RUMOR REPORT: Is Steve Burton ThisClose to Walking Away From General Hospital?!

Don't shoot the blogger. Multiple sources are telling me that General Hospital leading man Steve Burton is thisclose to leaving the ABC sudser. Burton began playing the role of Alan Quartermaine's (Stuart Damon) illegitimate son Jason in 1991.

In 1995, a car accident caused by his half brother AJ (Sean Kanan) left Jason brain damaged. This led to the character all but cutting ties with the ritzy, dysfunctional Q's and embarking on a life of mob-fueled crime as the wildly popular hitman Jason Morgan.

"Steve and ABC have been negotiating for quite some time and it doesn't look like he's going to stay," says one mole. " It's also no secret he's been talking about taking his family and moving back to Tennessee."

Oh wow. I did not expect this news. What is with all these vets leaving soaps? I thought someone had mentioned he had re-signed with GH a few weeks ago? I love Steve Burton and the day he leaves along with as Tony Geary and Maurice Benard, GH to me will never be the same. Although it seems like most of DC does not care for Steve, he actually does has a very large fanbase.(Does anyone on DC like anyone???)I have noticed, his acting has been non-caring and very blase for a while. Maybe there are other things going on, or maybe he has not like his storyline. Not that I can blame him because it along with Sam's has royally sucked! I WANT STEVE TO STAY AT GH! I hope things can be worked out, however, I really think with as many years as SB has had in the business and his other ventures, he will do just fine. I will continue to support him no matter what. As I said before, if GH'ers start showing up at Y&R, I will not be suprised.

I am having conflicting thoughts here. I love Steve Burton. But Like GHTeenybopper said, Jason's character hasn't been enjoyable since he took back Sam. I've just recently re-watched those scenes where he threatened her and even if Jason found a way to be civil with sam, there is no way that much hate could be forgotten so easily. I mean it took him a long time to forgive Robin. And pairing him with sam again made his character pretty annoying and a bit douche-y. I would love for him to dump the mob life and revert to being a Q. That would at least give his character a little variation. I think he could be enjoyable again. He just seems to be stuck when it comes to his acting.

If he decides to leave, all we can do is wish him well and re-watch the scenes where he put more effort and emotion into his acting.

Steve has left before and is always welcomed back. I am a little surprised so many posters are excited by this. I like Steve and Jason but he hasnt been allowed to do much besides yakking and "rescuing". I cannot imagine that any actor would prefer day in and day out same old same old. I also do not believe that anyone believes that they have enough money to retire in this economy. He is a soap actor. He isn't johnny Depp. He may want to control terms like days off or vacations. He might be Playing hardball. It is his right. His leaving would make me sad. I fear he is the Quartermaine set to die in this viral outbreak. Ya all know they always feel the need to kill one. Anyway, I hope this isn't true. We need our vets.

I won't miss Jason if SB decides to leave the show. His performances don't seem like he is really putting any effort into them anyways, which bugs me. When there are so many good actors out of work, I hate watching someone who highly paid on a show look so often like he is just going through the motions and picking up his pay check. To me it shows a kind of disrespect for his audience. I don't care if he doesn't like his material at the moment. He's not paid to like his material, he's paid to act it.

I actually think there is a place for Jason on GH. He is a part of a larger family (if they would ever play that) and he does have friends and ex's. But I do find the timing of his potential departure bothersome. For years, the characters of Jason, Sonny and Carly were the center and clear stars of the show. For the first time since about a year after Jason Quartermaine became Jason Morgan (so what, fifteen years minus the year he left the show), Steve is actually having to be part of a true ensemble of actors. And it's only been a few months at that. IF that is what is driving his disenchantment and his need to leave - because he's lost his position while the 'love' is spread around to other characters, then, sorry - he needs to go. This show was brought to its KNEES because of the insane focus on those three characters, a focus that made this show lose it's moral center. This new team at the very least, is restoring balance and variety to the show. It's not the Corinthos-Morgan hour anymore and the ratings have shown the audiences approval. Say what you will about Maurice, but he has seemingly embraced the changes and is rolling with it, using the new balance to find freshness in Sonny. Wish Steve would do the same rather than head for the hills because he isn't top dog anymore.

