One Life to Live Recap: Firework

Brody:  I’m gonna be the best father to you, Liam, and you won’t miss John.  Neither will Natalie... as long as she never hears this tape.

Author’s note:  Firstly, my apologies, ladies and gentlemen, for the unexpected hiatus.  I was spirited away on an impromptu vacation, which was followed by a family crisis, and this column paid the price.  Back to our regularly scheduled recap (hopefully)...  Secondly, I missed about ten minutes due to a special report.  From what I understand, I'm relieved to have missed it.

Brody fears he must give up his current family.  Natalie enters the nursery and worries about Brody, who voices his concern that he will lose her and Liam to John.  Natalie vows that she’s committed to their family, and when Brody challenges her true happiness, she insists what they have is real and it makes her happy. Besides, it’s time to move on from John.  When Natalie steps out, Brody wars with himself about revealing the truth of Liam’s paternity until he ultimately decides to keep quiet.  Natalie returns to share her elation that Clint’s surgery was a success, and she leaves to visit her father.  Brody and Liam watch the fireworks, and thoroughly invested in his family, Brody vows never to repeat his secret (and his character assassination kicks into overdrive).

Vimal shows up at Rodi’s to talk to John, but he’s uninterested.  As Vimal drunkenly rambles and touches John, much to his chagrin, Todd peers through the window.  Before Vimal can spill, they are interrupted by Todd and an alert from the police about possible criminal activity involving Ford.  John leaves to attend to business, and Todd uses the opportunity to manipulate Vimal.  First, he threatens Vimal with bogus charges regarding Liam’s paternity secret. Then, he lies that Jack is innocent and John is trying to railroad him. Finally, he aims to buy Vimal’s silence with a job, warning that if he declines, “bad things happen to people who make [him] angry.”

Ford is surprised when a kidnapped Jessica apologizes to him.  She admits she’s unable to handle normal issues, and suggests he got caught in the crosshairs.  He waxes poetic about how Tess is horrible, but she loved him and he loves her, and Jessica is sympathetic to his losing her. John and a uniform ambush them, but Jessica refuses to press charges, claiming the St. Ann’s escape and current abduction were both “a misunderstanding.”  After a skeptical John leaves, Jessica decides to return to the hospital to check on Clint, and Ford offers her a ride.  He cracks a “too soon” joke about her riding in the front, but they smile and decide to discuss how best to share their son.  Outside, they stare wistfully at the fireworks.

Upon John’s return, Vimal clams up and apologizes for bothering him.  Before Todd leaves, he shakes Vimal’s hand and transfers a wad of cash.  John eyes Vimal as he sits and watches the fireworks while letting a call from Rama go to voicemail.

David and Dorian continue to bicker about David’s fidelity, and David tries to show his commitment by getting naked.  They’re interrupted by a horrified Blair, who’s bothered by Jack and Todd’s untruthfulness.  Dorian dismisses David to offer support to Blair, who believes John’s suspicion that Todd paid off Brad’s dad.  Dorian encourages Blair to do what’s best for Jack, but Blair is momentarily irritated that Todd is ignoring her calls.  David returns in his patriotic Speedo, much to Blair’s disgust, so she leaves.  He again appeals to Dorian, who finally relents and admits she knows David would never go for hamburger when he has Filet Mignon at home.

Joey and Kelly share a “mutual” kiss and process what it means.  Kelly realizes she has changed her mind about being just friends, but while her heart is invested, her brain is telling her to run.  Joey apologizes for acting like “an ass” and trusting Aubrey". He begs for a chance to start over.  He receives word that Clint’s surgery was successful, and he and Kelly bond further over the news.  As they watch the fireworks, they cuddle. When Joey wants to visit with his father, she offers to keep him company, and he readily accepts.

Aubrey and Rama eavesdrop outside Ford’s motel room, and Rama encourages Aubrey to call the police.  When loud knocking occurs at their door, they panic and attack the intruder who turns out to be Cutter.  Aubrey has zero sympathy for his mansion eviction, and when Rama mocks him, Aubrey snarks that Rama sides with whoever is picking up her tab.  Rama steps outside (but listens with a glass, and shouts her opinion through the door) as Aubrey apologizes to Cutter for hurting him amidst hurting many others.  Cutter wanted a future with Aubrey, but no more, although he does request a place to stay.  She takes pity on him, and before bed, he tries to entice her into more scams, but she declines.  They go to sleep, as a wistful Rama remains outside watching the fireworks.

