Five Soap Opera Feuds That Spilled Over Into Real Life!

No. 2: Susan Lucci vs. Sarah Michelle Gellar, All My Children
It had to be a bit rough for All My Children legend Susan Lucci to see a sweet, young thing, critics we're calling the "new Erica Kane", strut onto her set in 1993. It was likely even more difficult for the still-Emmy-less-at-the-time Lucci when Sarah Michelle Gellar took home an Outstanding Younger Actress Daytime Emmy in 1995.
Gellar was without a doubt a revelation as Erica Kane's long-lost, badseed daughter Kendall Hart, but there was only room for one Queen Bee in the fictional 'burb of Pine Valley, Pennsylvania, and nobody could sting quite like Erica Kane!
Gellar left the series in 1995, amid rumblings that Lucci had her written off the show. She went on to star in one of the most popular, cult TV series ever, Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-03); while Lucci finally won the Daytime Emmy in 1999, after 18 failed nominations.
While neither superstar actress has ever given more than a few brief statements about the rumored iciness during their time together on AMC, it was pretty telling when Gellar returned for a series-ending cameo and didn't share any scenes with Lucci. Talk about a Mother/Daughter Non-Reunion!

@All This wasn't meant to be a comprehensive list. LOL There are literally dozens, I just picked five for a quick, easy piece of fun, Friday content. Feel free to list the other epid behind-the-scenes feuds in the comments!

Lang had a dumb blond moment; listening to fan on twitter, seriously?
Who can get along with an ego on two feet surname Victor?
Spitting, no matter where, to whom and when; just not acceptable. The oups at the end just not plausible.
The only way La lucci could ever win an Emmy, was out of pity.

@Jamey: Now I remember the EB and PB one as clear as day. Eric Braeden had went to the brass and complained that some actors were using cue cards and should be forced to learn all their lines. Peter Bergman caught wind of this and he and Eric had a falling out over it. I wonder if Peter was one of those actors using those cue cards? Never-the-less these two were acting like some 20 year old's fighting for the affection a college slut!

The Hunter/Kimberlin drama got REALLY NASTY.
It was very sad to me because they along with their spouses were such great friends.

I still think it's disgusting that Michelle Stafford never had to face any consequences. I guess if Victoria Rowell wouldn't be know to speak her mind and had more friends at Sony, MS would have been the one leaving the show. But then again, it's known that MS clashed with several of her female co-stars, while she's getting along very well with most of the men.
I never knew about Kimberlin Brown and Hunter Tylo. I have to say, I always thought B&B was a soap with a very familiarly atmosphere, but with all the stuff that came up over the last few months I have to wonder.
The one feud that comes to my mind is Susan Howard against Larry Hagman. Hagman was the one that suggested bringing Patrick Duffy back - and then the dream season was born. Howard was very outspoken how much she hated it. A few years back she pretty much also called Hagman out on his treatment of Donna Reed. Well and there is another one - Hagman against Donna Reed.

I thought about Guiding Light's Kim Zimmer (Reva) and Cynthia Watros (Annie). There is supposed to be a tape of Kim slapping Cynthia, or hitting her with a purse? It's been so long I forgot. Seems it was seen by everyone behind the scenes at CBS. Wish we could lol.
I forgot about Kimberlin Brown and Hunter Tylo. I remember reading how crazy that was.

David - I really think you have it wrong. I think Peter is the one who was and is anti-cue cards.
Eric I don't know about.

It's my recollection that their brawl began when they argued over who had the last line in a scene and it just snowballed from there.

I always thought there was some drama with Melody Thomas Scott & Brenda Dickson in the day. Brenda will always be a diva and so is Mel. However you know which diva is still on the show and which one got the boot. It seems those Bell Shows the drama behind the drama is even better vs what on our televisions.

Wow, does it seem like over the past DECADE most of the feuds have been on Bell Shows...or what?!
Judging by the mess on our screens over the past few years--I'd say the backstage histrionics/intrigue continues. Too bad, Y&R no longer has the stabilizing force of B. Bell Sr. to lay down the law (his ultimatum to Braeden and Bergman is what a person in charge is supposed to do). Now it seems like the runaway egos and off-screen conflicts (and terrible writing) have so imperiled the show that Sony had to bring in an enforcer (JFP). It would appear to have gotten that bad.

