General Hospital: Perkie's Observations
Patrick’s dealing with Emma when Lulu stops by to see Maxie and to ask about the pills she found. Maxie asks for Lulu’s help. She reveals she confronted Patrick, who said the pill was aspirin, but she kept one. Patrick gets a call from the hospital and heads out. The two look online for clarification.
Sonny explains to Jason that he didn’t get a chance to kill Joe because John stopped him. He says Joe put the blame on John’s shoulders. Jason understands how that would make John blame himself, since it’s his fault the baby died. He says Sam can’t forgive him because he couldn’t accept the baby until it was too late. Sonny reassures him that Sam still needs him and will realize it. Jason doesn’t think so, because whatever was happening between Sam and John still is.
Jason says he’s a constant reminder of her lost baby and Sam will never get over that. He says he can’t look back anymore. He has to accept what he did and lost. Sonny says there’s still hope. He and Sam can find their way back.
Sam finds John hanging out on the docks and he tells her that Sonny didn’t kill Teresa, but took the fall. He blames himself, since he told his sister he could protect her and didn’t. He asks how Sam’s doing. She says some days are better than others and admits she’s working undercover on a case to keep busy. She’s complains about Heather and her obsession. Talk turns back to Jason. Sam can’t believe that her marriage has fallen apart. She leans her head on John’s shoulder.
Sam goes to stand up and leave, but John asks her to stay. They watch the fireworks together, while Sam gushes at how much she loves them. They lean in and kiss each other.
Michael and Starr are at the Q boathouse enjoying the Fourth of July festivities, eating, boating, getting dunked. They get closer during the day and when the fireworks start, they kiss.
Spinelli overhears Anna discussing Heather in her tape recorder and admits he’s investigating Heather as well, but that she caught him. He says Olivia hired him and explains about the night of the storm and the cop stopping Heather. Anna wonders if Heather’s “husband” could have been Anthony. She contacts the cop, who can’t make a positive ID. Anna wants to tie Heather to Anthony and wants Spin to take her to the spot where he confronted Heather.
Patrick comes home to find Maxie and Lulu checking something online. He is suspicious when they slam the laptop closed. The girls claim they were shoe shopping. When Patrick leaves the room, Lulu says the drug is an amphetamine used for ADHD and that Maxie needs to confront Patrick. Maxie’s worried that Patrick will get angry again, but Lulu warns her not to make excuses. When Patrick comes back, Lulu tells him they need to talk.
Heather brings Luke a picnic lunch, which he’s not interested in. She asks if he’s forgotten Anna as she told him to and if Anna has moved on. Luke points out that Anna is a good cop and will find him. Heather says she’ll solve that problem if it comes up. Heather brags about what she’s done to Sam while holding the DNA results. Luke wants to see what it is, but Heather doesn’t trust him yet. She asks that he prove his loyalty by writing Anna a letter to dump her.
When she reads the letter, she realizes Luke has written a coded message to Anna. So she regags him and takes off. Meanwhile, Spinelli and Anna are in the woods, looking for clues. Anna says it’s now an official investigation and Spin needs to bow out, even though he wants to help. The canine unit shows up and the dogs bark up a storm. Anna calls out asking what’s been found. Luke hears and tries to yell for help.

I would love RDA back in the role but I cant imagine that they would be able to get him for any length of time (if at all) which wouldnt make for much of a triangle if the guy in the center leaves. As for liz, my biggest gripe is that she is always the spoiler and I cant stand watching her fight yet another woman for some guy. They've done THAT particular Liz story so many times its been done to death (the only well they seem to have gone to more is the whole sonny whipping his gun out, threatening someone and then doing nothing more than shooting a wall - theres some stories they just need to STOP and the liz in a triangle and sonny with a gun are just two of them). I might actually be interested if the guy in the middle of the liz triangle is a father figure and given that liz and sam both have HUGE daddy issues THAT battle (for his attention) might actually be interesting. I would agree that ideally he would come back while RM's Heather is on the canvas.
That said if they are going to tell ALL of these stories that we want - a j/c/b/l/S/t sextet (or maybe instead of jax they move sean in to that sixth slot), alexis/jeff/anna triangle, lunacy reuniting etc. etc. they are going to have to curtail some of these stories that are in my eyes eating the show. The DID crap is such a retread that it needs to be put out of its misery. Wrap up the mob princess dreck and maybe let kristina get with johnny, backburner sonny and his enemy of the moment (unless his enemy is lo and he and todd come together while lo and john and anna maybe are on the other side of it) and speed up some of the slower moving stories so more happens in a shorter time frame (maybe not bold and the beautiful fast, but faster than what we've got now). I wouldnt mind seeing people coming and going if thats how they get all these characters in the mix without busting the budget. Im loving heather, but if she left for awhile with luke and didnt come back for a month or so I would be fine with that. If she took olivia, steve, ewan, and kate with her that wouldnt bother me either.
(and speaking of retreads, am I the only one who sees heather and luke and thinks margaret cochran and tsjs todd??)