The highlight for me today was seeing David break out his Stars and Stripes speedo again to celebrate the 4th of July.

Hey Cory, glad to hear you had a vacation but so sorry to hear about the family crisis. I hope you are well. Watching today's episode could not have helped with you (or anyone) feel better. What an abysmal episode. Jessica forgiving Ford for abusing her repeatedly but not forgiving Brody & Natalie who had no intention to hurt her is absurd and insulting. I do not give Ron Carvialti a pass for Ford-propping by blaming Brian Fron's micromanagement on this one. The character of Ford has been made more and more despicable by the moment with no intention from the writers to craft a thoughtful redemption story. Jessica has been sacrificed to prop Ford as Brody, one of the few honorable Llanview citizens, will be character assassinated.

Thank you for the sympathies and well-wishes. The crisis is... ongoing. And because of it, my life is in flux. So I would like to give you and others fair warning that this thread may be spotty for the foreseeable future, and for that, I apologize in advance.

Word. It's episodes like this one that make me not feel so badly about missing the show or the recap. If anything, it preserves my sanity, at least on one front. Blerg.

I can't even comment on Mess/Ford because my blood vessels will start popping. It's truly outrageous. I've always liked Brody and I'm deeply disappointed and angered at what's become his clear trajectory, but he's still a newer character. Jessica, OTOH, is a legacy character, and to see HER sacrificed at the alter of a character so hollow yet repugnant (and growing more so at every turn) is rage-inducing. That storyline might very well become a simple one-line blurb in these recaps because any more focus or scrutiny might actually cause me to give up entirely.

Hi Cory! Welcome back and I hope you had a nice vacation. I am sorry about the family crisis.

Now, about OLTL! Ugh. I wanted to jump into the TV screen and *itch slap Jessica all the way back to Eterna! Is she insane? Well, yes, actually Jessica IS insane! She actually apologized to that low life scum sucking Ford!

Baby Liam is such a cutey pie and he sure lights up around Brody.

I feel so bad for good guy Brody who is going to end up all alone. Heck, even Deanna has Rick the porn guy!

John is now in a funk because he doesn't have a new bed mate! Hello, John, maybe you should go see the doctor and get a checkup before your next round of bed hopping.

My public service announcement...from David Gregory's Facebook page:

"[Robert] Ford will be on July 1, 5, 13, 21, 26, 28, and 29."

Hopefully, I can safeguard the sanity of any OLTL viewers who DESPISE the character of Ford. There are five dates left in July. Let's make the most of it!

Sincerely,

Soapbaby,

Child of the Soap Opera

I echo the “Welcome back!” Cory! I too am sorry about the family crisis… And so sorry this episode was what you had to come back too. Seriously, despite my love for the show, I'm not blind to it's faults. There is at least one episode every week that makes me roll my eyes the entire show, and this one was it.

There is a script that had been floating around that takes place inside of Rodi’s (I wont post what the script contains, because it’s spoilers). But SERIOUSLY, as much as that place has been featured the last few days, there’s a reason for it, other than John drowning his sorrows. I swear, if that damn script doesn’t take place this week, I’m going to LOSE IT!

For the record, I’m going to stop mentioning Fess (Ford/Tess) after this post because:

A) the pairing just makes me f*cking ill.
B) I just don’t have the energy to say anything I haven’t already said about them already.
C) with only so many months left, I’d rather spend it talking about what I love rather than what I hate. I can fanwank just about everything else on OLTL. I cannot and WILL not fanwank anything Fess.

That said, WTF was up with Ford being shirtless Friday and then again today??? Did I miss something??? Did a bound and gagged Jess ask him to rip his clothes off for her and perform a Chippendale’s act or something??? Why the hell does he need to be shirtless all the damn time??? Seriously! I get it! I know he’s hot in real life, but PUT ON A DAMN SHIRT, DUDE! Only guy I want to see shirtless on this show is RH… again. It’s much more special when it’s normal to have the shirt off, like coming out of the shower, not for just any damn reason! That said, if I don’t get a fracken “hot DAYUM! My skin’s on fire! I need a bourbon, a man and a cigarette!” type of love scene between Original Recipe T&B before this show goes off the air, I’m going to WAIL on Carlivati’s a**! They have it in them, it’s been proven. RH walking out shirtless was a step in the right direction, considering I never thought we’d even get THAT from him. No more fade to black crap with just some hot kisses. I’m grown now, I can take it all! B*lls to walls. YES, I totally went there!

