San Francisco Columnist Remembers OLTL's AIDS Quilt

San Francisco Sentinel photojournalist Bill Wilson recently expressed sadness over the loss of One Life to Live. In 1992 he was working for The Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt, and became an extra when OLTL featured the quilt during its history-making storyline that involved Llanview’s Billy Douglass (Ryan Phillipe).

After going through this experience I gained a new respect for the actors in daytime dramas. It is demanding and challenging work because there is so little time for script memorizing etc. [...] It was a wonderful experience because you knew that you were reaching so many more people with messages of tolerance and understanding that were so much in need.

The Homophobia in Llanview story is one of my favorites. It was well written and meaningful.

I loved the homophobia story especially that Rev. Carpenter refused to disclosure his sexual pereference in order to avoid a false pedophila complaint. The fact that he had a steady girlfriend at the time still didn't clue the haters in.
I am glad that I got to meet a couple of principal actors from this storyline as it was playing out. They really felt good about the advocacy that OLTL was doing at the time.
I also loved the Eterna and 1880's storylines as well.

This was a year before I started watching but I remember seeing this clip on youtube. William was Andrew's brother and Sloan's son? Was he on the show prior to his death? How old was he?

I loved this storyline. This is the story that made me a life long OLTL fan. I was 14 and this helped me come to terms with my sexuality. Not long after this aired, the AIDS quilt came to my hometown in Nebraska and my mom took me and my brothers to see it. Being there I just remember feeling the love for all the souls lost and it was so moving to experience this, and I would not have known about it for years to come had it not been for OLTL.
