Darnell Williams on Y&R’s Sarge: “He's an A—Hole”

TV Guide’s Michael Logan caught up with former All My Children star Darnell Williams and talked to him about his upcoming role on The Young and the Restless as Sarge.  In the interview, they also chat about Prospect Park’s plan to take AMC to the web falling through, whether lightening will strike twice for him and Debbi Morgan and what we can expect from Sarge.

TV Guide Magazine: You've gone from playing cool cop in Pine Valley to hot-head screamer in Genoa City. What's eating Sarge?

Williams: He's like an ex-Marine drill sergeant who bullies his patients into getting better.  We'll be chipping away the layers to find out why. There's something pretty big lurking beneath the surface, though I don't yet know what that is. [Laughs] I don't even know Sarge's real name but I do know he's an a--hole.

Uh, wow. You guys will have to keep me abreast of this one since I no longer tune in because so far this character doesn't sound like one that a person wants to root for (these types seem to have fallen out of fashion on Y&R these days).

Y&R has not seen many emotionally-healthy/likable characters on their show for a great many years now--sheesh!

Leroy Washington. Hilarious. If he has a relationship with Phyllis, I hope he doesn't call her "Miss Phyllis".

First, my disclaimer of repeating (becuase of what's to follow)is to reiterate my love for Y&R. Through the good and bad, I stand by the only Daytime Soap I watch....

BUT....

We have seen that Plethora of ABC castoff's in GC. Of the main 4 (well, 3, as we haven't seen Darnell yet) Genie's character I have NOT warmed up too. A smidge now that she's not with My Jack, but I swear, she jumps in the sack with Victor, I'll just die. Angie Hubbard. Dear Lord. I can't even get into it. I will find a bright side, and that I HAVE found interest in Devon these days. Probably b/c of his connection to his Grandmother, not his Parental Leniage.

As much as I despise her character, Melissa Clair Egan continues to impress me. That said, I can't help but wonder how long the actress is sticking around? I assume the writers want to give Victoria not only her baby, but her happily ever after. I envision MCE gone when her character is murdered...talent be damned. I say that because Tristen Rogers was fantasic (storyline aside)and look how that panned out.

Detective Clueless I didn't count in the equation because, as a viewer I have no idea really what his role has been. No, really. Is he there just for the crime? To screw Phyllis? Flush him out by FINALLY TALKING TO HIS MOTHER. That dynamic is just weird.

Is Sarge a DR, or did I read that wrong? I shall assume he'll be working on getting Jack walking again. That's fine. Someone has too, may as well see what Darnell can do for us. And Jack.

I like the hook - up with Phyllis idea too. But, it wouldnt last long. She'll run back to Nick.

THIN THE HERD! Avery, Ricky, Eden, Angelina and her Dufus Father (PLEASE!)have GOT TO GO! No offense to Jessica Collins, but if we get rid of Avery, there's a good chance we WONT ever see horse face Daisy again. My big fear is she's ever on again for an extended amount of time, I WILL give up on my show. Eden isn't needed as her 'family' has become bizarre- Michael is now a Girl Friday for Victor and Kevin is there to further embarrass Italian Americans like myself, something I THOUGHT Jersey Shore took care of, but I guess I was wrong.

Wow. After re-reading, I'm impressed I HAVEN'T given up!

I had to go here. A certain Sistah (CK) on that show who has been there for years would not have helped a brotha or a sistah out with getting work or more airtime. But Debbie didn't hesitate to help one out. And that's what i'm talking about. Proof is staring you right in the face.

@david46208 - I generally agree with you, particularly on the state of Blacks on soaps. You seem very knowledgeable and a good judge of things. I have to ask: why the statement on Christel Kahlil? What's she got to do with how they write Blacks on Y&R and it's casting decisions? And the way Y&R is currently written, she would be doing a Black actor a favor if she "didn't help them" get a gig on this show. I didn't gather Debbie Morgan helped Darnell Williams get his work and after seeing her as Yo!Harmony, I shudder to think how Sarge will be written.

@soapbaby: It all goes back to history. Vicky was able to expand the cast greatly. And i'm sure Debbie had a hand in Darnell coming over. I'm sure she mentioned his name in conversation and it was done. As for CK, it was in reference to an earlier posting debate I had last week. That's what the ending about "proof in the pudding" was for.

African Americans have historically in television been their greatest advocates for one another. They have banded together in times of need. They have spoken-up for one another knowing that either we rise together or we fall together. So that was the deeper element of my reference.

All the African American's on this soap, again - You're not alone in your fury (I'll call it that for now) my mom's family is italian. My best friend lives in Jersey (and she's not tacky, doesn't snap gum, is a mom of three and dresses with her boobs covered up) This Angelina crap is one I hate watching..... I know it doesn't compare; it doesn't. But when I saw they were throwing 'Snookie' on my screen and watched it play out? Pissed.

Now given that this is Y&R. I would rather the Debbie and Darnell have migrated to Days. Darnell could have played Abe's brother Jonah and Debbie that one time babysitter for the Blacks Caprice. Back when Caprice was brought on in the early part of the last decade she was supposed to have some ties to Frankie aka Celeste. And that story was dropped when the headwriters at the time were let go.

But since this is Y&R (and it is a soap about corporate battles..if Maria cares to remember) I would have brought on DW's as a former business executive named Richard "Dick" Parsons, who took the fall for Tucker via a federally investigated and federally prosecuted insurance company scam.