That said, Tuc Watkins is HOTTT! I always thought he was good looking, but I thought he looked exceptionally handsome at the Emmy's, and I've been taking closer looks at him lately! lmao

Welcome back, Cory!

Yes,Baby Liam was the best thing about today's show. Ridiculously adorable. If only he could talk since everyone seems to tell him their secrets.

Second best thing about this episode: Aubrey & Rama. They amuse me. Btw, I love how everyone's using the old school put the glass to the door eavesdropping technique lately.

soapbaby, thanks for the DG dates. Thankfully there are so few of them. GHfan-4now, Ford's shirtlessness reminds me of how I felt about Ryan's when I used to watch AMC. Yes, he has a great body, but I've seen it so many times and I hate the character so much that I've become immune to it. Just cover up already. Ford's nipples must hypnotize the ladies and make them lose their minds and their dignity.

That's the last time we'll get to see David in his 4th of July speedos. Sad.

I don't understand when Aubrey hurt Cutter or when they wanted a future together. I remember them having sex for lust, not for great emotional strength. I remember Cutter flirting heavily with Kelly and almost having sex with Dorian, and there wasn't any Aubrey-based hesitation.

If Kelly's brain is telling her to run, it's because she's bedded half of Joey's family!

Does anyone have a list of how many times they have changed the story on the night of "love" between Ford and Jessica? I think they're up to 4 rewrites.

Hi Cory! Hope all is well with you and yours, thanks for the recap!

I loved the episode, it was so great getting so much Toddy-Time, I just love this man. Vimel had me cracking up, especially with the remark that Clint is the most evil man in town. It was hilarious.

Aubrey and Cutter is a waste of time, I am over them and want them gone for good asap! I still don't know why they were introduced to the show, nothing but money that could be better spent.

Natalie and Brody..............yuck!

I really hate Jessica, but am happy that she finally gets that Ford loves his son. Yes, he slept with her when she was off her rocker for the umteenth time but like she said, she practically begged him and he was going thru his own drama at the time. I don't agree with all those who hate him, I think the way they solved this would only have been better if they integrated Jess with Tess, leaving Tess as the stand-alone character, but that is what it is.

If they put John back with that SLORE Natalie, I will be really angry. She doesn't deserve him and I am by no means a McBain fan. It is just disgusting that she springs from one relationship to the other and Brody has always been a thorn in my side. Can't wait for him to wind up back in St. Anne's, PsychoCop! As for Natalie, I just want her to raise her kid alone, without being the resident Crotch-cosy besides Blair. She makes me sick without heaving..

Can't wait to see what Clint has up his sleeves and as for Rex, no matter what his excuse is, there is no excuse for what he is about to do... but that comment is for another recap, which I look forward to, also!

It wasn't all that great of an episode today, but I must say that I am going to miss their Fourth of July episodes. They always have one every year with a scene in the pool and everyone in Llanview gazing at the fireworks. Damn, I'm gonna miss this show.

--Love David and Dorian! Sadly they will be leaving soon, but at least together!

--Wow, what a terrible thing this show did to Brody. Ten bucks says he's off the show in two months.

--Hate commenting on Jessica/Ford. Its absurd and stupid. I hate it. That's all.

--Liked Todd and Vimal's connection and the two's conversation at the bar last week. However, the dialogue today with John at Rodi's was atrocious.

--LOVED Aubrey and Rama! I love OLTL when they do these classic friend scenes, especially between two women. They reminded me of a scene I watched from an episode in the late 80's. It believe it was Didi and Delilah who were trapped in some wine cellar and decided to drink the wine, even though they didn't know where they were, or something like that. Just a really fun scene! I also love how Aubrey and Rama are kind of frienemies. One of the best scenes occurred a few months ago when they got into an old school cat fight. Loved the bitchy dialogue yesterday:
Cutter: (to AUBREY about RAMA) Well whose side is she on?
Aubrey: Isn't it obvious? The one who can pay the tab!
Shocking look on Rama's face!
LOL

--Wow Cutter is HOT! I kinda want him and Aubrey back together. They had some chemistry. Maybe throw real life love Austin Peck's Rick in the mix. BTW, Cutter can't leave town until we find out his secret that Rama knows.

