Rating, Rants and Raves: The Young and the Restless Ties All-Time Low in Women 18-49

Despite Maria Arena Bell's near-delusional Facebook rantings about how solid her ratings are, The Young and the Restless slid significantly the week of July 30. The CBS sudser dropped two-tenths of a point to tie its record low rating in the women 18-49 demo. (Source: Soap Opera Network)

Y&R shed 137,000 total viewers, fell one-tenth of a point in households and among W18-34. In story, Paul (Doug Davidson) learned Ricky (Peter Porte) hadn't murdered Tim (Aaron Lustig), which had the guilt-ridden private dick wondering if he'd misjudged the son he'd killed.

Ashley (Eileen Davidson) found out Jack (Peter Bergman) planned to be CEO of the merged Jabot and Beauty of Nature. Victor (Eric Braeden) told Kyle (Blake Hood) about his dad's pending nuptials with Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), the woman who smashed in his mama's head in a public park.

Abby (Marcy Rylan) wrote Kay (Jeanne Cooper) a big fat check, covering more than the money lost for the botched gala. Tim once again blackmailed Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and after being proposed to by Victor, Sharon (Sharon Case) headed off to Kansas to try to stop Adam (Michael Muhney) from marrying Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan).

Personally, I found Y&R fairly decent the week in question. Though I have to say, Sharon deciding to accept Victor's proposal—after seeing the amount she'd get from a divorce settlement—was poorly written and out of character. The same girl who refused to accept a handout from the Newmans, when Victor offered to pay for her mother's medical bills, is now an amoral, gold-digging, Paw Paw humping whore? MAB needed to have been fired on the basis of what she's done to the Sharon character alone.

The Bold and the Beautiful was up 41,000 total viewers for the week. B&B held steady in households, among W18-49 and W18-34.  Hope (Kimberly Matula) ripped into Liam (Scott Clifton) for lying about all the heavy petting he and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) did on Hope and Liam's Italian wedding day. For good measure, she also ripped up the papers she and Liam needed to have signed in order to be legally married in the states.

Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), Taylor (Hunter Tylo), Ridge (Ron Moss) and Bill (Don Diamont) spent the entire week discussing this latest hiccup in the Hope/Liam/Steffy triangle. What else is there to do after 40, than sit around talking about your flaky brats' love lives?

General Hospital lost a whopping 168,000 total viewers over the previous week. GH also fell one-tenth of a point in households. ABC's sole daytime soap did manage to go up one-tenth of a point among W18-34 and held steady among W18-49.

Johnny (Brandon Barash) informed Todd (Roger Howarth) that he knew about the baby switch. If Todd breaths a word about Johnny's culpability in Cole and Hope's deaths, Johnny will tell everyone that Sam McCall's (Kelly Monaco) baby is alive and well, being raised by Todd's ex-wife Tea Delgado (Florencia Lozano) in Pennsylvania.

A suspicious Sam tried to break into Todd's safe. Kate (Kelly Sullivan) told Sonny (Maurice Benard) she thought Joe Jr. (Richard Steinmetz) might know something about their baby. Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Shawn (Sean Blakemore) played stripped poker, while their dependents were on a date at Metro Court. Michael (Chad Duell) and Starr (Kristen Alderson) talked about the future. Trey (Erik Valdez) was apprehensive about his dad's plan to target Kristina (Lindsey Morgan). Maxie (Jen Lilley) and Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) faced off over Patrick's (Jason Thompson) addiction and Liz (Rebecca Herbst) almost caught Ewen (Nathin Butler) having a sinister cell phone convo.

GH has a slew of engaging, compelling stories going on at a quickened pace. You really can't even walk out of the room to get a soda when its on, or you'll miss something! I love this new aspect of the show, because that's how I feel about my fave primetime series. However, the serial could still use a bit of a tonal shift. Having two men, who despite their vile acts are perceived as romantic leads, discussing their respective ghastly behavior was a bit much.

While a baby switch isn't that big of a deal for Todd to have orchestrated—given his OLTL history—Johnny has always been portrayed as a reluctant mob heir. How can he ever come back from being responsible for the deaths of a teenager and a baby? This is one of those times when I wouldn't mind one bit if we learned Cole and Hope were being cared for in some cabin, by a kindly religious couple who look an awful lot like Roscoe Born and Barbara Garrick. See you next Ratings!

All I have to say to Y&R:
"My ratings are strong... each week stronger than last year. The show is in a great place creatively." - Maria Arena Bell

I could not agree more.

Ratings are plummeting because they continue to cater to the MASSIVE ego of Eric Braeden and write the show as if he is the STAR of the show. Every writing regime since BB has either been terrified of or in love with Braeden which is why he always gets what he wants. This needs to end. NOW.

Natalie blew a hole in Mitch Lawrence before the show went off the air late last year. Mitch is dead. Finally!

If RC decides to bring back a child from the dead, here's hoping that it's Jacob Martin Morgan before he resurrects Cole or Hope Thornhart. Guza had so many holes in killing off Jake that it would be easy to bring the little cutie pie back to his mother, father and brothers.