I'm in agreement with bringing VI onto the canvas, just not as David Hayward. For me, that character went yuck around the time Krystal and Babe made their way into Pine Valley. I'd love for him to come on as a new character to be revealed to be Sam's dad. He definately looks like he could be Sam's father and I'm guessing he would have mad, mad chemistry with NLG! Give the woman a damn good storyline to sink her teeth into!!! I find Anna completely wasted on Luke, but a triangle with Alexis and VI's new character would be awesome.
I'd rather not have any more characters from other shows. Bring a FEW people on as a few new characters, preferably fleshed out more than ANY new character that's been brought onto GH in years. Wouldn't it be nice if we actually had some doctors on staff on a show that's called General Hospital???? No more soon-to-be evil mental patient wannabe doctors!
Todd and John's transition to GH went relatively smoothly. Starr's story sucked big time when she came on, and that was a story that shouldn't have crashed right smack dab in the middle of us all "grieving" for Robin, pushing Robins's "exit" storyline out of the way for the nonsense that was Starr and Cole round 2.... not a mere 5 seconds after she supposedly fell out of love with James and back into an unbelievable Luke and Laura comparison star-crossed love with Cole. Her story is finally getting bearable, even though she resembles Kung Fu Barbie so much that all I saw when her and Michael kissed the other day was him kissing his Aunt Courtney. It's like looking at a retread of Jason and Courtney and yuck did I hate that pairing with a passion.
OLTL did get their ending, whether people were happy with it or not. I sat there and watched it and bawled my eyes out that whole week (Vikki and Clint laying on the living room floor... omg I was a snivelling mess), but it was an ending. Yes, they could take a little time to wrap up the Victor/Todd story, and I want Sam to get her baby back from Tea, but if GH is going to end, I want a GH ending, no Allison Perkins hybrid mess that doesn't make sense to the GH masses.

Doodle yes LO - lorenzo. I think they could make lorenzo and tomas one and the same very easily. I guess Im just more invested in sonny vs. lorenzo/tomas because I care about lo than i could ever be in sonny vs. random mobster number 4732.
Mipeony we finally sort of disagree. I guess Im not ready to start thinking of GH in terms of ending when theres still a shot that it could survive and if bringing on the right actors/right characters gets us there Im not sure I care IF as I said it gives us story for our characters. If bringing on vi gets my beloved anna away from luke and tracy and it gives NLG's alexis story Im all for it. If bringing him on returns liz's father and heathers ex to the canvas while finally revealing who sams daddy might be - Im all for it. If bringing on blair gives me back lorenzo skye and jax Im all for it. If as part of the robins not dead story they wrap up tea and victor and give them a HEA, as long as it doesnt detract from the robin story, Im all for it. But yes, I would agree that it has to be a FEW (and I would add strategically chosen) actors/characters, I would agree they and their stories would have to be well fleshed out and that it cant crash in to the gh portions of the story the way cole and hope dying detracted from the story of robins "death". If at a point we KNOW for sure there is no future for gh then yes I would agree that it would be time to jettison some if not all of the add ons. You could have jeff (or the VI character) chose alexis and wrap up with robert and anna reuniting. Blair and todd could leave together for their HEA, lo could end up back with skye and carjax too could reunite (if they had sean in that sixth slot I wouldnt mind seeing jax come back at that point, put him back with carly and have sean run in to a returning keesha or lani exiting from her office or some other gh historical character implying that hes on to a new relationship. They could have michael go to elq and keep him with starr but have their relationship conclude largely off camera. And then you could either end with liason and mcbam or john goes home after sam and jason reunite and lucky can return to grovel for liz's forgiveness. Even if they did bring on say a Daniel Cosgrove type to play dillon you would only have at best three or four new characters all of which could wrap up largely with soft stories (they just phase out dillon 2.0 and end with him and michael working side by side at elq or he goes back to la or you have some cameo with ned returning and he says hes coming back to help dillon fight for elq and the end leaves you knowing that dillon and michael will battle for decades to come much like ned and aj once did.) All those endings could theoretically happen in short order allowing time to refocus on legacy characters. I guess I sort of think if we are going to have any shot of keeping the show on the air we have to find new viewers and encourage lapsed viewers to return. bringing on people that have built in audience that tends to follow them, rebuilding core families, telling good story and bringing back as many people as we can in a way that satisfies is the only way I can think to find that new audience while peaking the curiosity of long gone viewers.