OLTL, I beg you please...can John find out this week he's Liam's father? Pretty please! Oh and can Roger Howarth's Todd show his face to others in Llanview? Quit dragging it, you only have 6 months left, ya gotta start moving this stuff along! Pretty please! Smile

I HATE Ford and don't find him remotely attractive. He's skeevy and disgusting and should hurry up and sign up for that porn movie they're shooting at the Minute Man. YUCK! It's awesome that they're dragging a Navy Seal who's a GOOD GUY through the mud for this piece of crap rapist.

Like everybody, I'm completely in love with baby Liam! He sure does seem to like Brody. Too cute!

I love the BFF thing going on with Todd and Vimal. They are hilarious when they drink together!

And love David and his themed swim trunks! I sure am gonna miss him and Dorian!

Cutter said on the show previously that he was in love with Aubrey, and I guess that's the reason why he slept with other women as a bunch of "Plan B's" was because he was afraid that Aubrey was going to fall in love with one of her marks, and she did that with Joey. When they were first in town together when they were staying at the Palace Hotel, Cutter said that when they get Joey's Buchanan fortune, he told Aubrey that they were going to get enough money to both retire from the con-artist lifestyle. Dorian even taunted him about Joey and Aubrey, teasing Cutter that Aubrey was only after Cutter for his body, and that Aubrey was really in love with Joey.

Thanks. I guess I missed that; either this or the total lack of chemistry between the actors made me tune them out. All I remember was Cutter thrown at every female character they could find.

I too am beyond sick of ranting and raving about how much I HATE Ford and what is being done to Brody, a much better character and actor. I really do not understand it at all in any way. I find myself getting angry about it before, after, and during the show. I need to figure out someway to block Ford, Jessica forgiving and APOLOGIZING to him (WTF), Brody being character assassinated and ultimately screwed over completely, and NataLIE and McPain getting a happy ending out of my mind so I can enjoy the rest of my show.

Having said that, I loved Todd and Vimal, like always. I am beyond happy that he will be working for Todd. Todd threatening Vimal while lightly stroking his face was hilarious. I hope we get a lot more of these two before TSJ leaves.(lip quivering)

LMAO! I feel the SAME way, NatGuy. Good grief, I never thought they would put a shirt on Ryan. He would be half naked answering the door, half naked going from one room to another, half naked just staring into space, which was all the time, lol! After seeing that same body day in and day out with no clothes on, it stops being sexy and starts getting annoying and we start begging for them to put their damn shirts on! Then when Ryan finally put on a shirt, there were all the times they tried getting him wet in white ... :rolls eyes:. Now Jack Manning's got in on it now, hanging by the pool and having his shirt off all the damn time! Child, put your clothes on! With RC going to GH, they better hit the gym STAT! Laughing out loud

Missed this episode and I guess I am glad I did! As much as I think they've wasted GT and the role of Kelly this time around, and not loving Joey too much, either...why can they not stick around and make the disgusting duo of Jess and Ford the ones who leave town early???!!! The are a friggin' joke and I agree with everyone else's hate for this twosome.

I just don't get the love for McBore?? They took the wonderful character of Brody and threw him under the bus to prop up McPain and pair him in another mind-numbingly ridiculous s/l with Natalie...who, IMO, deserves much better. I know there are those who hate her for her lies, but to me, she's 1000% better than the scumbag rapist that Ford is.

Thanks for the dates that Ford will be on-screen...I'll be catching up those days with Cory's updates! Liam is adorable Smile I do love the "friendship" of Todd and Vimal...but am praying for the day that RH's "Todd" starts to interact with the rest of Llanview!!

-Outspoken, this hate for Ford is very simple. In no stretch of the imagination is rape even remotely cute. People didn't like it with Todd and Marty and they certainly do not like it now. Luke and Laura were a special circumstance (like the stars had to align in just the right way to allow for such a relationship to happen).

This isn't like her love story with Nash. Nash didn't know she was insane before he fell for her and when he found out, he did what was best for Jessica at the expense of possibly losing his daughter and the love of his life. Ford is a selfish lowlife and this relationship is not cute.

-I'm still mad that poor Brody is being thrown under the bus. Seriously writers, Navy Seals are in right now! He's the one people like, not Ford or John.

-So so so love David. Will miss the speedo.

-Joey/Kelly....puke. I'm not buying this love story. Just didn't make any sense to me.

-Ford's shirtless scenes have gotten old a while back. It's like OLTL has a shirtless quota to meet each month.

I just wish that the writers actually paid attention to what the fans want. Aside from getting to see RH, I'm not particularly happy with the direction they are going with most of the storylines.
