entertaining hour to watch every day. Can't say the same for the other three remaining soaps.
I am very unhappy with even the idea that Molly might have sex. Why can't a teenage girl have a sweet innocent relationship on a soap? I just know she will get pregnant. Will they change her name to Star?
While GH wins the fan poll here the actually ratings show different. Days is ahead of the game here!

Thank you david.I know I'm in the minority here, but I liked Days last week.Other posts say it is like they forgot the last year.Well, except for Will,I'm sorta glad they did.I wasn't around for the Nick years,so I will reserve judgement.Nothing about that storyline is turning me off.In fact,it was good to see Julie,Hope, and Maggie having conversations.
While I'm not invested in Daniel and Nicole,I enjoyed seeing Victor and Maggie go at it.
As for WilSon,it is going like most soap romances.Miscommunication and missed chances.I love Brian being in the middle(lol).
Future stories are being setup, and I like it.
I don't get last weeks ratings at ALL.
How can GH be down when the horrendous, horrific, horrifying show we used to know as B&B is up???
Not to mention Y&R, which has wonderful actors but terrible writing.
@marybee50: So far so good. As long as they keep things entertaining and move at a steady pace then we're good.
I believe the reason Y and R was up, is because a lot of people think the new people have already taken over and don't realize that MAB will be the writer until at least the 10000th episode that will be shown on September 27th, so they tune in and check it out, instead of waiting for the new people.
DAYS has been great lately, not as good as GH though.
This best of worst of poll has been so easy lately, best GH, worst BB.
Words cannot describe my dissapointment and how bad BB has been lately. I defended the show for 2 decades to people who slated it, now it really is a pile of crap.
I'm not the biggest fan of Cartini's style of production and writing, but it seems A LOT more people are enjoying GH. Why is this not translating into higher ratings? While I see how some could like what's going on, GH is coming off a bit too campy, cliche, and over the top for me. That being said, I do not hate what's going on. I mean, at least storylines are actually moving. GH was like watching wet paint dry toward the end of JFP's run and throughout Wolf's tenure. Being a longtime viewer I just know GH could still be so much more. Is that what the lapsed viewers are waiting for? Cartini has been in charge 7 months. While I appreciate the efforts it doesn't mean anything at the end of the day if they are not gonna generate ratings and keep the show on the air past the initial propping up of Katie. That's what they're supposed to be doing and we are still down from last year. If we were getting higher ratings under Wolf, which is sad, something is not resonating.
GH is on fire right now!
I like the use of old storylines to tie into current stories and make the entire canvas and Port Charles feel larger.
And the stories are making a difference to more than one character!!!
I'm not sure how GH can be any campier than years ago when they had a story about freezing the world, an alien named Casey, and a frozen Cassadine "popsicle" brought back to life!
I think the reason why GH ratings are going down is because OLTL character are more front and center than GH characters. Where was Dante this week? I can't stand the character but he should have been the one the mayor was asking to take control until Anna came back not John.
Sick of Todd and Johnny. I can see ppl tuning out because they have the same convo everyday.
I can't even watch Y&R until they fix it.
I also can't get into Molly and TJ having sex because we are barely invested in them. If they showed them more, made them the new Lucky/Liz or Georgie/Dillon, we could not mind it. But I don't want them to have sex if they are just going to be backburned again.
James E. Reilly Jr's aka Ron C.'s writing is either a hit or a miss with people. He is in the same vein of the actually JER. You either like it or you don't. When it is good it is good and when it is bad it is bad. Now how one determines that can vary. But the ratings show that what gets us chattering and jumping for joy here does not always translate to the silent majority.
On the other hand, maybe GH is learning the price you pay when you cross a Dimera!
That ratings report was for last week, not this current week. Days was probably sailing off its catastrophe storyline. That was not the case this week. Days was tame plotwise compared to GH. I think GH is campy these days but I thought it was during its prime also. Remember that when GH was pulling in record ratings, its storyline revolved around someone wanting to freeze the world!
I know I'm in the minority on this site but I've been enjoying Y&R a lot lately. Of course I'm not thrilled with every aspect of the show but I do think it's been on an up swing lately.
Ratings mean little to nothing to me because not every viewer is counted. There's no way that 1 householder or viewer can accurately represent 1,000,000 viewers. I've always felt this way.
Those ratings reflect last week's shows which were okay. I just finished watching all of this week's shows since school started again and had to rely on recordings. This week, and I can't believe I am saying it, were fantastic. Some odd backstory moves but at least they were interesting. Nice exit for Tony Geary's yearly vacation. At least he wasn't abandoning anyone but going off to do some good and amend his previous actions. None of that disappearing for no good reason.
They do need to find a replacement for Carly's little girl. GH used to be so good at picking excellent child actors and actresses. Lately it has been awful.
My only concern is that the writers, any of the writers, on GH have a problem with keeping up the momentum.
Yeah, well I still stand by my point that ratings reflect the majority. Sure they are somewhat "off" and a lot of people aren't counted...BUT, just because this site favors GH over the others doesn't mean the "world" does, and there's really no excuse for GH's ratings other than the fact that there are some people (like myself) that just can't get into the show. I've tried over and over, and I've been forcing myself to watch it, but I just don't like it! Didn't like it when Guza was writing, and I don't like it now that Lords Cartini are in charge.
Y&R is bad, but the "silent majority" as David said still continues to watch it, as well as B&B, and DAYS. GH was the only soap to go down that week in question, which kind of makes one wonder if the rest of the world shares the sentiments of most people on this site....I'm not hating...just saying...hehe
plus I enjoy being opposing when it comes to these things.
Touche, Stoney! I love being contrary as well
I really hate Y&R right now. Abhor it! But I'm still a Y&R snob, I think it's still better (at its personal worst - my opinion) then even the best of GH this year. I have not been able to stomach GH since Jason was de-Quartermained and AJ was no longer portrayed by Sean Kanan (meow!)
