DC's 10 Best Soap Couples of 2011
No. 2: Shawn and Carly, General Hospital
In a year that saw the twin deities of Doom and Gloom (the Romans call them Guza and Wolf) rule General Hospital with iron, ratings-killing, clenched fists, the budding relationship between reformed mercenary Shawn Butler (Sean Blakemore) and resident bitch goddess Carly Corinthos Jacks (Laura Wright) proved to be one of the few rays of sunlight peeking through the darkness over Port Chuck.
Shawn began his stay in Port Charles as a hired thug working for the latest in a long line of ridiculous, movie rip-off villains for GH, The Balkan. But while fans screamed for everyone and everything associated with The Balkan storyline to scram from their screens, there was something about Shawn that made it okay with viewers if he stuck around. We’re sure the fact that he’s a big, steaming cup of liquid-hot, mocha sex didn’t hurt!
From the moment Carly patched up Shawn’s gunshot wounds, we were itching to see her tend to other body parts he may have in urgent need of care. The longing, passionate looks and that stolen kiss in Hawaii, only made us ache for Shawn to break Carly’s back even more. Here’s hoping we get our wish in 2012.

John and Marlena are my second-favourite Days couple behind Carrie and Austin. I'm glad they're back, but their comeback story is awful. I don't want to see John in prison, and I especially don't want to see him in prison for something as boring as embezzlement. Blah.

The only couple I like on Y&R is Nina and Paul. Bacteria gross me out. Eww!

I just don't see what's so appealing about Carly and Shawn. These characters lack chemistry. Laura Wright has only had romantic chemistry with Ingo Rademacher (Jax) since she has joined GH. Shawn is a far less interesting version of Jason Morgan, in fact, I cannot help but refer to him as "Black Jason." Sean Blakemore brings no charisma to the undefined role. Sean has served as Carly's lapdog and nothing more because the character has not been developed beyond that. I get that the DC crew likes the pairing and there is a lack of couples in daytime but this pair does not qualify as either "best" or "couple" IMO.
And where is DAYS' Victor and Maggie? They are one of the best couples in daytime and tied the knot this year. I also liked AMC's Madison/Scott, David/Cara and Bianca/Marissa.

I like Marlena and dislike John. Frankly Marlena is much better as a standalone character.
No Maggie.Victor or Jessie.Angie yet 2 awful couples from GH wow.
Cord and Tina is a major win and I might have included Adam/Brooke. They were all sorts of sparkly in just 3 days

@Jphelps: I couldn't agree more on John and Marlena. It is mostly due to the lack of acting. If I could I would like to see Dierdre onscreen more minus Drake. Because when he is there it just goes down hill. It is one thing to chew scenery when you are a good actor, but when you are bad and you stand out in the scene maybe it's time to think about selling insurance or Real Estate.
Also yeah where is the Jesse and Angie at? Otherwise the list was the best it could be.

Good list!
But I have to agree with posters above. Deirdre Hall does all the heavy lifting in the Marlena/John pairing. Drake's "acting" has actually gotten worse in the time he was away from the show.

I'm sorry but Olivia and Steve should not be on this list. They are seriously the worst (most bland) couple ever.

I like Todd and Tea topping this list because TSJ and FL were all sorts of hot. Olivia and Steve? I preferred Olivia with Johnny.

Victoria is so feeble she can't even open a box without someone coming to help her. I'm just not sure how much further this character can regress. I think their next wedding will be in diapers.
Great to see Tina and Cord on the list. Their few weeks back together were magic, and a good reminder of what believable passion and longing can be on a soap.
I don't think David and Dorian were anything but an afterthought. Tuc Watkins always leaves so they always had to come up with ridiculous reasons for this couple to split up. Their scenes were also written as slapstick, which meant no love or romance or drama between them, just Dorian, once a complex, elegant woman, shrieking like a howler monkey while David churns out catchphrases. I much preferred her with Ray.
I like the IDEA of Carly and Shawn but I feel like the actors don't quite mesh.

I am in total shock to see Hope/Liam and Olivia/Steve on this list. They would actually each get my vote for most boring plain couples on their respective shows. Doesn't seem like either one have any fan support on the message boards either. Hope/Liam aren't even interesting characters let alone a interesting couple. It's nothing more than your average sappy dull teen romance that has been done to death on soap operas. I also think they get way too much airtime and it is so much overkill to see all the adults talking about them nonstop. Olivia/Steve simply don't get enough airtime to even care about or really invest in them. It has always seemed like they are show filler so just gonna disagree with those two choices.

Hope and liam, carly and shawn, olivia and steve??? who was smoking crack when they compiled this list LOL??!! And the inclusions were almost as glaring as the omissions - yeah, I love me some jaSam, but I never expected them to make the list, but not including jessie and angie, todd and blair, john and natalie, or steffy and bill over any of or all of those three pairings is just wackiness!

