Could General Hospital Move to Primetime?!
Fasten your seatbelts, kiddies. We're about to head back up on the roller coaster. An article in this week's print edition of TV Guide (with NCIS on the cover) claims ABC is considering moving its final daytime soap General Hospital to primetime as a limited-run telenovela!
Update: The article is now available online at TVGuide.com!
According to the report from the magazine's Stephen Battaglio, an ABC insider shared the deets with him, and discussed how relatively inexpensive it would be to take GH to primetime. If you follow me on Twitter, you already know I think this kind of move is our best shot at keeping daily soaps in production. Univision often bests networks among the Big Four with the juggernaut ratings of their closed-ended, primetime daily soaps or telenovelas.TeenNick has also had success with a daily, telenovela-esque version of the popular Canadian teen series Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as British import House of Anubis.
I think soap fans would line up for a 13-week nightime version of GH — especially if that's our only option to see the beloved series live on! I just hope ABC commits to making this happen, should GH be cancelled this April to make room for Katie Couric. Soap lovers—not to mention the casts and crews of these programs—have been jerked around quite enough. Would you watch a primetime version of General Hospital? Sound off in the comments!

I would watch it at what ever time it was on & I wish that they would have done the same for AMC & OLTL

Doesn't sound too bad. I'm pretty sure that it won't happen, but I wouldn't be against it if it did. If I could keep GH (and get AMC & OLTL back) by doing this 13-week summer season thing, I'd take it! As long as they were 5 days a week for 13 weeks & well written, fine. I'd take 65 episodes of tight, fast, good story verses nothing at all. Most soaps are only good 3months out the year consistently, anyway. Make a smart decision for once, ABC!

Not that I wanted DAYS used as a guinea pig, but NBC could've tried this with them a few seasons back instead of Jay Leno in primetime. It could've been a lead in at 8/7, then followed by the usual. No, PASSIONS should've been the guinea pig lol

Season 2 of Night Shift put GH to shame. It was on SoapNet I think, so ratings weren't that much of an issue. I take everything with a grain of salt, but this sort of indicates the hopelessness of seeing GH remain in daytime.

GH viewers, I wouldn't fall for this mess. The network wants the soaps off the air and they've MADE that very clear. AMC and OLTL were taken off the air, so it's only a matter of time before GH is cancelled too.
I hate to be negative because we can't afford to lose anymore soap, but this is complete bullshit. We know ABC is not about to give primetime space to a soap when they can produce another sitcom or reality show. Plus, there's already a hospital drama airing at night...it's called "Grey's Atanomy"!

When they cancel GH, I will be willing to watch a night time show as long as it is based in the history of GH. Primetime will have a bigger budget. The cast would be scaled back and something tells me that the show wouldn't be pimp central the way it is now. The only way a character can get any airtime now is if TPTB are in awe of their pecs and bi-ceps. It is actually criminal the way ABCD has destroyed the show. I agree that it is really unfair to blame one pairing for the erosion of the ratings. I do think GH would have fared much better if TPTB hadn't worked behind the scenes to push agendas that were put in place to destroy the show. Focus groups and destruction of veteran families like the Quartermaines and Spencers along with the Webbers have all played their part. Jason and Sam have not destroyed the show. But, pushing that pairing despite fan love for other options has. Why close the door on a future for Jason and Liz? Soaps have flourished for decades with triangles. It does make me wonder why Frons and Guza were so opposed to Liz and Becky. If your agenda is to whittle away the ratings, I guess it would make sense to destroy viable fan favorite characters and pairings while pushing options that are so disagreeable to so many.

NBC owns USA and Bravo, so if they were going to continue Days away from NBC daytime, it would seem like no brainer to transfer it to cable. I have never understood why ABC doesnt have a mainstream cable outlet or why they misused and abused Soapnet. I am embarrassed to admit that Max loves the preschool Disney shows and movies and I am sure the Disney Jr. channel will be a success.
That said I could see GH as a summer show like Rookie Blue or using the cable model of divided summer/winter or spring/fall seasons like White Collar. As for the actors, there would be a substanial cut in pay but the greater visibility of primetime might lead to more work in primetime and movies.

ABC does have ABC Family, but there's no room for soaps there. The off-peak hours are filled with family sitcom reruns and The 700 Club. Hey, maybe God told Pat Robertson where the soaps can find new homes.

I am with you guys, I don't see it happening, but I wouldn't be against it.
If any writer can write fast pace 13-week story arcs, it is Ron.
Isn't Lifetime an ABC intity, why not just move it there, they have the room!!

why don't they do like USA or TNT, they have summer and winter seasons, when regular shows are on hiatus we have great shows to pick up the slack, the closer, psych, rizzoli&ilses, white collar, these shows tape a few eps, but they are really good.
let abc put gh on during their show hiatuses so we won't be bored during off seasons.

OK, I'm trying not to get too OT. However, in response to GHvetfan, don't forget that Guza and company weren't kind to Sam either. They wrote her having sex with her stepfather and then watching while Jake was kidnapped. That was totally to prop Liaison. The day Jason threatened to kill Sam was the last day I watched for 2Years. I didn't start watching again until this summer. Bad writing is bad writing. I'm just happy to have new guys at the helm who actually like soaps and understand what keeps fans watching. I don't have to have JaSam just as long as they don't trash Sam . I wonder if Liaison fans will ever be able to enjoy GH if their favorite couple isn't reunited. Can they move on with the show and stop the constant campaigning? Actually, it's not bad on this site but it's out of control over at the abcmb.
Anyway, I will watch GH in any form and am looking forward to the new guys taking over.

If the show in primetime didn't stick to the themes it does so well now: guns, darkness, and depression it has a chance.

I would watch General Hospital No matter what time it came on. I have been watching it sents I was five years old and I am now 47 year old. It has upset me to know end that they have taken our day time show off in the first place. Also I want Robin to be put back on as well. I am just sick that she is no longer on the show. What where you all thinking of. I would have loved to have seen Robin and Jason together. I hope that they find away to get General Hospital alive. Prime time is perfect. Just don't take it off the air

GH7ever- Sam had sex with her step-father and was given a hot tub in her apartment so Guza and pals could turn GH into the sleaze hour. She was given a history of marrying older men for cash so Guza could live vicariously and because Those stories were crappy. You stopped watching. That is exactly my point. They wanted to make the show unwatchable so cancelling it would be more viable. After that, they moved on to alienating Liason fans. We are not diagreeing here.
My whole point was that I would watch a show that didn't have such obvious agendas.

sounds good on paper. ABC is not committed. Even if they did this they would probably cancel it before it even got the chance to build an audience. GH belongs on ABC Daytime and should remain there.
