Which show was the Best Soap of the Week?
"General Hospital"! There is much I like about the show. I love Robin Mattson's Heather and love me some crazy Connie Falconeri. I even warmed up to Carly's relationship with Johnny and like the chemistry between Sam and McBain. I applaud Ron for writing Luke Spencer the way he used to be before he was destroyed by Guza over the past decade.
Not all is great at "GH". I don't like Jason acting like an ass and Sonny like he is some good guy who can't do any harm. I hate the Maxie storyline and I'm so over the murder of Lisa Niles. Don't like that most of the female characters are still there to support the male characters instead of taking the lead themselves. Yeah there are the two crazy women ... but that's about it.
But at the end of the week, "GH" is still the best soap opera on the air right now. I hope that in the upcoming months the writing gets even better and that we have something to look forward to besides crazy women. Would LOVE to see a storyline for the Quartermaines and of course some good romance, while Sonny and Jason should take the back burner for some time.
none of the soaps were "best" this week.
maybe next week.
I love and hate the current GH at the same time if that's possible. I think part of my problem is that I was never a OLTL fan as much as I tried. While I have no problem with the actors coming over, GH has taken on an overall OLTL "feel" which is very different than the GH I've watched for 23 years. Maybe it's just going to take time to get used to and accept.
That being said, the change has brought a world of difference from the "watching wet paint dry" version of GH we were forced to endure under Garin Wolf's pen. Stories are now moving, cliffhangers come not only on Friday, but rather at the end of every commercial all throughout the week. The pace is good. Let's face it. Sonny's trial would have gone through July if Wolf were still writing. However, I still feel the soap is riddled with too many soap cliches.
While GH has remained steady in the ratings they have not seen a boost except once. I'm sure a lot has to do with Revolution looming around only a million viewers. It's human habit to try out the next thing if you liked the one before. That's why primetime slots after American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, NCIS are so coveted. However, it can't all be lead-in. It's time to examine the rest of what's going on if a spike hasn't happened by now. What is keeping fans tuned out? With ABC testing GMA this summer it's imperative GH get a grasp on what's ailing the ratings lead-in or not because they'll be gone if GMA does well.
I could probably go on for hours as to the reasons why I'm liking or not liking General Hospital. I do give "Cartini" tons of credit. I am actually being entertained by GH and still think it's the best soap overall and gets my vote (and I do check out all 4 soaps). Yet part of me still can't help but yearn for "LaRiche"
It's good to see that fans are embracing what's going on with the show. It's evident here on DC confidential with the way GH is being named best soap by fans week in and week out. But we all know this reprieve by ABC may not last long if those #s don't rise!
NOT Y&R. Don't watch the other 3, but I know which show it wasn't.
GH has become OLTL...the camerawork, the characters, the lighting, etc. You can slowly see Carly becoming Blair. Carly is NOT a heroine! Ugh...I dunno if I can take the new direction GH is going in.
That Johnny apartment bashing freakout was ridiculous! I know it's a soap, but come on, do people really trash their own homes when they are angry? And when I saw Connie destroy that cake, I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own brains...just so stupid!
I say Days was the best soap, because it was the LEAST stupid this week.
GH is becoming OLTL? It's too bad that GH does not have the ratings that OLTL managed to increase after the soap was cancelled. I'm enjoying OLTL..er, GH! We're still seeing a lot of the air hogs and I think it's because of their contract guarantees, which is unfortunate for the fans!
I know this web site is in ABC's hip pocket, but GH is pure crap. It doesn't really matter because the ratings for this shit storm aren't going to take off anytime soon. ABC killed its daytime line up and GH's days are numbered. Time to smell the roses.
OLTL's ratings also kept going back down. RC/FC never kept up a ratings gain.
As for best soap - I liked some of what I saw of DAYS, but I will pick B&B, by default, and because the stories are moving at a decent clip (Hope telling Liam the entire truth instead of stalling for months). Y&R is unwatchable and outside of the hilarity of mental illness, there is zero going on at GH. Recycled stories galore (Sonny acquitted, Franco, Lisa, stripper attacks), Anna continues to hang around zombies while ignoring her granddaughter, and the height of drama is John and Sam whispering and squinting.
So for me it was Days. It was the best of what we got remaining on-air this week. From the Kate getting kicked to the curb and running to her lover for help, EJ having a painful meltdown over the discovery that Stefano has been undermining him all along (which lead to the emotional confrontation), to Will coming out again and setting Crabby Gabi straight. It was good. I also liked Friday's cliff hanger when Ian announced and offered that Kate the co-CEO position at Mad World.