RC is fond of adding in flashbacks (Heather changing JaSam paternity test and Johnny finding out about the baby switch) why not a short scene with a young man with his back turned (Cole) calling Starr once she's banged Michael that he and Hope are alive and hiding out in fear that Cole would be sent back to prison. Starr realizes if she tells the truth that Cole/Hope are alive then she loses Cole to Llanview Prison for the next twenty years. What's a girl to do? I know there are GH fans that have not warmed up to Starr and it would be a good way to send the character off screen. Starr could always tell Johnny the truth in secrecy as he lets her out of her recording deal. Of course, Starr would probably show up pregnant with Michael's baby just as she reunites with Cole/Hope!

Y&R had a 2.9 rating on Thursday, the day of Victor and Sharon's wedding.

On Friday, it had a 2.8, the day of Nikki and Jack's wedding.

Thank goodness MAB is gone! Can not wait until Josh's stuff starts airing!

Watching the Hope/Liam/Steffy & texting PSA storylines of B&B, I have to conclude that Bell gave all the writers the week off, the script was accidentally shredded, and the maintenance men/receptionists wrote up a batch of replacements. Because they weren't soapy in the least.

With GH I am happy that so many people on this board seem excited about the show.. However I just can't get into it right now. The canvas is to full on characters I don't really care to see...

Why on earth is GH losing viewers and BB increasing? Madness.

I really don't see all the fuss about how "great" GH is now that it's become the Roger Howarth Show. Sorry, I'm still watching but I don't see the "improvement".

Y&R wasn't half bad that week....

Don't watch B&B and DOOL was pre-empted.

I find that GH is dark, camera angles are unusual, the dialog is poor and I'd like to see an increase in settings inside character's homes instead of just out and about.

I've just never been a huge Todd fan and he is in fact eating this show alive (for me) its like he's a standup comedian and now he's being morphed into the Robin storyline investigating Jerry Jacks so he'll be all up in this ...I'm hoping he just passes through so others can get some air.

What else are they giving Jason? He doesn't seem to have much going on other than repetitive dialog about his marriage ...

Y&R is like that half full glass. Things I like get offset with the dreadful Sharon marrying Victor travesty of a storyline. MAB really did a number on Sharon.

I use to like the Steffy-Liam-Hope triangle storyline, but they are playing it out way too long.

Like the pace on GH but other than Robin is alive cannot not think of any of the stories I really love. Poor Johnny seems to be getting the Sharon treatment on GH.

I'm hopeful that GH ratings will spike upward come Sept 10 when the show moves to it's new timeslot (OLTL's previous spot) and has a stronger lead-in than Good Afternoon America. Again I applaud the work Cartini has been doing for this show versus the trainwreck it was a year ago when Guza got bumped and Garin Wolf didn't know what to write other than the woman in white storyline and that Lisa "I'm on-a boat" Niles craziness (**shutters**).

I think the ratings had more to do with the Olympics than anything.

Y&R was horrible this week. Actually, it's not even about what it was, but what it wasn't. There wasn't one single storyline that was going right.

Going into this Nikki/Jack storyline I always wondered whether they would make it to the alter to have Jack dumped again or then Nikki would just end the engagement. I could not believe it when I realized they were actually going through with the wedding?? This is just horrid and WRONG writing at it's worst.

EB is the only actor I know, who can be gone for weeks and still be driving story. Everyone talks about him, looks for him, fights over him or schemes against him. It is ridiculous!

What was Victor doing at the end of today's show? Where was he? I'll tell you Sharon has become impossible. She has become so obnoxious lately. The only thing I can think of is that this new regime makes Sharon come to her senses and she has an awakening about everything.Marrying Adam, covering for Adam, marrying Adam again, going to Hawaii to clear Adam's name, running from the law, marrying Victor, her becoming obnoxious etc. This has to stop.

And then theres Phyllis. I mean yet again, its all about Phyllis, trying to make Avery feel guilty about leaving her sister again. Her "hold me" comment today to Nick was sickening.

couldn't the slightly lower ratings came from people watching the summer Olympics? Not that the writings for Y&R has been anything spectacular - God knows it has been awful for the last couple of years. Please watching the Olympics were more interesting than watching Y&R.

The writing of the character Sharon as being docile isn't new. In fact, I think she was always a little naive. I like the Sharon character and I have always wanted to her to be more smart and savvy. But sadly, that will never happens. I guess every writer for that show cannot see Sharon as anything other than a mattress.

What I would love to see on Y&R is some balance. I really rather watch Judge Judy than watch Phyllis and Victor every day. At least those people on Judge Judy have something interesting to say - not!

As for the B&B - I am really tired of Steffy/Liam/Hope crap. Where is Heather Tom and Don Diamont?

To me,the ratings are a little puzzling. If you say Y&R went down because
of the storylines(even though to me,it has been getting better),but GH went down because of the olympics, why did the worst soap go up in ratings?

Were people taking a half hour break from the olympics?I'm not suggesting anything. It just seems really weird B&B went up.Any thoughts out there?

I read the latest issue of SOAP OPERA DIGEST today and RB defended MAB to death, saying how the Bell family stood by her as she took a knife to Y&R.

I am surprisd that when Sharon lit up the pre nup, the whople ranch didn't go up in flames as she has been drinking a lot of alcohol lately!!

So if Victor fell off his horse and hit his head ( cue up the music dah dah dah dahhh ) how in the hell did he end up in LA?

Or he is running away from Miss STD?