I would love for Lorenzo Alcazar to come back. I would hope the writers would make him a true adversary to Sonny instead of making him Sonny's whipping boy - I hated what they did to him to make Sonny (always) come out on top. Blech.
I would want him back in all his Alcazar glory because a) He actually has the charisma to be a real challenge to Sonny. b) He's hot as heck and I would love to see them flesh out the character more. The work he did with Tamara Braun's Carly was hot. I love Skye but I don't really want them together. I'd like to see him work out some "daddy issues" with some of the ladies on the canvas. I know. I'm a sicko.

I really like Laura Wright but I'm not completely in love with her version of Carly. The dream for me would be Skye with Jax because she completely allowed herself to be vulnerable with him and that was a side I'd never seen with Skye. Carly (any other version than LW) with Lorenzo...OH MOMMA. I want Ned back, too. Alexis was her best with Ned...although, again, I'm a sicko who likes the chemistry between NLG and MB. He seems to not make himself look like a bumbling idiot when he's in scenes with her. So...there we go.
Let's mix it up. Is it wrong to want characters to be in stable relationships at least SOME of the time? Can we have the craziness come from the outside sometimes instead of EVERY s/l being about one relationship implosion after another?

I will say as a fan of Jason/Sam and John/Natalie, I liked the kiss between Sam and John. I will say its very unlike John McBain to kiss someone else. I mean hes kind of the conscience so to speak. He and Bo were the two guys that were the heroes or the good guys on OLTL. To have John kiss someone else is a little awkward. I was thinking that maybe John never fully forgave Natalie for sleeping with Brody and he got his revenge by kissing Sam. Yeah, its a reach but having John and Sam kiss, Im assuming that Natalie is on the way? Right? Unless they break up over the phone?
I mean some couples break up and get back together on soaps but I dont think Sam and Jason should. I mean I really dont remember any good scenes or moments with Sam/Jason. I mean I remember Sam getting shot and what with her and Franco. Anything else that was positive?
Starr and Micheal. I'll see where this goes. Although if I was Starr, I wouldnt rush to be with the guy who's father you accused of killing your boyfriend and your baby. Not only that, but then having being with the guy who's father is dating the person who caused the accident, I wouldnt run to spend Thanksgiving dinner with them yet.

There is a YT scene (2/12/10) of Natalie and John talking about their feelings for each other and they kiss just as Marty shows up. Another scene (3/8/2010)has John kissing Natalie at Llanfair while he's still in a relationship with Marty. John always has one woman on a string while looking for his next damsel in distress. It did not take John long to dump Natalie/Liam in 2011 and hook up with Kelly on the same night!

EricasEvilTwin, Daniel Cosgrove is too old to play Dillon (he's in his 40s), but since Y&R stupidly let Peter Porte go as Ricky, I say bring him on as Tracy's younger son. I'd like to see him return as a more layered character with sinister undertones, much like his mom, and see what happens between him and Lulu/Maxi. We already know Porte could pull it off.

It's funny. No one is calling Sam out for cheating on her husband or for "going after" a man that is in love with and in a relationship with another woman. I guess when Sam is the "spoiler" of a relationship it is a-okay.
Having said that, I like McBam. I have disliked Sam since her first scene on the show, but I can tolerate her with McBain. I am not saying this as a Liason fan. I am with another poster on this site who stated that she didn't want Liz and Jason back together right now. I want Jasam to be done and over with and Jason to be on his own for a bit first.
I still can't stand Starr, but I can tolerate her with Michael at times. I just don't like the actress.
Loved Anna in this episode. She was smart, beautiful, and interacted well with Spinelli. She became frustrated with him a couple of times, but never turned mean about it.

