EXCLUSIVE: Days of Our Lives' Darin Brooks to Appear in Bad Girls Pilot For NBC!
By Jamey Giddens on March 14, 2012

Another daytime soap alum has booked a gig in a high profile pilot. Former Days of Our Lives' hottie Darin Brooks (ex-Max) will appear in the pilot episode of John Wells Productions' adaptation of the U.K. hit Bad Girls for NBC, according to sources.
The Daytime Emmy winner, who was last seen in Spike TV's Blue Mountain State, will play the role of Benny in the pilot of the women-in-prison sudser. Nancy Pimental, who works as a writer/producer on JWP's cable dramedy Shameless, is writing the pilot for Bad Girls. John Wells and Andrew Stearn will serve as executive producers. Congrats, Darin!

I know these two have a relationship w/NBC b/c of "ER", "The West Wing" and their collaboration on "Southland", but didn't they learn w/the latter that a kind of material like this will only work on cable? I wish that they would've tried getting this on at least Showtime or HBO (that network is in drama shambles since they canceled "Luck" and passed on the Doug Elin, Spike Lee, and Mike Tyson boxing drama that sound promising).
In addition to Darin, Amy Smart (who did a surprising job on "Shameless"), my girl Jurnee Smolett, and Tracee Ellis Ross have been cast. All of this makes me even sadder when this either doesn't get pick up or only makes it to episode 4.

EastWest,
NBC's new head is the former top programmer of Showtime. He's trying to de-homogenize NBC's programming, which has failed miserably this past decade with rare exception. The question will be how good the pilot is. Most pilots fail.
Southland is a great show. It's one of my favorite programs. I love this season. Regina King is such a great lead. I love the shows diversity: 2 black leading detectives, an Asian woman, a gay white male and two straight white guys. What other show on TV has this kind of casting?
Did I mention that I love Regina King? It's so great to see a woman of color in this kind of atypical role.

Was Regina King in a fantastic show in the 90's called "I'll Fly Away"? The woman in that was a wonderful actress and this name rings a bell.

@Josstheguy you do bring up an excellent point w/the new head of NBC coming from cable and the show he invested in, "Smash", is paying off in some way. But I still feel that this show should've been on cable.
@richalan67 you are speaking of Regina Taylor who was on that show, but yes what I have seen of Regina King on "Southland", she is beyond amazing. This is the kind of role that more writers should be aspiring for black actresses.

@EastWest & josstheguy: The problem is network television is a tough nut to crack for series that don't follow a simple format and network television does not give these types of series too much room for growth. If it does not pick up enough ratings by the 4th episode NBC is more than likely to cut it off. Yet on cable it would be given time (at least a season w/ repeats) to build an audience. So the worry is not about diversity. But more so about if the series premise is one that once it airs viewers will be able to sink their teeth in to in numbers that will satisfy NBC and its advertisers.
So while Southland is a good series, it failed to bring in the numbers from a network standpoint, yet was a hit on cable where the margins are different. And so there is plenty of room to be apprehensive about how the series would do.
On another note Tracee Ellis Ross deserves her own drama series. She was good on Girlfriends. I believe she has the potential to play a super-bitch and that has not been tapped into yet. Here she is on the cover of the latest Uptown Magazine (for you Buppies out there like me) http://bit.ly/weDzd0