One thing I'll give Cartini credit for: two mostly unspoiled surprises! I think the realization that Robin was not dead and the return of Duke Lavery (any relation to AMC's Ryan Lavery, or just a coincidence? IDK, never cottoned to AMC) were nice surprises. Soaps need to go back to being more vague in their spoiling. I think fans are disillusioned much of the time because we know too much. We can go spoiler free, but it's not as easy to do so.
I just know one thing - I wish Y&R would surprise me. It's total predictability makes it mostly NOT entertaining.
I dont think this site favors GH. GH used to come in as worst soap of the week many times under Phelps/Wolf.
It may seem as though this site favors GH because we are blessed to have Perkie doing daily recaps (and thank you, Perkie!). If there were people willing to do recaps for the other shows, it may seem more balanced, but that's not a fault of the site.
Oh..I dont mind doing recaps for the other shows. So I dont think thats the point. Well, except my language barrier (as a Dutch soap lover).
This site is pro GH. GH was never voted as worst soap, at least not since I visit this site. It was always B&B, simply because it doesnt have a strong online fanbase. That is no problem (because B&B is probably the worst right now) but it had also some wonderfull moments, but never got the credit from the visitors of this site.
The people that run this site is a different story, they seem to care for the genre on its own, and yes, they have favourites, but thats not a problem. There is enough diversity.
@everyone: When Deidre and Drake were fired from Days in late 2009 fans online ranted that they were not going to tune in to Days minus who they saw as the show's primary characters. Some even suggested that Days was knocking on heavens door without them. But in fact after they left the show's ratings went up and up. Days even for a week took the #2 spot in total viewers. So it was obvious that the silent majority was not tied to having John and Marlena on their screens for Days to be Days.
It was simple that if one writes a good show or the viewers feel it is a good a show that they will tune in.
Now like Stoney I force myself to watch GH and B&B. For Y&R me no watch full eppy, just clips on Youtube.
GH has been 50% good for me and 50% bad. Though it tends to go up on the bad side to 70% rather than below 50%. Yet if people watch it and the ratings go up then good.
But the campy writing that I suffered through on Passions and that Days Redux from JER is the last time I could deal with it or not deal with it.
Right now I need more Nixon/Bell style soaps. That is what turns my soap juices on today. Not the latest cartoon villain coming to town to do some bad deeds again. Not baby swooping storylines. Been there and done those to death.
Soaps need to be contemporary. What is happening in the world today?
It is like these writers don't read newspapers like Agnes and Bill did in the mornings and would find their next great storyline on the front or back pages of the local and national news sections.
I'm not saying that the other stuff needs to never return, because it is a soap staple. But when it is back to back super villains littering your screen that is not a sign of a good soap. And when their "big act" has no real rhythm or reason to it.... That is not a sign of a good soap either.
Heather Webber.... Jerry Jax... Whose next Helena and then Ceaser Faison? Come on now! Come on!
I mean one of my sisters who is a die-hard GH fan now calls it General WTF! She has to read the spoilers before she'll tune in.
Exactly. I don't mean that Luke and the gang favor GH. I think I get misunderstood when I say things like that. If I felt that way, I just wouldn't visit the site. But no...I mean, GH has probably the largest fanbase on this site as opposed to the other shows. Thats what I meant. Its nothing against the DC crew..Just wanted to clarify. When B&B is good, they comment on it. When GH is good, they comment on it...when they are BAD, they comment on it.
BUT, what I mean is...just because most posters on this site seem to favor GH, doesn't mean that everyone favors GH and that there has to be some kind of "excuse" for it to be #4. Like I said, it's personally not my taste...but that doesn't mean others can't like it. Its weird because we all interact from day to day, but the online population doesn't reflect the viewers of these soaps completely. So while GH may be most popular here, that doesn't make it the best or the one with the most longevity. It just makes it the most popular online.
NOW PERSONALLY, I didn't vote for best soap...because they all pretty much sucked to me this week. LOL. How's that???
I never vote because I only watch one show. How can I judge?
Major Huge Gap
I agree bnt83, YR has been a lot better lately.
I have never watched GH but i voted for it
Yes, GH was surely campy during its ratings prime. I don't think anyone could argue against that. It was however NOT campy during its creative prime. Melodramatic YES. Campy no.
But what worked wonders in 1980 doesn't always translate to the modern viewer. Some of those very stories from GH's ratings heyday are reasons why soaps are a laughing stock today. And let's face it. GH numbers were due to two actors and their characters' romance. GH simply does not have that kind of super couple now. They barely have any couple worth watching. 80's GH had Luke and Laura. Robert and Holly. Frisco and Felicia. Now: we have Starr and Michael as the young couple on the scene.
Soaps needed to evolve. I can't help but think that there is a way to use history and to progress. Currently, GH is in a pattern of re-interpreting history for plot's sake along with regressing the show to it's 1970's view of story telling.
But in the end, this is a genre aimed at women viewers. And GH currently features 4 actors portraying rapists...and all of these rapists are currently romancing at least one woman! And yes, GH has a very poor history of handling rape and its aftermath that goes back much farther than this current regime. But I think choosing to revisit the rapist as romantic lead was a big mistake given today's current anti-women political environment.
The GH period to revisit was the mid-90's. Then again, I'm not sure there's a writer working in soaps today with the talent to pull that off.
Hopefully the time slot change will give GH a much needed bounce. Because i think the kind of story is going to stay the same or get even more campier as GH nears cancellation next year. We're going to get an homage to James Reilly but not Claire Labine. Some soap fans will be thrilled. But I doubt it's enough to save GH, then again, I don't think anything is.