Hi TV Gord,
Many answers came to my mind while reading your interesting post.
First, I think that it is difficult to compare the situation of Anna coming to AMC several years ago or my beloved Skye moving from AMC to OLTL to GH and the OLTL characters coming to GH now. At the time, even if the audience was starting to seriously decrease, the cancellation of AMC or OLTL or GH was very tough to imagine as a real die hard threat to us soap fans as soaps had been part of our lives for so long already (at least for me as I am not as young as I was once LOL).
But here you have two soaps already cancelled which both got their special endings. One was a mess due to the Prospect Park project (AMC) but the other was pretty good and well done and respectful of the OLTL history I think. We all know GH is next. Luckily it will only be in September 2013 but I will bet anything that there is no chance that it will last more than that, especially with ratings which have been decreasing for the past six consecutive weeks. With that perspective in mind you can't prevent GH fans who were not watching OLTL to be angry that the GH ending will not be about GH characters only and that characters like Todd, McBain or Starr who were front and center of the OLTL ending will get a second round which will mathematically reduce the time granted to GH characters. That's just human.
I also have to react when you say that the OLTL characters are judged more harshly than any new character because it is not true. I would like to know which of GH new character in the past four years has been judged less "harshly"? Because since Johnny Z showed up, I don't see one. Except for Dante as long as he was Dominic (that is to say 6 months) and after he lied for Sonny he was done and got more than his share of hatred comments.
Another problem for Dante was that, as a newbie, he ended on top of episode counts for 16 consecutive months. It never happened before in any soap for a newbie or even for a regular lead character. Too much of a "new character" create an "overdose feeling" pretty quickly and can quickly antagonize the audience.
Since March, two out of the Top 5 ranks in GH episode counts have gone to OLTL characters (so "new characters" for a lot of fans) whether it has been Starr/McBain or Starr/Todd or McBain/Todd. Mc Bain and Todd have even been Number 1 each. Todd was number one in June and guess what? I bet he will be Number one in July too. This infuriates me. I can get bringing some OLTL characters as long as:
- they are not shoved down our throats
- it is not at the expense of GH characters being thrown under the bus in order to pimp the "newbies" (like with Johnny sacrificed to the Todd altar and written out of the blue totally OOC and who cares if it doesn't make sense).
I love my soap which has always be GH. I was watching AMC or OLTL from time to time but never got hooked up to the point that I would tape/DVR the episodes like I did for GH. I am ready to accept some changes if it would only give a chance to my soap to remain longer on my screen. But I want Ron and Frank to be CREATIVE and CONSISTENT with the GH history of the characters. I don't want to see lazy recycles to such a point that Carlivati is nicknamed Re-Ron everywhere. And why piss off GH fans by ruining Johnny or with the baby switch? The result is that some die hard GH fans are currently giving up because they don't recognize their show anymore. I know personnally at least 3 who said bye-bye in the past months and they had been watching for almost as long as me.
The idea was to bring new OLTL viewers to GH to INCREASE the ratings like Cartini did at the end of OLTL. The idea is NOT to lose GH fans at the same time! I know the task is huge but there must be a way to insure a balance somewhere so that the GH fans who never watched OLTL will still find the tone they liked on GH while the OLTL fans will stick up to GH. Right now it doesn't work or the ratings would not fall down week after week.
Last week I got Starr 3 days out of four and McBain and Todd two days out of four. But no Johnny at all. Alexis was on one day. Tracy was on one day and Patrick was on one day as well as Lulu. How is it fair to us GH viewers? There must be a better way to balance this show before we lose more GH viewers! I know that Ron and Frank have the required talent to do this. Just LISTEN a little bit more to the fans (here in DC most posters are adults who know how to behave and most posts are pretty interesting) and don't think AGENDA first because the quality of writing will always show it...

Thanks for the thoughtful response, nickskelton. I don't disagree with most of your points, and I understand the frustration GH fans feel. That's why I'm against more characters from other soaps coming over (especially Natalie; while I really like her, if a Buchanan made the switch, I don't think any of us could stand the endless speculation about the rest of the family and when they might make the switch, too!).
I don't think it's right to blame the transpLLANts for the lack of airtime for characters such as Alexis and Tracy. How much airtime were they getting before? About the same. Those characters, like it or not, have been relegated by TPTB to the backburner. (As for Johnny, it may have just been a vacation week for him.)
I can't say anything about GH fans who choose to stop watching, except I feel their pain. I was a committed AMC since 1979, and I quit watching when they killed Stuart Chandler. I only returned when the end was near. I understand the sentiments that make people quit watching, but with the likelihood--as you accurately point out--that GH only has another year or so left, it's a shame they're bailing now.

