The Chew's Mario Batali: "It’s As If I Had Chopped Off Erica Kane’s Head"
By Jillian Bowe on October 04, 2011

Gotta love that silver-tounged Mario Batali. The Chew co-host recently spoke with New York Magazine about his new cooking show, which replaced All My Children on ABC, and discussed the wrath soap fans have been unleashing against him on Twitter:
Dude, they are so mad at me, says Batali. It’s as if I had chopped off Erica Kane’s head. They’re not happy, and they’re on the Twitter-sphere, and they’ve got beautiful vocabularies. They attack him in person, too, calling the show The Spew. He tries to placate them by promising to bring Susan Lucci on as a guest, and explaining that “it wasn’t a Mario Batali decision. It was an ABC-TV decision. I say, ‘I’m just a pawn in the game.’

Whatever. You're the victim now? Part of the job of being a "celebrity" is being able to deal with all types of criticism. Quick tip Batali: try to be humble and hope that you have fans some day that are as connected to you.
If only I was a millionaire. I'd love to stage an AMC inspired flashmob set to AMC's theme at some place he is.

He was the one who said the show's should have ended a long time ago. Now if you can't take the heat of the kitchen get out. Anyone have his twitter info? I say we all tell him get out of the kitchen..

I wish this douchebag would shut the PHUCK up!! He speaks out of his ass in 95% of his interviews and very little of it seems to make any real sense. He's nothing but a media whore. Counting down the days until his pathetic show crashes and burns!!
But at least he's smart enough to know that you don't BLEEP with soap fans!

I never was a big AMC fan because I have never been a Susan Lucci fan, but this so called chef????? I wouldn't tune in to watch that slob even if none of this other stuff was happening. I have read some of his interviews in the past and calling him a slob is not an over the top, angry because he is on in place of a soap, name. He is what he is.... a slob.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he fails to mention he made a few crappy comments re: soaps or / and soap fans in the press. I don't blame these cooks for wanting their show to succeed they need livelihood like everybody else unfortunately, my beef is with Brian Scott Frons and they are caught in the crossfire...Sorry but shit happens. Anything he is part of I want to fail and that includes the Chew.

Did Mario Batali ever make a remark about how his show is here and soap fans need to get used to it? That's what my mom told me. Can anyone verify this?

I have to go to ask on Facebook because they know a lot of particulars about the chew esp early on and all that but he made some flippant remarks in the press I forgot now exactly what they are.

Aren't people entitled to their points of view though? I'm a lifelong OLTL and AMC fan but some of the craziness of my fellow soap fans is just sad and disturbing. I never wish death threats and things on frons or the cast of the chew. And some of the people on some of these message boards come off as crazy soap fans.
The thing is at the end of the day no matter how much we dislike the chew and later the revolution soaps on abc are pretty much gone. But that's no reason for some people with extreme POV's wishing death threats and saying they were going to some of TPTB at abc over a scripted drama.

This clown just does not get it. Why would anyone take the advice of a fat guy that can't dress ? Should we all cook like him and look like him ? Forget the SOAPS, his show stinks but, it's easier to blame daytime soap fans then to admit that someone made a big boo boo, and thought they could get off on the cheap. Most people will not watch this QVC channel type of programming. Watching this show is like watching an infomercial and I always change the channel when infomercials are on TV. ABC lost a lot of loyal FANS and I am one of them. This CONSUMER will not CONSUME YOUR GARBAGE !
PERIOD !

If indeed he did get death threats, he'd be completely ridiculous if he took them seriously. Eric Braden got death threats in the eighties when Victor held someone captive in a basement and fed him rats on Y&R. On Days, Louise Sorrel got death threats when Vivian buried Carly alive in the nineties. I'm sure Brian Frons hasn't gotten many valentines lately.
I'm not justifying death threats, my point is that soapfans are, by and large, not a knife-wielding, gun-toting bunch of people. Some of them just go to extremes when they express their rage and frustration in writing.

I've seen the tail end of "the Chew" because ABC apparently runs the show a minute or so after the hour and my DVR picks it up when recording OLTL.
It's Desperate television, which I don't have a stomach for. Everyone sitting around tasting some concoction that one of the cooks made. Of course, everyone replies with "that's delicious" when tasting it. What the hell else are they going to say"?
From the faux delight of the hosts to the audience comprised of seals that will applaud anything if thrown a fish, this show stinks!

I for one HATED AMC and was happy when it was cancelled so i did not boycott The Chew and have watched 3 episodes. So i can't be accused of being a angry AMC fan for criticizing The Chew.IT IS AWFUL and not because it replaced a AWFUL soap but it is awful because of the hosts. They are all good cooks but they don't know how to host a t.v show.IF they want The Chew to succeed then they need to have a host who can cook but who also has a good/interesting personality, which none of them have. They should get Paula Dean or someone like her to host this show because she can cook but is also fun to watch because she has a interesting personality.Plus i don't think she would be stupid enough to insult daytime soap fans.

That's brilliant; really you don't need millions to make this happen. Ask people on every board if they are in NYC; set a time and have them go to where "The Pew" is taped. He walks out of the studio; flashmob begins. And, you could make it last really long if you string all of the different versions of the theme song from over the years to illustrate the point that AMC lasted longer on broadcast TV than his ridiculous show ever will.

I'm sorry you hated AMC; in the beginning and intermittently, especially when written by Lorraine Broderick, it was fantastic. No soap is great; look at Y&R the past couple of years - it has the added benefit that it was the number one watched soap, however, the writing has been abyssmal.
In any case, I don't begrudge the hosts wanting their show to succeed, however, when they make stupid comments in the press insulting fans and their sensibilities, that's when I get mad and want to take action against them. And Batali is a media whore. Plain and simple; he may look approachable on TV, but he is not. As for Paula Deen, she has enough shows on TV; none of them promote healthy eating and the country is in a terrible state of obesity. Telling people that more butter is good is getting really, really old. I am a fan of the Food Network; like Cooking Channel better, but that is where food shows belong. If "The Pew" had some original ideas and didn't make soap fans feel like idiots for watching soaps, then I could be on board, maybe a little. Too many of them have made us feel bad for being connected to a show for 41 years. That's what is going to hurt them in the end. Assault viewers and they will go away. You acknowledged watching it and knowing it sucks. It seems they are already losing you as a viewer and I will never put my eyes on that show - ever.

He's a big boy (clearly!) and this ain't his first rodeo. He was foolish not to anticipate blowback when replacing a beloved long-running soap that's been so disrespected by ABC over the years. And he continues to make ill-advised comments that make people even angrier. Tim Gunn, you're next!
