DC's 10 Worst Soap Couples of 2011
No. 10: Sami and Faux Rafe, Days of Our Lives
Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) has been Sami Brady’s (Alison Sweeney) constant, sturdy rock from the moment he began keeping her “Safe” on Days of Our Lives. While the road to happily ever after has always been paved with drama for these two—thanks in large part to the machinations of Sami’s dangerously-seductive ex EJ DiMera (James Scott)—in 2011 things got downright ridiculous, doppelganger style.
This past year, EJ’s dad Stefano (Joe Mascolo) convinced Junior to take a page from the old DiMera playbook, which reads: When you want to get rid of an enemy, replace them with a lookalike! While many a DiMera-sanctioned doppelganger has provided fun story for DAYS (Andre DiMera, Susan Banks, Hattie), the father and son duo having a common thug receive plastic surgery to look like Rafe, then replacing him in Sami’s life (and bed) was just plain gross.
No. 9: Victor and Diane, The Young and the Restless
We collectively threw up a little in our mouths at the thought of red-hot, thirtysomething Maura West having to simulate the bedroom boot, scoot and boogie with Eric Braeden asThe Young and the Restless reunited angry exes Diane and Victor in 2011. While May/December romances have always been a staple of soaps, the phenomenal West being obviously much too young to play Diane—a woman who was busy busting up Jack (then Terry Lester) and Patty’s (then Andrea Evans) marriage back when West was no doubt learning her ABC’s—made the pairing downright gruesome to witness.
Why on Earth would a sultry, venomous, capable architect like Diane be so desperate as to drop to her drawers for every senior citizen in town; especially one who had already kicked her to the curb once for Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott)? Sure, the housing market had hit a slump, but this was ridiculous! The fact that Diane shared several sizzling romps with Victor’s much-more-age-appropriate-for-West son Nicholas (Joshua Morrow) only made the Victor and Diane mesh up all the more unbearable. Instead of tossing Diane out of the back of that ambulance like a bale of hay, Braeden should have done that to whoever wrote this stinkbomb of a storyline.

This list is missing Y&R's Cane/Lily and GH"s Jason/Sam. I also don't see the point of GH's Maxie/Matt and would trade them out for "non-couples": GH's Tracy/Anthony or AMC's Jane/David.

I think Sofia and Neil should be on this list. I have never watched a couple as dull as these two. Poor Kristoff St. John. He serves so much better..this storyline is horribly boring.

I agree, Sofia and Neil are the WORST excuse for a couple that I have seen on ANY show in ages. Not only are they contrived and non-believable, but they have NO chemistry, and Julie Pace Mitchell continues to make me cringe with her one-note, monotonous line recitations. Neil appears to be as passionate about her as a man on a diet would be about over a pot full of steamed parsley.
Don't get me wrong, I would love for them to give Neil a full-figured woman to rock his world---since it's clear that my Drucilla won't be returning anytime soon to rock his world----but Julie Pace Mitchell has always been awful. She has no chemistry with ANY man on the canvas and needs to be recast.
They need to find someone like Countess Vaughan-- funny, interesting, natural, confident...........
They are the WORST of the WORST. Watching them pretend to make their relationship work is the equivalent, almost, of Chinese water torture!!
They need to end!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst part of this couple is a lack of believable conflict. Instead, a 40something woman has endless daddy issues and her dumbass frat boy husband disappears for long stretches of time while she cowers in the corner. Why does he stay away? A shocking secret. A secret so horrible that when Victoria learns, she...forgives him immediately! Wow, talk about drama.
Sharon and Adam are devoted solely to how much Sharon can debase herself and how much Adam can degrade her. The more he hurts her, the hotter it's supposed to be. That's it.
I don't think Tracy/Anthony were ever even going to be a couple, so I wouldn't have put them on the list.
I would have chosen:
Y&R Sharon/Sam A couple so dull and the only reason they had sex was because his dog died! If that's not a metaphor for romance on today's Y&R, what would be?
OLTL John/Natalie. This is a couple where the leading man barely manages to speak to the woman, can barely contain his disdain for her or her child, and a dozen characters have to TELL viewers about this great love, because it is never ever shown, since John actually showing emotion is just too much for us to take. Natalie is such a weak character that she was going to marry a man she did not love, or even like. Crap all around.
OLTL Tomas/Blair. The show never made an effort to build this relationship. Tomas is a huge mess of a character who was thrown to the wolves for the two Todds and then suddenly, half-heartedly redeemed when Ted King signed up for PP. A waste.
OLTL Clint/Viki. JvD and Erika Slezak have never had chemistry, and it's impossible for me to believe they are in love, or that Viki would even be able to stomach the man after what he has done.
OLTL Jess/Ford. Disgusting. Not only was a rape storyline rewritten into hot sex (such hot sex that the woman was in awful pain throughout), but a man who repeatedly kept her away from her children and who tried to drive her mother to the same mental breakdown is apparently a hero. Why...well, we don't know. It's because he likes to take his shirt off and stand around with his mouth open. Now that's love.

@Everyone: Some of these actresses (Y&R) and actors too (Y&R mostly) who can't act their way out of a paper bag sure must spend an awful lot of time on the "casting couch" to get these gigs and maintain them. What else are they there for.

It's a shame that no one on the AMC writing staff had the guts to push for Real Erica and David again. If David and Jane did anything, it proved that Susan and Vincent more than still had it. David and Erica set Pine Valley ablaze the first time, but had AMC gone back there with all that that had happened between them...yikes, heads would have rolled. Such a wasted opportunity.

Because it was a godawful Kreizman horror story which LB blessedly stopped cold as soon as she possibly could! I'll forever be grateful she created a MUCH better direction for David, a real future for him should AMC continue!

Good list. I would’ve added, Dante/Lulu, Sonny/Brenda (sad, but true), RealRafe/Sami, Sofia and any man with the last name Winters.
True. That's why I never found them believable, neither did anyone else and certainly not the writers, who were not the least bit invested because their entire "relationship" was all about Todd.
I disagree, but to each their own.

I am so glad that this is not the list for the majority. I for one think that Sharon and Adam Newman are one of the best couples to ever be created in day time soaps.

Sharon and Adam would be on the Best Couple EVER for me. I love Adam and Sharon. I also agree that Victor and Tea on One Life are white hot!
Disagree with Liam and Hope pairing. Hope needs to let that man-whore (Liam) go. He deserves that slut Steffy all day long. May she piss all over him with his daddy, Dollar Bill Spencer.

Oh so many worst couples to choose from...I agree with most of the list- except Adam and Sharon. Their portrayers have great chemistry and the writers went and screwed it up and made Adam even more unredeemable than the first time they made him unredeemable.
The WORST couple that tops my list is Jalame from GH. The biggest flop of a couple in soap history.

Shadam shouldn't be on the worst couples list, more like the most ruined couple.....the writers managed to make Shadam work back in 2010 only to be ruined in 2011. Liam and Hope need to be on this list also. Ugh!
