L.A. Times Reports Maria Arena Bell Saved MOCA

Seems like The Young and the Restless' Maria Arena Bell is showrunner by day and art saviour by night. The Los Angeles Times is reporting the showrunner has spared LA's Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) from closing its doors for good. According to the article, Bell took over the job as MOCA's co-chair and spared the  famous modern-art museum from going belly up, by raising over 50 million dollars.  Bell stated:

The reason I love the MOCA gala—and all the events I’m involved with—is it messages what the organization is about. This isn’t just another black-tie, rubber-chicken-dinner. The idea of that gala is what the arts can bring to people. It’s not about being an artist or even being a patron of artists—it’s just about what makes us human. It is the thing that outlives us all.

While I'm all for saving the arts, shouldn't Maria put all this energy into writing character-driven storylines on her show? To read more about how Bell uses art to influence Y&R's storylines click here.

Of course the Bell name is going to open the doors of those in Los Angeles high society. Good for her that she is effective at exploiting her husband's last name to raise funds for a worthy cause.

I'd recommend spending one hundred percent of her time doing what she's good at (schmoozing) and finding someone else who will be good at producing the show that made it all possible.

I sincerely hope she is better at this than she is at writing for Y and R.

Wait guys, this is FANTASTIC news! MAB has found her calling finally!! She can be the savior patron of the arts, and she already has a super red superhero costume to go along with her new role. Now that she has this new calling, she can turn Y&R over to a soap super-savior, and everyone wins! Oh happy days!

Hahahahahahahah....

Good, she should switch careers! She's clearly not a writer, but perhaps she could be a professional fundraiser?

I apologize for sounding bitter. "...It is the thing that outlives us all." Being that the performing arts is the basis of my employment, after reading the article, her statement makes me think the artwork that was her father-in-law's creation will soon be dead and she won't be aware that she (and a couple of others), were responsible for it's demise... Innocent

Is that why the show sucks? She needs to paid attention to her day job!

Showrunner by day? If rumors are true this woman has no day job since she's barely on the set of Y&R and just uses this show to impress her female friends. So every housewife needs a hobby ... Maria found hers at night. Congrats!
NOW LEAVE THE SOAP WORLD ALONE!!!

they say that charity starts at home. MABS needs to take care of home (Y&R) ie saving Y&R from cancellation instead of going out and trying to save the art world.

She definitely needs to pay attention to making Y&R better, they seriously need better people in charge, especially with soaps dropping like flies.

Auntie Ri-Ri loves the lime light and has a God complex, because she a savior in every avenue and turns water in wine... While I knows she loves the arts, she need to take notice how ABC is slashing shows left & right. She continues to gives us the foolywang storylines....Wish she stop this and give us the real deal... I wish Frank/Ron would come to Y&R and make it do what it do...

I don't want Ron & Frank near Y&R because Ron is no Bill Bell!

Y&R needs people like Jack Smith, Kay Alden or Ed Scott back. If not all three of them. They know the show and when they were at their worst ... that was MAB's best.

I wouldn't want Ron and Frank anywhere near Y&R either. I don't think Ron's writing would fit in and because of that Y&R would become a complete freak show if it isn't already one.

Good for her for saving the arts and is very important for our society and the world, but she needs to not be at her "day job", Y&R because she is terrible at it, lol. This show was worst than LML took over reins. I feel that Y&R needs some fresh blood outside of daytime with Jack Smith, Kay Alden and Ed Scott to save it from cancellation.

Sure, Jillian. Why should soap opera executives, actors, columnists, or fans care about anything other than soap operas? So what if art museums fold? All that matters is YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS! Right? Your critique is pathetic.

I'll never go to L.A. to see this museum, so I could care less if it closes. If MAB wants to be a museum big-shot, then let her go and install someone at Y&R who wants to tell good stories.

Bob Lamm, you can take that high horse of yours down to the glue factory and the rest of us peasants will wallow in the muck of the soaps.

Bob, do you even know the difference between a critique and just a story? It's so "pathetic" as you say, but you commented. Smile

Bob Lamm,

I think you are missing the point, which is that Maria Bell is a crappy writer and executive producer and she's dragging Y&R down faster than the "Titanic." Nobody is trying to downplay the importance of the LA Museum of Contemporary Art, nor are we saying that soaps are the most important thing in the universe. We are simply saying pointing out the irony behind the fact that she seems to be doing such phenomenal work trying to keep ONE franchise from capsizing while pushing another franchise closer and closer into an open grave each day!

If you think that Y&R is the cat's meow, then more power to you, but you are definitely in the minority there!! Laughing out loud

That's wonderful that she was able to do that and I'm sure many people kept their jobs which is fabulous but I want some improvement on the Y&R landscape IMMEDIATELY.

good for her and the museum. Still not watching the drivel she puts on tv right now. I don't think she alone is to blame ofcourse. I blame Hogan Sheffer. Jack Smith did wonders with B&B but I don't think he can juggle the complexities of Y&R. Kay did a solid job with it but needed help in the plot dept. Maybe if Maria and Kay joined forces..... cause I don't hate Marias ideas, it's her execution and follow through that suck the most.

See, I DESPISE every one of Maria's brain farts, uh, I mean, ideas. After Skye v. the Volcano, Sharon in prison, dead/not dead Cane, Phyllis as a "journalist", Kevin & Chloe, Angelo and Angelina, Victor/Sharon and the returns of Daisy and Patty, I wouldn't trust MAB to make a coffee run and not screw it up.

Please, Maria, go run that damned museum and leave Y&R to someone who still gives a shit about it. Thanks. Oh, and screw you for making Y&R absolutely unwatchable in 2011.

How nice that MAB can save the arts - now can somebody please save the show I have been watching for 30 years???

Man, did "Y & R" suck the big one in 2011! Just one preposterous, plodding story after another, with beloved characters not behaving like themselves in order to be plopped into a 'connect-the-dots' fashion. CBS/SONY needs to do some housecleaning this year and ASAP if this show expects to survive past 2013!

Bring back Ed Scott, Kay Alden & John Smith - A former producer and 2 writers who are knowledgeable in the show's rich history and can stabilize the erratic writing and half-assed tales being told by MAB and her co-hacks Hogan Sheffer & Scott Hamner!! There is not one 'storyline' (and I use that word loosely) working at this time: Diane's murder 'mystery' reeks of boredom and stupidity; The Devon/Harmony/Tucker/Kay plot stinks because of contrived logic and timeline issues; the Billy/Victoria/Chelsea 'story' is going to predictable as anything (DUH - like nobody saw that she would show up in GC carrying an Abbott?!?) C'MON!!

Get rid of annoying unpopular characters created by past regimes (adios, Cane!!) and the current scribes (So long Angelo, Angelina, Daisy, Ryder, Eden, Tucker, Yolanda/Harmony, Sofia, Genevieve, Avery - YOU WILL NOT BE MISSED!). Stop having characters getting married at the drop of a towel! Stop having characters become shrill & annoying for sake of plot (Abby, Lily, Phyllis, Jill and Kay come to mind). The Baldwin/Fisher family used to be fun to watch - now Michael has become a Victor Newman lackey with no scruples, Kevin has become a brain-dead dupe (being on the 'run' with a so-called 'pregnant' Angelina screams of desperation!!) and Gloria has never been the same since Lynn Marie Latham killed John Abbott!!

Something has to be done, or I'll have to find another soap to watch - oh, wait...THEY'RE BECOMING EXTINCT!!

Just adding my 2 cents worth...I agree with 99% of you. MAB needs to take care of her bread and butter job. She's gotten away with drivel for way too long and if she can't shape up, it's time to SHIP OUT!