I love jason and I hope Sbu stays even though hes been douche-y ever since he found out about the rape (and I never TOTALLY forgave him for leaving sam in her hospital bed) BUT if he is in fact leaving then I have only five words separated by one little comma - liason is love, VIVA MCBAM (lets give liz and jason the ending and the love story they have waited for so long and let jason ride off in to the sunset with lizard.)

OHEMGEE!! If he does walk then I sure hope his exit storyline is Robert & Anna & mercenary Mac!! teaming up to rid Port Charles of the mob once & for all!! And Jason being the 'Sonny protector' that he always is, decides to take the fall for Sonny so that he doesn't have to go to jail (Jason can escape custody so that he doesn't have to actually go to jail. That way when he comes back in 5 months, haha you know he will, they can have him come back working undercover with the FBI or something as a condition of his "release"). That way, Sonny is forced to go legit, b/c the Scorpios (& Devane!) don't play & will throw his greasy ass in jail friend of Robin or not!!

And if he is so board playing the same role, they should let him get that personality change we caught a glimpse of back during the writer's strike when Jason lost his memory & was horrified with the knowledge that he killed people for a living!!
I would write the story that after Sam & he get their baby back, Lucky comes home with Jake! (He & Robert worked together b/c they both found clues that their kids were indeed alive!). And Jason, having already lost Jake once wants to step up & be a dad to Jake as well, much to the chagrin of Sam, Lucky, & Liz. But this time he won't be a p*ssy-*ss bitch about it & man up & tell his family/the world that he is Jake's 'real' father. Then I would have him get hit on the head again & regain his Q memories, as well as retain the Morgan ones, so that the character can become a real boy again.

I think this is great news. SB has been phoning it in, long distance, for so long and the show and its characters, have been paying a hefty price.

I too used to be a big fan, but that started to erode when he came back after he left. And for the last few years, he's barely seemed interested in the show, even the scenes where he was supposed to "shine." He barely managed to not look bored during those scenes. I'd say he was worse than Tyler Christopher before he left. At least he sometimes attempted something.

SB really suffered "acting" against Maurice Bernard. MB does at least try but his habits are too ingrained. And, SB started copying them. When you copy bad habits all you get is bad as a result. Not much you can do but say goodbye.

I also think he was given too much power over his character's story lines (before the regime). There was so much potential with other stories, characters, but they were all squandered and all we got was more of the same (NO I am NOT talking about Liason, I was not a fan of that boring pairing, 2 dull characters rarely make good story).

I hope to hear about MB's departure next.

No! I need my Liason fix! Party

On a serious note, SBu has been phoning it in since the end of 2008 once the decision to pull the plug on Liason for JaSam. I, too, recently watched the "I will kill you" scenes and there is no doubt that trying to put Jason back with Sam was a dumb move on the part of TIIC.

Just because SBu is thinking about leaving GH, does NOT mean that Rebecca Herbst has to lose her job.

Good luck, Steve!

I like Steve but cant stand Jason. I used to love him his moments with Alice, Monica and Amber's Emily were wonderful but I just have gotten to a point were i'm so tired of him and its his choice to leave if he does want to go to Y&R then that's his choice. I'll still be watching GH maybe with the money they save from not having to pay his salary they can afford to at least recur some former vets.

I am sad however that another Q will be leaving the canvas if you can still consider him a Q.

I don't mind Jason being downplayed because at some point, every character should be on the backburner. Rotating characters and storylines keeps the show balanced. Just because he's in the background now doesn't mean he won't come back to the forefront later. If Steve can't understand that, then maybe he needs to go. I'd rather he stick it out, but if I won't cry if he doesn't. Then again, we could be misinterpreting his motives. Maybe he's just ready for a life change. If so, then I wish him well in his new endeavors.

