SOAP BYTES: Deacon’s Back on The Bold and the Beautiful; Would Cassie Approve of Sharon and Victor on The Young and the Restless?

Y&R BYTES: The anniversary of Cassie’s death has always been a time for reflection on The Young and the Restless. Thursday’s episode was no different.  The seventh anniversary began with Victor (Eric Braeden) visiting Cassie’s (Camryn Grimes) grave. Of course Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) arrived shortly after and together they grieved the loss of their granddaughter.

Meanwhile, Nick (Joshua Morrow) spent some time talking to Cassie at the church, where Sharon (Sharon Case) found him. Later, Noah (Kevin Schmidt) sat by her grave and told his guardian angel he needed her advice.

The Newman family’s remembrance of Cassie made me pause to wonder how the character would have ended up if she were still alive. Would she be a Genoa City saint, or the town slut like Sharon?

When Sharon asked Victor if he thought Cassie would approve of them being together, the first thing I thought before he would respond was OH-HELL-NAW!

I did like the toast to Cassie. For one day we caught a glimpse of what Y&R might be if it’s writing wasn’t a mountainous pile of dung 29 out of every 30 days.

Daisy (Yvonne Zima) asked Daniel (Michael Graziadei) to share with her what happened on that terrible day long ago. When he wasn’t ready to share, Daisy became upset. When Kevin (Greg Rikaart) wouldn’t tell her, Daisy pulled out the “I’m your sister card.” I can’t believe the guilt trip worked on him!

Y&R:
I hate all the long soliloquies the soaps are so fond of at gravesides and hospital bedsides, so I FF’d through all of those. The rest of the show was OK, but since I just started watching this show on a regular basis in the last year, I wasn’t watching when Cassie died. I had no idea she was the “saint” of the show.

I hope TPTB will now move on to the business of getting rid of Daisy!

GH:
Something Heather said to Sam pretty much convinced me that the baby is actually Jason's...Heather said that Sam had "reaped what she had sowed" because she had broken her promise to Heather by not delivering Heather's letter to Steven when she had been locked up in Ferncliff.

Of course we all know that it would be impossible for a woman, who had been institutionalized for years, to know how to...or be able to...change DNA results, but hey, this is GH and nothing is impossible.

DOOL:
I’m a new viewer of this show and I have yet to see the appeal of Bo and Hope. I can’t stand their scenes together and end up FFing through them. Of course there are many other scenes I FF through, but Hope and Bo’s are an “always thing.”

I enjoyed this entire episode which is rarity now days. The Newmans set aside their differences to mourn the lost of a family member, it was a reminder as Luke stated how Y&R used to be and could be again. Did you see the longing glances between Nick & Sharon at the very end? Phyllis and her past deeds coming back to bite her in the proverbial butt, Cassie's death caused the affair with Phyllis when he turned to her, could it be having now the opposite effect this time around? I'm not a hater of SHICK it could actually redeem Sharon some because the outrage over "Father Time" & "Snow White" is moving at snail's pace, which surprises me coming from MAB. Both Bell soaps had me teary eyed this week and I love it! Smile I loved seeing Noah and talking to his sister was so tender and real... Sad(

I think if Cassie had been alive, a lot of this stuff never happened. Even if somehow Nick and Sharon broke up, Sharon might have striven to be a better example for her maturing daughter. Cassie, even as a very little girl seemed to always be able to put things in perspective for Sharon and Sharon (and surprisingly Nick) seemed to listen to her and engage her in conversation. Perhaps Cassie would've been the only one that Sharon would actually listen to.

Although before her death, I know Cassie was becoming slightly rebellious with the makeup and attitude (particularly directed toward Sharon) so maybe with the lousy writing that fans have been subjected to over that past 3 or so years may have trapped Cassie as well and she may very well have ended up treading the bustier and bordello strewn path 'laid' down by her Mom. In any case, Camryn Grimes was so talented, she probably would've left for greener pastures anyway and they might've just sent her off to college and off the GC campus. I personally think if this group of writers were at the wheel, Grimes and Cassie would've ended up off the GC landscape anyway. TPTB would've proved incapable of writing for her.

I'm glad that they continue to remember Cassie because how many kids are still ALIVE on this show and totally forgotten for years, like Ricky has been?