I am sure that there have been many fueds over the years.
Some that come to mind:
Another World had many back stage fueds.
1. Actor Hugh Marlow (costar All About Eve) played Jim Matthews had costar
Virginia Dwyer (Mary) fired.
2 Constance Ford (Ada) didn't cotton to the new Rachel (Victoria Wyndom) until Victoria put her foot down and said back off. She earned her
respect.
3 Apparently EVERYONE hated George Reinholt (Steve) except the audience and his costar Jacqueline Courtney(Alice). There were notes from the staff to please kill Steve off. Jacquie was only hated by the headwriter Lemay Harding for being a bad (soapoperish) actress. Both were fired from the show but went to OLTL.
4 Robert Kelker Kelly(Sam) probably used to the rough and tumble New York actors had a bit of trouble when he played Bo on Days. Apparently wanting to raise the level of acting on Days, he was tough on his costars. Both Kristian Alphonso (Hope) and Lisa Rinna didn't really want to learn to act apparently, wanted him GONE. 2 against one and Peter Reckel was in the wings ready to reprise the role he created.
Days of our Lives.
Kristian and Peter used to hate eachother when they were younger. They only spoke on set. Apparently however, all was well their second go around.
Daughter of headwriter Elizabeth Harrower, Susan Seaforth Hayes, always had a strained relationship with her mother. When Ms. Harrower was writing Days, she had Susan working so much she was near a breakdown. She was glad to see her mother replaced. She might have regretted complaining about the workload a few years later when she and husband Doug (Bill Hayes) were backburned in favor of Bo and Hope. The Hayes quit the show feeling hurt that they were not appreciated.
Santa Barbara. Can't forget this gem. The biggest fued on SB was behind the scenes with the shows creators Bridget and Jerome Dobson and NBC and New World entertainment whom the Dobsons sold the show to. The Dobsons were locked out of their offices and fired from the show a few years in. They sued and won. They came back later as head writers briefly as well as consultants for the show.
One of SBs all time favorite couples also had their troubles. It is said that Lane Davies actually quit the prized role of Mason because of his costar Julia (Nancy Lee Grahn). Too bad too because those two had major chemistry on screen (Nancy seems to have chemistry with a stick though).
Louise Sorell didn't have a fight so much as refused to allow her alter ego
Augusta to date her sister Julia's rapist. Which got her sacked. Which might have been a good thing but considering Augusta once killed/cooked/and served her daughter's pet carrier pidgeon for dinner one night because she was sending messages to a "Capwell" with the pidgeon, why would dating her sister's rapist bother her?

That one with Kimberlin Brown and Hunter Tylo was a real life soap opera.
They both lived in Vegas and commuted to tape B&B. Everyone got along and their husbands went into business together. Then Hunter had her affair and Kimberlin and her husband sided with Michael. In a custody hearing she even testified that Hunter was an unfit mother. It escalated and I believe Hunter claimed to need bodyguards at B&B.
I always sorta thought that maybe the Bells sided with Kimberlin in all of this because they were tired of the constant drama Hunter Tylo was bringing (the affair, the Aaron Spelling lawsuit, claiming demons took over her, etc). I always thought it was telling that it was KImberlin's character that shot Tylo's character by accident and killed her when Taylor was taken off of B&B. I got the same feeling many years later on ATWT. The cast was up in arms over the Austin Peck/Terri Columbino affair, especially Michael Park and Jack was the one who accidentally shot Brad.

@marknsprmo: They would hate me too at Days. Because I would want to "raise the level of acting!" I wanted to do that on Passions...hehe...
You gave some good feuding history.

After watching "E True Hollywood Stories" years ago, about the behind the scenes drama at Y&R with Brenda Dickson and her feud with the Bell clan, you figure she would be at number one.