TV Gord, I am sorry to disagree about airtime (
) but when you see the huge cast of GH, getting all 3 OLTL actors in maximum the Top 7 (and 2 in the Top 5 with 2 Number One spot) of Episode Counts, that says a lot... I will agree that Tracy and Alexis were not given much more under Guza and Wolf (Alexis got more at the time of Ric and Jerry Jacks) but what about Liz? Patrick? Lulu (not that I am a fan of her when she is sharing her screen with Dante)? Maxie? They were barely (if not at all for Liz) on last week?
Sonny, Jason and Sonny are not on five days a week anymore so who do you think is getting the extra screentime freed from those former airhogs (as well as Dante's)? Again simple maths... But once again they did the same when Dante and NuKate showed up... Except that Kate was already a GH character and Dante paid a high price in terms of popularity for being an airhog.
As for being a shame for not watching anymore, I agree but I won't say it's a shame because I respect all those die hard fans pushed aside too much but I will say that it is really sad. Personnally I am hanging by a thread. I see characters on my screen that I don't like (Sonny, Todd, Jason, Sam, Starr, Michael...) all the time but my faves are either never on or ruined (to clean the place for the OLTL characters who need to be whitewashed). So if watching GH makes me more angry than happy, why am I still watching? Out of stupid loyalty? Or because after 25 years I am just addicted? If GH has become like a bad drug/habit, perhaps it is indeed time to stop watching and let it go. It will always be easier than if I have to say goodbye for good because of cancellation no?
Like many who have adopted the "Johnny's case" as a barometer and a way to determine if Cartini will disgust us for good or bring us back on the GH tracks for good, I am waiting. If they redeem Johnny and bring him back to his former self before the "Cartini touch", I will stick to the GH. If they keep making him the bad guy with Todd being Carly's savior, it will be my tip to go and say "I am done, this show is not for me anymore" and I believe it may be less painful than I have always thought it would be to say goodbye to GH. But once again this is sad to reach such a breaking point after more than 25 years of GH addiction.

I don't post as much as before because sadly I am losing slowly but surely my interest in GH but I like the fact that on DC you can express opinions and have real discussions with posters who have different views of the show (like TV Gord and me today) without entering a yelling contest like it happens very often on other boards

JS I think no one is saying Sam "went after" john because really she didnt. Lets say sam found out johnny bought the haunted star. We have never really seen sam hanging out at the HS so if suddenly she was finding excuses to drop by the club and suddenly she was bumping in to him outside his home or she needed her car fixed and she took it to his garage and was finding every excuse to see him like say leaving a scarf behind in his garage so she could come back and retrieve it later and THEN they kissed I would say she was dogging him. Over the life of this character we've seen sam at the docks frequently with spinelli, with jason, with maxie, by herself. She walks there when she wants to think - as evidenced by the fact that she was walking there the night she saved alexis from the TMK and she was walking there again when she herself was attacked. Her being there was extremely commonplace and running in to john was purely accidental. I dont think either of them have been planning that kiss - probably wanting that kiss subconsciously - but not angling for it. I also have to say, since you brought it up, Im not sure whether I think its so wrong - yes shes married, so I guess it is, but jason has been SUCH a douchebag that I think his actions have basically violated everything that a marriage vow is suppose to be. I havent watched todays epi, but I suspect that sam is going to enjoy the kiss but feel enormous guilt over it as well. I think thats appropriate - that she feels connected to john because he has been EVERYTHING Jason SHOULD have been but she SHOULD also feel guilty for doing something she shouldnt do. And since its in the promos - the kiss between Jason and Liz is wrong too - Liz for kissing a married man but Jason way more than Sam or john or liz being wrong because jason is doing something PURPOSEFULLY hurtfully really with no thought for either womans feelings. When he kisses Liz will he be willing to leave sam? Because given their history, its pretty much an asshat thing to do, to kiss her and stir up her old feelings potentially if in the end his heart is still really elsewhere. I have to say I am truly not liking jason these days.
Nickskelton - i can appreciate that you want the llanview crew to have less airtime, or really our vets to have more air time. Honestly the three I feel that really havent been on are JE, NLG and BBa. I give them a pass on JE a little because she has had some airtime and I think they did have story planned for her until JI got sick. Why NLG is not on more to me is baffling. Im not sure what the deal is with BBa but Im HOPING that his lack of airtime the last couple of weeks is because word got out that they were going to fire him and after seeing the backlash from fans, they changed their plans and are rewriting the story so that he stays.