As for Sharon and Victor, his response that Cassie would want her mother to be happy was a total cop out. Of COURSE she'd want her to be happy, but that doesn't mean Cassie would want her mother to date her grandfather! As far as Noah's response, I can't help but wonder if they aren't going to do a gay storyline because of his "we can't help who we fall in love with" comment.

Enjoyed Y&R (no surprise there)

Loving that Deacon is back on B&B. Hopefully he won't be weak and dumb and pathetic like he was on Y&R. He was never that way on B&B.

Y&R - Victor is only with Sharon because he can't have Nikki and has the feeling he needs to prove something. Sharon is only with Victor because she desperately tries to get some stability in her life and somehow thinks she needs a man for it. With Adam and Nick out of the race, Victor was her choice. It's a sick relationship that Cassie would have never approved of. But IF Cassie would still be alive we wouldn't see the Sharon we see today. Cassie's death and Nick's affair with Phyllis was what broke her...

B&B - Fantastic to see that Deacon is back!!! I hope he stays.

GH - Something feels wrong. Funny scenes are good but some of this I can't take serious anymore. You can do fun without giving a soap fan the feeling that this style of daytime soap operas is what gets them canceled.

@Sallyv: I have never seen what made Bo and Hope so hot either. And i'm card carrying union dues paying Kristen Alfonso bad acting hater. Wink But Peter Ruckell is good as Bo. I actually preferred him with (and this is before your time watching) Megan. So that would take soap fans wayyyyy back to when I was a kid.

Nevertheless, Hope has generally been the damsel in distress who seems to have a job as a policewoman. Who is she protecting and serving? Before that she was a stay mom. Bo has kind of evolved into this father, lover and angry man always out to try and get Dimera. But his fault is that he always breaks the rules and laws when trying to get Stefano so he loses in the end. Basically he's a hothead when it comes to the Dimera's. Sometimes it feels like a soap cliche that has been satirized in films when they have scenes where the people are watching soaps on T.V.

So despite all my protestations Hope is there to stay with Bo. So she just has become my favorite "love to hate character..."

The Y and R episode reminded me so much of why I HATE LML. She killed this beautiful character and then before we got to get over that mistake she killed John Abbott!. This is why I hate the she ever picked up a pen and wrote for the show.

Next to GH's Luke & Laura, DAYS' Bo & Hope are the most iconic couples in daytime soap opera and with good reason. Bo & Hope are my all-time favorite couple in soaps. I've watched DAYS for nearly 30 years and Bo & Hope are an institution. I happen to think the chemistry between Kristian Alfonso and Peter Reckell has grown, but I admit to being biased Wink

@Luke: I am glad you found GH's version of "Weekend At Bernie's"to be hilarious but all I could see was two Daytime Emmy winning performers and one Primetime Daytime Emmy winner (forming a triad of the stronger actors in daytime) playing out some bull****! I am tired of Tracy Quartermaine being relegated to hijinks only. She's like Dorian Lord in the last few years of OLTL_ comic relief. Heather versus Sam was the highlight of the episode.

Every year when Y&R brings out this stand alone episode I am forced to wonder WHY IS IT SO darn long. Seriously, the actress who played the character is STILL ALIVE in real life so the idea of an anniversary episode is a bit OVER THE TOP. We don't get a STAND ALONE episode for John (and the actor is still alive) yet that character made a more lasting and more profound effect on the landscape of the show that he would deserve this type of remembrance.

Or for that matter, what about Brad? Or even Colleen? Or any of the other characters on the show who were killed off?

It always STOPS the action (well, lately, the action doesn't seem to be moving that fast to begin with) and it's so self contained that it just rings hollow. Plus, Cassie died NOT because she was drinking but because Daniel was drinking and she foolishly opted to drive because of a school girl crush. Any of the MADD or DWI connections were removed once it was revealed that Daniel was drunk in the back seat and that Cassie was driving when she didn't know how to.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that Cassie, John, occasionally Colleen but sadly not Brad at all, are remembered because that is what family do each year. But for the entire show to be based around this ONE supporting character who was a teenager when the character was killed off without too much of a social awareness message tied to it is too much. Sharon and Nick coming together to remember Cassie. Daniel remembering what an effect it had on his life back then. Noah, of course, remembering his sister. But to subtract all other stories from the show for this I am perplexed over the reasoning.

