One Life to Live alum Tika Sumpter is proving to be one of Hollywood's rising stars. Since leaving the ABC sudser, she's done impressive turns on primetime (Gossip Girl, The Game) and on the big screen (Think Like a Man). The beauty's latest project is a remake of the classic Sparkle.
One Life to Live alum Tika Sumpter is proving to be one of Hollywood's rising stars. Since leaving the ABC sudser, she's done impressive turns on primetime (Gossip Girl, The Game) and on the big screen (Think Like a Man). The beauty's latest project is a remake of the classic Sparkle.
Sparkle tells the story of three sisters, Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), Sister (Carmen Ejogo) and Delores (Sumpter), who rise to Supremes-esque fame, despite their mama's reservations. The movie marks the final onscreen performance of the late Whitney Houston, who appears as their disapproving mother, Emma. While I respect Perry's business sense and the fact he was able to build a film studio, I don't care for the vast majority of the movies he's made so far.
In my dream scenario, Perry would become a producer and align himself with the talented but marginalized directors and screenwriters (the way that a Brian Glazer has done with Ron Howard in Hollywood) and collaborate to green-light great films.
I must admit, I haven't yet fully read the article I posted on here but so far what I'm reading is that the Studio has interfered in the making of Sparkle, unfortunately.
The Salims stated that once Whitney's untimely death occurred, it seemed as though the Studio wanted a different film than the one they intended to make. This is unfortunate but all too common.
While in Grad school, the screenwriter/director who did the film about Frankie Lymon, 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love', I think it was..gave a lecture. The film with Halle Berry and Vivica Fox. She (the screenwriter/director) basically said the studio changed the pivotal focus of the film from what she originally conceived it to be and she still seemed quite bitter about it when she lectured my Curriculum class after all those years.
As I stated, I have yet to fully read the interview/article but I hope that the Salims were able to wrest control of the film from the Studio as it is usually not a good sign for the film's creative integrity when the studio takes over.
