OUSTED Days of Our Lives Head Writing Team Takes Home Daytime Emmys!
A lot of people who lost their jobs following the past television season took home Daytime Emmy Awards tonight. Former General Hospital showrunner Jill Farren Phelps won for Outstanding Show; while Darrell Ray Thomas Jr. and Marlene McPherson, both of whom were fired as Days of Our Lives' head writers after just one season, took home the win for Outstanding Writing.
In the case of Phelps, I think it was high time for GH to have some new blood at the helm. Former One Life to Live executive producer Frank Valentini has breathed new life into the program. Plus, he's the most budget-conscious showrunner working in daytime. Phelps also landed herself a plum job producing Nick-at-Nite's splashy, primetime sudser Hollywood Heights. So it was pretty much a win-win for all concerned.
As for DAYS, while Thomas and McPherson had their hits and misses, there's no denying the pair took great strides to repair the years of damage inflicted on the series by Dena Higley. he duo wrote the best gay teen story since Bianca (Eden Riegel) came out on All My Children and brought back fan faves like Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn. Yet, for their efforts, they got kicked to the curb. Makes you wonder if Ken Corday is regretting his latest decision to "reboot" DAYS?