Richard thus lost his house, lost his wife, lost his kids and lost the respect of his extended family/friends.

Now the man with a past is trying to rebuild and rebrand himself in the business community and is offered a job by Victor Newman at Newman Enterprises, because Victor can relate to having done some time "probation" for his payola scam. Also Victor can relate to feeling alone. Because that is the way he goes about life.

Victor though would not know of Richard's connection to Tucker. Nor would the audience.

Richard would immediately hit it off with Phyllis when he met her at the Genoa City Athletic Club bar, while having a drink as she filled the "new man on campus" on her jaded thoughts on the GC elite.

Another day early in the morning Richard would bump into Yolanda aka Harmony at the coffee shop while getting a a 'pick-me-up' latte. And they would strike up a friendship. With AMC references as if they knew each other from a previous life.

The dynamic would be created with Phyllis bringing out a more wild spontaneous bad side of Richard and Yolanda bringing out the goodness in him. Which is the path Yolanda is on, but she ain't gonna be played by no man in a suit anymore.

On the business front Richard is charged with scooping up a small company that Tucker is trying to get from under Victor. When Richard realizes that Tucker is "his Tucker" he goes to have a heated confrontation with the man and demands that Tucker pay up the money he was supposed to put aside for Richard taking the hit. But Tucker is acting brand new, like he never made the promise.

Tucker's lack of care or foresight would draw ire in Richard who would plot vengeance. Richard would have some damning financial papers on Tucker that he kept hidden away that could bring Tucker down. And now that Tucker is at Chancellor it could bring down Kay's whole empire.

Richard thus comes to the Chancellor Estate to reveal what info he has on Tucker, but instead runs into Kay. Kay though acts like she is Tucker's assistant when she notice that Richard seems to be a little unhinged. So Richard thinks Tucker sent his assistant to "handle him" and relays enough info to Kay for her to put it all together. She then reveals who she truly is and Richard blackmail's her when he realizes that she will do anything to protect her son.

How long will Kay give into the blackmail? And how long will Victor be in the dark as to the fact that his own employee has the beloved Kay by the balls?

Nikki on the other-hand will become concerned as Kay seems to be otherwise occupied. Nikki thinks either Tucker or Jill are causing her problems, that Kay has relapsed or her health is deteriorating. Nikki is determined to find out what is up.

@yojoromo4469: It's a catch 22. I don't know... I mean if they got rid of these characters: Angelina, Sofia, Lily, Cain, Genevieve, Ronan, Avery, Eden Chelsea and Anita. And then if you replaced Maria Arena Bell, Scott Hamner and Hogan Shieffer.

Then a good soaps could return.

No, no, no to Sarge hooking up with Phyllis. I would, however, like to see him hook up with Dr. Olivia Barber. Maybe Nate could come back and be assigned to Sarge's rotation. The two of them would be like oil and water, and Olivia would try to defend her baby. Sparks could fly and the two get together. Meanwhile, Sophia gets hurt in a car accident and needs physical therapy. She falls for Sarge, which is frankly fine by Neil as he's looking at Harmony anyway. Sophia and Olivia battle over Sarge. Sophia complains to Tucker while Olivia complains to Ashley, thereby putting those two on opposite sides. Tucker offers Sarge a research job for one of his pharmaceutical companies, which Sophia heads. Olivia's against it, but it's a great opportunity so Sarge is tempted to take it. This would allow for a new triangle, utilizing the tragically underused Tonya Williams, as well upping Sarge's professional status.

Darnell will be brilliant in this role, but Maria seems to only know how to write characters as ridiculous caricatures, so I don't have much hope for this character. Hopefully, though, there will be some good Debbi/Darnell scenes!!!

Are you one of those limited humans who can only handle seeing brown people with other brown people? Sad. It's 2012! I think seeing Darnell with the Stafford would be H-O-T!!! And I'd love to see Harmony master English and take Tucker from the boring Ashley.

So we had Harpo in Malcolm, Sofia is Ms. Sophia always, and Harmony is a poor man's Celie. So I'm guessing Sarge is MAB's version of Mr?!

CBS, Bell Television, Sony--Fire these hacks please. I'd rather watch LML's Y&R than to see a great actor like Darnell be embarrassed by this shitty storyline. Word on the street he'll be sniffing around Ashley...

david46208,

You don't know anything about what CK or DM has done to help anyone. Right? You're speculating and also slandering with no proof. Really, what power do you think Morgan has when long time actors like Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott are treated shabbily?

If you want to look at what influence might have led to Williams' hiring besides his talent and success, then look at Victoria Rowell's ongoing campaign to diversify Y&R. While it may not have brought her back to the show, you can see how Y&R has been pushing the Winters forward on the Canvas and hired other African-American actors.

If he's Jack's therapist he'll meet Phyllis and Ashley.
They will probably pair him w/Phyllis and have lots of sex scenes, but I'll bet his best chemistry is with Ashley.

IMO Ashley's tough to pair because she has a prissy little ice princess vibe about her. She needs a man that throws her off balance and warms her up. DW'd be perfect.

Then Tucker/Sophia is where the chemistry is & his best on the show, but she's soooo young. I'd rather see YoHarmony/Neil than YoHarmony/Tucker,I'd be best for Tucker to morph back into Patch & hightail it to Salem. Kayla needs something to do.