There were parts I did not like:
1. There is zero Chemistry between Jay Leno and Celeste son Cameron with Abby.
2. Don't care about the ISA crap.
3. Who cares if Carrie is pinning away for Rafe, a man she should have just started having feelings this month if we went by traditional soap standards. And sorry but Christie Clark is boring.
With that being said. The only other soap I let play is GH. Meaning it plays, but I seemed to never be drawn in to anything happening. So it just plays in the background while I am doing other things.
I know we are in tough times in the soap world. And would not want any to go off-air if we can keep them. But the Carviti team is showing that their gamble has not paid off.
I'm old-school and I will stand by those rules from Douglas Marland. I say they apply today and if Ron and Frank followed those rules then in the long run they would be on path to at least let the fans know that they gave it all they got.
This ain't no time to be thinking outside of the box when it comes writing and who is being played on the screen. Stick to the characters fans know and love, write traditional socially oriented stoylines, and give us some romance. Then when it comes to thinking outside of the box you do that when it comes to how many different ways you can market the soap and how many different platforms fans and potential viewers can access the show from.
And for the love of Agnes, be original!
DEAD! Died from laugh attack! Perfect description of the young man. He's just not my up of tea.
@soapbaby: I like the idea of having this Cameron on Days. But a quick recast would be to have Lawrence Saint-Victor (ex-Remy,Guiding Light) to assume the role. Because:
#1: He is eye-candy for the ladies and Days loves to have it's eye-candy.
#2: He can act and brings some flavor to the role.
#3: Just looking at soap history the brotha's with that Morris Chestnut type of appeal work better as characters on soaps then Elvin from The Cosby's. Lammon Rucker (ex-Marshall, ATWT/ex-Garrett AMC), Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm, Y&R) Keith Hamilton Cobb (ex-Damon, Y&R; ex-Noah AMC) and Don Swaby(ex-Chad, Passions) are just a few examples of brotha's that rally had that type of on-screen presence and flavor that translates to sex appeal and instant popularity.
Basically casting departments on soaps need to think LL Cool J meets Morris Chestnut when casting "black romantic leads" and they'll never get it wrong.
@Everyone: This just came to my mind about Ian on Days. He has done swooped in and became Kate's "Captain Save A Hoe!"
I WANNA BE SAVED!
I want to know when Brad Bell is going to get the ass kissing Valentini and Carlivati get endlessly. B&B is not perfect but the show never treads from its bread and butter and if I hear one more time how groundbreaking RC is for his campy nonsense, Brad Bell had been telling these kind of stories for 25 years. B&B is the only soap that had gained and is building around a 20 something set of characters. And they have about the strongest younger cast and still seasoned vets around. They also magically still have money so that the show looks good and they can still do location shoots and don't have floor scrubbers left on the set by the crew accidentally appearing in scenes they can't reshoot.
David, Lord knows I'm all for having a fine bit of chocolate brotherhood on my TV screen. But the whole idea of Cameron makes no sense to me. Celeste is not back for long and Lexie, sadly, isn't long for this world.
I don't remember this, but a poster on another board mentioned that after it was revealed back in the 90s that Lexie is Celeste's daughter, it was
also clearly stated that Celeste couldn't and didn't have any more children.
@soaparageddon: Yes that was true. You know how soaps mess with history. And this was one of those cases. But that kid looks nothing like the old or new Celeste. My thoughts are when they were casting Cameron they were not thinking of or caring about the black audience. If they kept that in mind then they could have cast someone who would have that universal appeal.
I completely agree with you. I have not watched GH too long, but I fell in love with it under Guza's pen and Jill Farren Phelps production.. and while many complain about them, THAT is the GH I fell in love with. THIS GH feels completely different. The whole tone is different. The background music is really inconsistant, and I have big issues with GH when the bgm is over the top or not right. That is a big part in the change in overall tone for ME I think. But, I do like the pace better and while I hate cliche'd storylines, somehow the Connie/Kate story is working for me,(I think because of Kelly Sullivan)... I really feel like FV and RC need to go back and watch old GH and really pay attention to the HEART and NUANCE and complexity and depth it had... and to the overall feel of the show.... I could go on and on too lol.. they definately need to pay more attention to how they write the characters. For example, I just can't see Maxie treating Spinelli with such little regard all of a sudden. And would Micheal REALLY have walked out of the courtroom the other day with Star, not even going over to his dad..??
This was in reply to MissingOldGH.. for some reason it did not go as a reply (I am new to this board)
