Monica Dreams of What Jason Could Have Been on General Hospital
By Jillian Bowe on August 25, 2011
General Hospital fans, are you curious to know what Jason's (Steve Burton) life would have been like if AJ (Sean Kanan) never turned his brain into scrambled eggs? TV Guide's Michael Logan has the first peek at Monica's (Leslie Charleson) dream about what her son could've been like, if he never became the second in command of the Corinthos mob. A fan favorite also makes an appearance, *coughs* Alan (Stuart Damon), in Monica's fantasy. Watch the clip after the jump!

To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit good guys aren't boring, they are just written that way.... it would be great if Jason would wake up and have his earlier memories back or a new blank slate that could give him a reboot. I would hope the writers realize what a mine of possibilities that could open up for GH minus the cloud of the mob. What could Jason be? the answer is anything if given the chance.

As curious as I am about "who" Jason will be when he recovers, I know I'm thrilled to see my Alan Q. back on screen where he belongs. He should never have been off canvas. Now if only GW can find a way to consistantly utilise him, even if it's in spiritual/conscience/"angel on my shoulder"
type sequences...keeping my fingers crossed...

Ahhh, the way it should have been. The sad thing is that I don't think Jason is going to be any different after this surgery. I think it's all hype and a waste of time. He will still be a murdering borg who is engaged to child endangering con when he wakes up.

AAAWWWW That choked me up to see Alan! I've missed him so much! Like mostly everybody else feels, they should've NEVER let him go. He is such a vital part of GH. And the thing is the actor is still alive and willing to give us more memorable performances.

The return of Jason Quartermain has been my storyline fantasy for so long. The storyline possibilities are endless. Of course I want more than just Jason back. Alan, A.J., Emily, Justus, Ned, Lois, Dillon I wish would all come back.
Thank goodness for the 'fast forward' button. That is what I use anytime the mob stuff shows up on my screen. Yawn!!!
I have liked how more of the action has returned to the hospital since GW took over.

I'd like Jason to wake up with all of his memories, from both his Morgan and Quartermaine days. He should wrestle with his past and former ethics and royalties. They could come up with an integrated Jason who keeps certain aspects of both lives and jettisons others (like Sonny and the reindeer sweater).

Wow, Alan looks great! I noticed A.J. in the picture. Would love to have him back.

Oh I've been waiting for this storyline for years, but I want the other Qs to come back as well. I also I agree that nothing will change.
I want him to wake up Jason Q again, but also have to deal with the emotions and the consequences of what he's done as Jason Morgan.
Alan looks great, what should've been!!!

I wonder why SB seems so very stiff in those scenes. IMO, it was definately Jason Morgan pretending to be Jason Q, who was acting in that clip. Too bad, I was hoping for more from these dreams, especially with Alan's return. SB clearly doesn't wish to be reQ'd. But hey, SD looks fantastic and for once Monica looked very happy.

Steve Burton seemed off in that clip. maybe because it was Monica's fantasy? idk.

And this viewer wonders: what would GH have been like if not for Phelps/Guza? It's sad that a fantasy is the only way to give viewers a taste of the show we used to love.

Steve did look really awkward in those scenes..but I remember hearing from an interview he did years ago that becoming Jason Morgan was on the best things because being Jason Q was very boring to play..I'm still not fully on the GW bandwagon, the past couple of episode this week have been boring.

@Mark: ITA!! I am tried of ppl talking about how the don't want him in those sweaters, & that he'll be boring, etc. Um, it was the early 90's when he was wearing those things! and he was a bit of a dork!! People have phases & they grow out of things & evolve. I am sure you are not wearing the same clothes you wore damn near 2 decades ago!
What we are really saying is that we want Jason to remember AND CARE that he has a family who loves him & he had dreams & aspirations BEFORE his accident & Sonny got a hold of him. Patrick is a handsome doctor & he don't wear no damn Bill Cosby sweaters! (except maybe that one time) and he's not boring when they WRITE for him. There is soo much gold to mine here, & they are foolish to not take advantage of it. This is an umbrella story that will have a lasting impact for YEARS.
I'll tell you what is boring: Watching the same character played the SAME way for 17 years, esp. when that character acts like a ROBOT! SB had a good LONG run playing Jason Morgan, it is time that he tries his hand at an ADULT Jason Q. He makes no sense to me, most actors would JUMP at the chance to play a different character or to have a major personality change in the character they currently play esp. after all this time. It should be fun & a nice experience... he should welcome this, b/c playing a borg for 17 years has GOT to be boring!
Or is it that he just doesn't know how to play the character any other way; as evidenced by the robotic Jason Q. we just saw above.

Oh, & one final thought: If Jason Q really is boring and terrible and no one in the audience can stand him (which I don't think will be the case if they write a good story), they can ALWAYS have Jason get into yet another accident and turn him right back into the borg we've come to know. It ain't hard.

