Eric Martsolf Talks Booster Gold and Current State of Soaps

Eric Martsolf (Brady Black, Days of Our Lives) debuted as superhero Booster Gold on Smallville this past Friday. The actor also talked to TV Line about his role and the current state of soaps:

Daytime has been my bread-and-butter for over nine years now, so it’s a big part of my life.I have the utmost faith in the choices I made and the work that I’m doing. People say that the soap genre is going away, and in my humble opinion I don’t believe it is. I think this is the result of networks doing some penny-pinching and trying to put in cheaper programming. In the long run, they’re going to find that canceling these soaps that have been around for decades is probably not a wise move. It looks good on paper, but the fan bases of these soap operas rival those of primetime shows.

He's totally right! I just hope we can salvage some of the shows we love before they come to this realization.

I want all six soaps left to survive--but I'll be honest and say that it is appalling that DOOL has been renewed when OLTL has been axed. Don't get me wrong--I was a crazed DOOL fan in the '90s and watched it on and off over the past decade. But it is in such a dire state right now compared to the red-hot OLTL that it's very hard not to be bitter.

Marstoff was freakin' OUTSTANDING as Booster Gold! Watched the episode twice, which is a rarity for me these days. I was never impressed with his acting before (Passions or Days) but he completely NAILED the character courtesy of a terrific script (it is now apparent Geoff Johns can do no wrong) and Tom Welling's direction! Bravo!

I love OLTL and hope something changes between now and January to keep the soap alive. DOOL got renewed because, at the time, it has increased the ratings and there was a quite a positive buzz about it. Unfortunately, things have went downhill. Sad I hope things turn around, because I want to visit with my Salem friends for many years to come.

Didn't see him on Smallville, but Eric is certainly an asset to the industry and a great guy.

I'm glad he stood up for soap opera drama instead of the usual they are dying here but thriving in every country in the world blah blah...instead of trying to keep the genre alive by reinventing it that just murdered two more.