If Bill is able to come from California to Wisconsin ... and from CITY JAIL on the back of Deacon's jail house jumpsuit, Genoa City ... to get Deacon out of jail is a ridiculous plot twist. ESPECIALLY SINCE MICHAEL IS THE NEW D.A. OF GENOA CITY and the person that Deacon is in jail for is the DEAD DIANE JENKINS, Michael's very good friend!

Plus, Victor is a BILLIONAIRE who has not YET been able to win anything in that state with his money so it will be interesting to see how Deacon gets out and if, at all, it will be mentioned in GC/Y&R. So for Bill to come to town and get Deacon out, the rationale better be good especially with 2 BELL PRODUCTIONS involved in it.

The conversation with Steffy and Hope was nice until Steffy showed she is 2 faced by bad mouthing her to Ridge. Plus, why do both Bell productions INSIST on rewriting history?!!! Hope has been raised by her mother and KNOWS all too well what her SPERM DONOR daddy is all about (you can't tell me that Stephanie hasn't spilled those beans) so the ABANDONMENT issues she has over Deacon are ridiculous. She had Ridge, Eric and Nick as dads and that's better than ONE DEACON SHARPE.

The actress who plays STEFFY looks like she has had as much plastic surgery as the actress who plays TAYLOR. Sometimes it's a bit uncomfortable to watch her on screen.

I hope on Days they are leading up to a WHO SHOT STEFANO? murder mystery. I am of the camp that thinks it's time to put Stefano 6 feet under for at least 2 years until the Phoenix rises again.

I don't like to see EJ whining to Stefano to take him back, or even Lexie going to him as she is dying. YES YES YES, I know they are his kids (well one was) but it would seem more fitting for them to realize that he is evil and that they should stay away from him and to LET STEFANO constantly interfere in their lives. Not the other way around.

EJ crying to get his toys, I mean, money back from Stefano is dumb since the money is John's to begin with!

John looking at a gun in the town square was stupid. Cant they have him do it in his apartment instead of in the open?!

DOWN WITH STEFANO!

The Y&R episode was kind of boring. I'm kind of tired of hearing about Cassie. I know it is sad to lose a child, but geesh. At least Nick and Sharon did not have sex this time after talking about the deceased child. That crap was starting to get creepy.

Abby and carmine suck. Zero chemistry. Carmine's kind of blah.

OMG...someone please cut MG's hair. He looked awful!

Okay Bill get Deacon out of jail is so far fetched. I don't mind him coming back, but the writing for it is so ridiculous.

Would Y&R have the gall to 'Undead' Cassie? All this talk about her makes me thing the show might be bringing her back from the dead.

I too don't see the appeal of Bo and Hope anymore. They need better material to become interesting again as a couple. I love Peter Reckell though, he is great as Bo, and he still looks good!

Michael Graziadei has always had hair issues. Hey Daniel, The 90's Grunge called...it wants its hair back! He looks like a serial killer or a child molester!

The Lynn Marie Latham regime didn't kill Cassie - she was killed off by the previous regime before she took over as EP and Head Writer.

Regarding Y&R, this was that show's best ep in some time(yeah, I know, not saying a whole lot). I actually was crying on and off the entire episode; it was indeed a sad reminder of what a shell of it's former self the show has become.

@pgc722--I def think they're setting up a "Who Shot Stefano?" mystery; the folks who hate him the most--not that that's a short list--seem to really be pondering it more of late(John, Marlena, Bo, Hope, Abe, etc.). Sadly, I highly doubt TPTB are actually going to pull a permanent trigger on that character, no matter how much of an over-the-top cartoon he's become. Personally, I'd love to see a definitive end to that character(and he can take Sami's ass with him).

I'm sure Cassie never would have approved. But she would have gone along with it for Sharon's sake. Some ppl compare Sharon/Victor to Brooke/Eric on B&B. But unlike Brooke and Eric, Sharon and Victor have had a platonic father/daughter relationship for many years. It would almost be incestuous for these two to become a couple. SICK.