I could care less about Jason. Alan/SD looks great and MOnica/LC vry happy. Too bad Jason doesn't die and we don't get AJ back along with some of the other Q's Guza butchered.
Could SBu look any more stiff and showing the same lack of energy he does as Jason. You'd think SD being back to film an episode might have re-energized him.

Steve Burton's lack of energy in these scenes does disturb me, but I am still a big fan. It seems that perhaps he's not passionate about soaps or acting anymore? He did express interest in relocating to Tennessee or somewhere that he had property outside of Hollywood in an interview he did about a year ago, so maybe he's ready to jump ship now?

I'm over Steve Burton. No cast member on a show should be allowed to believe he's indispensable. You're supposed to do what's in the best interests of the show.
And guess what? There was a moment in American pop culture when everybody was into the mob. The Sopranos (which Guza slavishly imitated) was the show that captured that. That moment has now passed.

Yeah! It's Alan!
SBu prefers the adventure and action stories that come with being Jason Morgan. GW needs to merge Jason Q with Jason M while the character deals with his life choices the last sixteen years.

Steve Burton says Jason is a very difficult character to write for (speaking about how great it is Garin Wolf as the new HW)that any writer can not write for Jason Morgan...LoL
I almost fell over when I read his assessment of the character he's played for 20 years how is it difficult to write for Jason Morgan? He's been doing the same thing in variations of the same storyline, reacting off the same set of circumstances since he ran into a tree. For a male lead IMO he is not a soapy character especially with the coddled throw any and everyone under the bus for his love of everything Jason Morgan writing of Bob Guza what I want to know if this will be continued by Wolf or will Jason Morgan be written to take some hits.
Thus far in a story about a brain injury its hard to ascertain because the entire canvass is kissing his ass because of it...so the jury is still out on that one. My guess from the month of Wolf its been the same deal as with Guza.

I think Steve Burton's stiffness may have more to do with how dysfunctional the Quartermaine clan has always been.
@liason4real, I do like your idea of merging the two Jasons and see how he battles his own demons.
There is one scenario where I would like the Jason we have come to know to emerge. That is when he has to clean up the mess that Papa Z is about to make of ELQ. I am now tired of Bruce Weitz's (brilliant but sickening) portrayal of Papa Z. You can not cure crazy, you just have to kill it.
If the mob guys have to leave the canvas for a while, I would rather see Sonny go than Jason, because Jason has always possessed superior critical thinking skills. Sonny goes off half-cocked too easily and Jason has to clean up his messes. We have seen what happens when Jason is not around to protect Sonny from himself. Since we have never seen Sonny as anything other than a mob guy, there is no plausible s/l to write for him. (He tried going straight for Kate, but that did not work out.) With Jason, we saw him as a Q (in a pre-mob setting), so it should be a more believable s/l.

It does appear (unless the rumors of Mr. Wolf's early departure are true) that we are going to get a multi-dimensional Jason for the first time. Having never played a real person, I don't know what to expect from Mr. Burton. Some actors perform up to the quality of the writing; others shrink.
He's had to do nothing except stand around in a tight shirt for nearly a decade and a half. His last year story line of any merit was with Robin (after Stone) and that was more about her than it was about Jason Morgan.
He has two expressions: stoic and the occasional teary eye.
A soap opera lead character needs more depth (unless Looza Gooza is writing).
Stay tuned.

@miztee246: I wrote on here somewhere a pretty decent storyline (if I do say so myself, heh) about Sonny getting out of the mob (due to the amazing Anna Devane & Robert Scorpio) and him 'trying' to do the corporate thing. I think that could work. In it I had him hiring Kate and trying to rival a newly revamped Deception (with Laura & Carly running it), or something ELQ has going on or both. I wouldn't mind seeing that part of it, and Sonny could still get his "power" that he craves above all else, but just in more legal ways. LoL.

Jason is a dull dull character as a Q or Morgan so he can die and let AJ come back. He can come back ala Adam Newman and screw everyone including mumbles over. I am sorry I have no interest in Jason anything. I detest the character so much at this point and some of that is Burton who is lazy and has been uninspired for at least 5 years now. He's like Michael easton on OLTL, boring and lethargic now. Time to go. I may not like Ryan Lavery on AMC but at least Cameron Mathison shows some life on screen. Steve is practically comatose half the time. WHy anyone finds him appealing as a leading man I Have no clue but to each his own. Even Maurice Bernard is more energetic. And Ingo who kicked a*s his last few weeks with better material and being given an edge what a waste.
Newsflash GH the Sopranos ended 8 years ago. Your time is up. Mob Hospital and Jason Morgan need to be shipped to the crypt along with all the Q's. And no more f-in mob families.