@ Carol2 - I cosign your post regarding Dorian and David. The coupling had a huge imbalance because the writers clearly preferred Tuc Watkins to Robin Strasser.
It's a shame Dorian will not be apart of OLTL's finale

Thanks for the list. Always enjoy your take on the various couples and shows.
Sadly, I must agree with Carol2's post about David and Dorian. A once beloved couple (I stopped watching for a long time when Higley had David dump Dorian at the alter) reduced to a showcase for TW and his character while pushing aside the legendary Strasser and Dorian. Time after time, Dorian is reduced to fool or written out of character to support a David story arc. The story was NEVER about or for Dorian, her fans, or Strasser. And when TW left the canvas ostensibly so did Strasser, save for token appearances.
For example, in what universe does Dorian Cramer Lord marry a man who was going to leave her again (after he spent months supposedly yearning for her) to make a movie? She would not have deigned to be with a man who thought more of a movie role than their wedding. She should have wished him well at that moment and moved on with her life free of David. But, apparently, only David is important. Witness the complete failure to find a way to get this actress and her core character back for the finale and failing to even approach this fan favorite for PP.
If the show and it's writers were truly invested in the couple as opposed to just TW and David, no Dorian for the finale would naturally mean, no David. Dorian is part of the only supercouple on the show and has real ties nurtured through decades not a made up time travel rewritten mess forcing David into the Buchanan family.
Since they obviously will break this couple up anyway, it is such a shame Ray or Herb was not brought back for a true ending for this amazing character.

I would have put Villy at #1 but I'm happy to at least see them on the list! I'm so with you Jamey that they really are the only old school soap romance left on soaps today. They remind me of the supercouples I raced home to watch every day in the 80's. Their reunion in New York was total soapy goodness thanks to Amelia and Billy's amazing chemistry and connection. I've watched Y&R practically since I was in diapers, but it's almost painful to sit through an episode right now except for when Villy is on that day. No matter what they're doing I'm glued to the screen and usually with a huge smile on my face! These two just plain make me happy. Oh and the hair has been looking fantastic for months now just saying but hey my hair would be messed up too if I was with Billy lol

What is up with this list? Best of 2011 with Steve and Olivia and Carly and Shawn??? I do like Carly and Shawn and feel there is potential although LW is fighting very hard for it not to show. Where was Annie and JR, Jason and Sam, who actually got married this year after being together for years! The ommission of this couple is obvious. And I agree with everyone else how in the world could Jessie and Angie not be included? They are soap legacy.

I don't agree with this list. Carly and Shaun? Please. The only male character that Carly had good chemistry with was Ingo, but I was not a fan because Carly is such a hateful character and all Carly did was drag down and compromise Jax's character. Steve and Olivia? I guess I like them, but I wouldn't put them in the top 10. There are some glaring omissions in this list...John and Natalie on OLTL and Patrick and Robin on GH- granted the stories for them were crappy this year, but the couples are hot and always have been. They should have been on this list! Angie and Jessie from AMC??? They belong here. Bill and Katie - again, bad stories for them this year, but the couple is on fire. The only thing I'm glad to see is NOT on this is any pairing with Jason Morgan, Sonny Corinthos or Liz Weber. So over-rated characters and Jason and Sonny in particular bore me on a good day.

Go Villy!!! I don't mind couples separating because it's so great to watch them long for each other and then finally come back together. But it was torture not even getting to see them share scenes for months and my man Billy Miller off canvas then stuck in that stupid trailer sneaking around forever. Amelia was fantastic though playing the love and longing for Billy and the reunion was well worth it and then some. True soap romance at its best! I was watching that day at work in the lunchroom and people were actually cheering when they opened the hotel doors at the same time and kissed. Can't say that happens too often with a soap today! Love these two!!!

Thanks for putting the list together. I mostly agree but have some major departures. Agree with many of the responses, however. The list is incomplete without Jessie and Angie, Maggie and Victor. Sad too that David and Dorian made this list when TPTB trashed Dorian for the sake of story for TW. It was startling to watch. Dorian, Robin Strasser and her fans deserved far better with the show going off the air.

When we look at soap couples Angie and Jesse embodied the classic realm of what a soap couple is. They are in love, never been divorced since they both returned to the show and in 2011 the tragedy faced by them when the baby died still born and Jesse passed off another one has their own. That was what has drawn us into day from day one. When people make mistakes because of the "love" of the characters.
So this list seems to be more about personal favorites then an object look at people who deserve it. Just my feelings on it.

It is such a bittersweet year, as All My Children is no more and One Life to Live is just a few weeks short of fading away. I hate ABC.
I do think Tea and Victor are worthy of the #1 spot. The actors shared an amazing chemistry and I am thrilled I was able to watch it from start to finish.
I also love that Tad and Dixie were included, as they were my all time favorite AMC couple. I am glad Cady was willing to return and reunite this supercouple before the show wrapped.
No Maggie/Victor from DOOL? Well, that is no fun.

VictorTodd and Tea are the bomb!
I am an old school Cord and Tina fan and was thrilled to see them make the list.
As for Dorian, I've always thought the love of her life was either Herb Callison or Mel Hayes. David's constant coming and goings got on my nerve after a while and I hated that Dorian was always in limbo waiting on TW to finish up his stints on DH.

Thanks DC for taking the time during the holidays to post your top 10 list. I agreed with the majority of your list except for Carly and Sean, David and Dorian (Seems like all the posters are in agreement on this. How rare LOL) I would have taken out those two pairings and put in Victor and Maggie and Patrick and Robin.
Victor and Tea totally deserved the #1 Spot. Trevor St. John and Florencia Lozano have Super Couple chemistry in my book.

A list we should have seen Y&R's Jill & Colin on. How often do couples give off chemistry on their first meeting like that?
Instead MAB makes Colin into a baby-napper. The grandpa making off w/a double carriage filled with his grandchildren s/l was morphing into Hansel and Gretel type cartoon. Instead of developing Colin they create & develop Gen-v and ruin Jack with her. LOL
An awful waste of Jess Walton and Tristan Rogers.