The late Terry Lester couldn't stand Lauralee Bell. I hear he even left the show as a result of all the favoritism she was receiving, though he apparently apologized to her years later before he passed away.
And I also heard that Cynthia Watros and Kim Zimmer didn't like each other and that Kim was threatened by Cynthia's blossoming popularity, but when Cynthia won the Best Actress Emmy (deservedly so.......) in 1998, Kim was the FIRST one to give her a bear hug and even blew kisses to her from the audience. And Cynthia declared her love for her from the podium. So either those two ladies were just putting on the performance of a lifetime or they made up......
I have forgiven Michelle Stafford for spitting in my girl's face. Yes, she's an egomaniac who thinks she the best female actress on Y&R (she's not!!!), but I don't think she's a classless bitch like some think. I think motherhood may have mellowed her out. I would still love to see Victoria and Michelle reunited on Y&R. They had the best female rivalry chemistry on that show since Jess Walton and Jeanne Cooper. They were MAGIC together. And Michelle hasn't had that same level of organic onscreen chemistry with any other female on that show before or sense.

I want to know what went on behind the scenes at AMC between Finola Hughes and Susan Lucci because Finola skewered her in her "fictional" novel about life on a soap opera.
As for Lucci vs. Gellar, I'm inclined to give Lucci the benefit of the doubt because in 41 years, Gellar was the only person to be publicly involved in a backstage drama-fest with her. Syndey Penny later admitted, with some embarrassment, that during Gellar's time on the show, she, Gellar, Eva La Rue and Kelly Ripa had a bit of a 'Mean Girls' clique and went a bit overboard. Add to that, Gellar was reportedly not well liked by her castmates on "Buffy" either.
RE: Kimberlin Brown and Hunter Tylo. I've heard one rumor that Kimberlin thought Hunter bringing bodyguards to the set was absurd, so she hired a dwarf to follow her around as HER bodyguard.

I agree. Something about Sarah Michelle Gellar, up until recently, has always rubbed me the wrong way. She's a great actress, of course, but she's always seemed arrogant and full of herself. I have never seen any real charm in her. I do think that motherhood has mellowed her and turned her into a more likable person.

This wasn't all behind-the-scenes soap feuds, it was fictional soap feuds that spilled over into real life, i.e. their characters were feuding, then so did they. That's why Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso nor Bob Woods and Hillary B. Smith are on the list.

These do not count as "feuds" such as the kinds talked about in the piece, which are generally understood to be personal in nature.
The Dobsons and NBC/New World was a business dispute gone horribly wrong. (I remember it all too well).
Sorell's issues at SB fall under the heading "creative differences" but not "feuds."

Hunter Tylo is apparetly the biggest bitch in daytime.
She had indeed the biggest fight with KB
She also had huge problems with Dan Mcvicar (Clarke), Sean Kanan and after her reallife relationship with the guy thaert played Hector. That was a big problem, because their story was a big one with the Darla accident (BTW one of her best stories ev, too bad it fell flat with the most boring couple ever and that was Taylor and Thorne)

I actually think she is funny on twitter. Having so much hate for a soap actress is sad, life's too short to sweat the small stuff.

You've got it backwards, david42608. EB clearly relies on prompts to remember his lines as that damn Blackberry appears with him in almost every scene currently. But back then, PB commented on some "actors" not memorizing their lines and still needing cue cards after the practice was all but eliminated on the Y&R set. I believe he made this comment both to soap mags and on the set. EB went to PB's dressing room and they got into a fist fight. I've read the police were called but the top brass didn't want the authorities involved. I've also read what was reported here: that Bill Bell, Sr was prepared to fire both of them if they didn't get their shit together.
I'm still not really seeing all that much beef with KKL and HT. It's possible, but the tweets alone aren't grabbing me. It wouldn't surprise me if they aren't friends, though. Maybe there's some subtext I'm not aware of, but it's not as smoking as these other ones. Now HT and Kimberlin Brown - that was some drama! When HT and her ex Michael Tylo split up, KB and her husband, who were friends of the Tylos picked a side: Team Michael.I think KB testified for Michael Tylo in the custody hearing following the Tylo divorce. Apparently KB said some pretty damning things against HT in court. I've always wondered if the Sheila Carter character was killed on Y&R so that KB would never come back to B&B. Hmmm...

If I remember correctly, Jamey, Larry Flick, or someone mentioned that Eric Braeden actually head-butted Peter Bergman. When Peter won an Emmy that year, I definitely remember him specifically thanking Don Diamont (Brad Carlton) for “helping me through one of the worse moments of my life.” Peter and Don are supposedly close friends in real life and word has it that Don totally had his friend’s back during that whole incident.
