Get a Peek at Lifetime's New Steel Magnolias!

Lifetime has just released a preview of its upcoming, all-black remake of Robert Harling's Steel Magnolias. Queen Latifah serves as executive producer and stars as M'Lynn Eatenton (played by Sally Field in the 1989 adaptation), a Southern belle, whose fiery side is displayed when her strong-willed daughter, Shelby, faces a health crisis.

Condola Rashad plays Shelby, M'Lynn's diabetes-stricken daughter, a part made famous by Julia Roberts on the big screen. Rashad's mother, Phylicia, takes on the role of saucy, glam diva Clairee (Olympia Dukakis in the original film). Alfre Woodard inherits Shirley MacLaine's grouchy Ouiser. Singer/actress Jill Scott steps into Dolly Parton's shoes as hairdresser with a heart of gold, Truvy and Pariah's Adepero Oduye plays the innocent and insecure Annell, previously played by Daryl Hannah. I am looking forward to this adaptation of Steel Magnolias because I love most the actresses involved in the project (except QL). I do admit that I can't help but hear the voices of Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Shirley MacLaine. This should be interesting.

@Jamey - Can't remember your wishful casting for the movie, but isn't the actual cast pretty close? I think you might've cast Tika Sumpter in the role of Annell. She would have been my choice but Adepero Oduye was excellent in Pariah. I think the cast is very strong and well cast in the roles but Queen Latifah may not have the chops to portray M'Lynn. Her dramatic turns, aside from Cleo in Set It Off, have left much to be desired.

Queen Latifah and Jill Scott are too young for this. They Should have got Angela Bassett & Lorretta Devine! and those accents!!! ladies, ya'll needed to work harder on it, or change the setting to another State!

I will definitely watch this film because not only was this my FAVORITE go to GOOD CRY film but I loved Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton and Shirley Maclaine in it.
With this adaption, I love Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, adore Lorretta Devine and Alfre Woodward. But sadly the PREVIEW has no punch so it frieghtens me a little... plus that ONE CATHARTIC and HILARIOUS scene in the cemetery where Sally pronounces she could run a marathon but her daughter never could BROUGHT me to tears and then when Clairee screams HERE HIT OUISEE, THERE AIN'T NO ONE WHO HASN'T WANTED TO DO THAT brought out the heartiest of laughs in me IS DONE INDOORS in the salon.
I can't wait though. And it ain't TYLER PERRY presents or OPRAH. Finally, producers see the talents of beautiful black women!!!

From the scenes in the trailer it looks like it stays true to the script from the original film. So why remake it then? Unless you are going to improve upon it or take it in a totally different direction it seems odd to produce this version. Other than a Beyonce reference it still feels like the 1980s version.
I agree Latifah is miscast. She doesn't look old enough to play the mother of the Julia Robert's character. They look like sisters.

Hi All....I was really disappointed to see this because I had misread earlier reports and thought they were making this a series! URGH!!! I don't see a need for a movie remake, but will certainly watch as I love these ladies and of course just adore the original movie. I hope they've done it well. Hopefully it gets viewers and they make it a series.

The writer of the original play Steel Magnolias, Robert Harling, once saw it staged with an all African-American cast and was struck by how different it was. I can imagine with the prevalence of diabetes in the Black community, Shelby's plight might affect that portion of the audience drawn in by this re-staging differently. Hit closer to home, so to speak.
Something I will hold against the trailer is that it gives away too much of the plot. I understand that its a beloved film seen by many, but its too clearly in the tone of "you've seen this before so you know what happens", when it could have been much more powerful to play it straight as a new work and let the viewers do some of the work and leave some room for audience who is not so familiar.