GHfan-4now, I couldn’t agree more with your post. Part of what has hurt the show is Guza, Phelps, & Frons’ belief that a brain damage hitman was a hero and romantic lead. The character just isn’t very good anymore. It’s weird that all these other characters see him as a good guy and hero. His leading ladies have better chemistry with other actors now and ME & RH are better actors and with better characters. To top things off while SBu does put in some good scenes here and there ever thing else is just blinking and staring. He’s one of the top paid actors on the show! He should be putting out better material that with the amount of money he makes. GH can put the funds they spend on him to much better use. Why pay someone a million dollars to act complacent? He’s probably pissed off that he now has a boss that expects him to work for his earnings and who cares if the show stays on the air. He needs to go!

GHvetfan,,,,I love Liason and Liz, but there is no way in hell that Becky Herbst should leave a well paying job because of SBu, JJ, etc. Heck, I've seen comments from posters at other sites ticked off that Jason Thompson did not leave the show with KMc in order for Scrubs to have their happy ending. Jeez.

How would that make a happy ending? I don't get that. I wouldn't be happy knowing an actress with children was unemployed. Who would wish unemployment on anyone just because of a storyline or a debate they want to win. Like I said, sad.

There is too much demonization of Steve here. I seriously doubt he wanted to be acting in crappy storylines for the past few years. I doubt he loved Jason's box of pain. I doubt he loved reciting the same lines daily.

I would rather wait and get his story.

Steve probably wants to act and if he wants to leave for Y&R then Ill happily send him on his way. Like I said before nothing against the actor at all just the character and he wouldn't be unemployed if he went to Y&R.

As for Becky I like her with Ewan, heck I thought she had good chemistry with Patrick and Matt.

Like many people I suppose, when I hear that anyone with a good paying job is unhappy, I take a "don't let the door hit you..." attitude. I've also found that I really miss some of these actors after they leave (cases in point: Ingo Rademacher and Tyler Christopher). I know I'll miss Sbu if he goes.

But I'm also a little bitter about the last year, and I hate thinking in the back of my mind that Jason's s/ls sucked because Sbu's head really wasn't in the game either due to personal reasons or due to on-the-job conflicts. I'm also disappointed about all the stories that weren't told because Guza/Phelps/Sbu indulged one another, namely, Jason's reintegration to the Quartermain fold. THAT was the big loss for me, despite any romantic pairings.

Happy trails...I guess.

Oh please - it was a JOKE. Ive said many MANY times now that though I PERSONALLY wish Liz would take a long walk off a short pier, I recognize that would not be in the best interest of the show. I guess expecting people to have a sense of humor - again recognizing the number of times Ive said the opposite - would be asking too much. I find it interesting though that the people who are wishing burton, mo and monaco gone arent "haters" they are just I guess people who want whats best for gh????hmmm once again the double standard at liz webber confidential reigns supreme.

Please, oh please, let this be true. GO, CONSTIPASON, GO!

Have his head literally explode from the inside out, putting him in a coma. Send him tthe facility where Michael was for a couple of years.

Sam gets her baby back, still thinking it is Franco's.

After about two years, bring the CHARACTER back, as a totally different persona, not Jason Quartermaine nor Jason Morgan!

So I'm probably going to be shunned for saying this but...if Steve leaves GH, then I think they should recast Jason!

o.O

I know! *ducks from all the beer bottles being thrown*

Personally, I think Jason is an integral part of the show...but I don't think that Steve Burton has the acting chops anymore to be a Quartermaine. If he leaves, recast Jason and make the character get out of the mob business and back to Quartermaine business. If Robin was able to go to an excelerated med school, then so can't Jason!

We all know Jason's talented with a gun...just think of what he could do if he knew how to use a scapel!!
