Regan Reax: Jake's Hit And Run, Day Three

The SLAP heard around Port Charles! I jumped when Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) smacked Jason (Steve Burton) across the face. My long awaited Jason-Liz scene was a little too short, but boy-oh-boy at least it came with a bang and few long over-due digs.
See, this is where my Liason fan-girl will come out. While many feel it was Elizabeth who pushed Jason out of Jake’s life, I always felt that Jason never fought for his son or Elizabeth. I readily agree that when it comes to Jason’s life, Sam (Kelly Monaco) is more accepting, but the night Michael took a bullet to the brain, both Jason and Elizabeth had decided to marry and be a family. It was Jason who then retreated after what happened to Michael proved that his life was too dangerous for children. So when Jason asked a grieving Elizabeth to donate Jake’s kidney to Josslyn, I had no problem with her throwing his choices back in his face. I would have added a dig about always picking Carly (Laura Wright) too. I do recognize that Liz made choices as well that kept them apart, but I have always felt that if Jason wanted to be a father to his son, he would have fought for it.
I found Elizabeth’s reaction to Jason’s request to be completely authentic. She is a mother who is grieving and not ready to let her son go. She’s also a nurse, but when your heart is trying to process the unthinkable, your knowledge goes right out the window. Elizabeth was reeling from the loss of her son, she wasn’t thinking rationally, she was responding emotionally.
Jonathan Jackson’s portrayal of Lucky has really been the standout of the three parents throughout this entire storyline. Every time he takes the screen, he breaks me. Lucky's scenes with Jason have been breathtaking and the ones opposite Elizabeth are reminiscent to those that made Lucky and Liz a young supercouple. I also loved his scenes with Luke (Tony Geary) at the Haunted Star, however I did find it odd that he left the hospital while the transplant was happening.
I suppose I should back up a bit, back to the beginning of this episode where Carly continues her request of Jason. I saw this exchange as a desperate mother who wanted nothing more than to just be the friend Jason needed. She just couldn’t. I did feel that the scene could have gone another way though. Jason could have told Carly that it was too soon to ask this of Elizabeth, that he needed to put her and his son first for a change. Yes, I know, Josslyn is sick and needs that kidney, NOW!
Here is where I knew I would have a problem with this part of the story. While I haven’t had an issue so far with the diagnosis, I don’t understand why the transplant has to happen that very night. Can’t Elizabeth, Lucky and Jason have that one evening to process all that’s happened? Trust me, I understand that Josslyn is sick, but she’s not knocking on heaven’s door. I understand not wanting to put your child through chemotherapy, but if you have a donor, can’t you do the surgery in the morning? There are certain things that just don’t have to happen at super soap speed.
There is no denying that these past three days have given some of the best performances we’ve seen in a long time on GH. It has been raw, emotional and not overcrowded by typical soap opera cliches. Besides the breaking up of Jake’s parents and the initial decision to use this story as a means to write his mother off the show, I haven’t been this upset over an upcoming storyline in awhile. For the most part, I stand corrected. It has been well-written, amazingly acted and heartbreaking; everything a story of this nature should be.

And it made no sense that she said no to Jason and then talks to Lucky briefly and the next thing you know, she's agreed to donate Jake's kidney.
************
I hate to given even an inkling to the writing for this show, but I actually understood where she was coming from and I did think the writing made sense at that particular point. (I may never say that again, so...) She didn't know Jason was there for five minutes, let alone the entire time, then the first time she sees him, he's asking about donating organ's to Joss. I would have smacked him too. I felt that given Lucky's being there for her, and him being the only other primary parent Jake knew, it made more sense that she was more willing to agree to him, after initially hesitating again, which she did as they looked in on Jake outside the door, than to agree when Jason first asked. If she had agreed with Jason, and Lucky hadn't been the one to speak with her as well, I would have thought it odd and more about plot and less about character. I love my Liason, but I felt Lucky was the more appropriate choice to agree to and ask, than Jason.
But if we're talking the entire storyline for Joss, it should have all been much longer, IMO.

I also think Jason asked wrong. "Hey, if your kid is finished with his kidneys, can Joss have them?" And my favorite, "it will bring meaning to JAke's life". Huh? Because Jake's had no meaning prior to that?
Lucky pointed out that other kids (other than the duaghter of the sainted Carly) will benfit and survive, thanks to JAke. Jake's death will be meaningful for having saved others.

So, I hadn't watched GH since they split up Liz and Jason (if there were every really together) . . . . but I tuned in these last few days. I also have to admit that I haven't been following all of these posts so this has probably been discussed already. While I agree that the acting is great, I hate this story. I think it was simply the result of a problem faced by a writing team that was re-directed and now didn't know how to allow Jason to have a child with Sam while giving up Jake. I understand it was written under the guise of Liz's departure (thank goodness at least that's not happening), but wasn't it also about Jason not being able to have a child with Sam if he had this child with Liz that he let go b/c his life was too dangerous? The 2 stories just couldn't work together. Maybe I am wrong but that's just what I think. There were better ways of handling it then killing off Jake. Maybe they should have let Jason into Jake and Liz's life even if he was with Sam . . . . Of course, they don't want Liz and Jason in scenes together though . . . . . . When they are upset with the ratings of the soaps they should only look to themselves and the decisions they make.

Fire Frons.....Yeah, I think you're right on target. Liz/Jake was a pesky little problem that Frons couldn't deal with while pushing the whole "danger, danger, danger" mantra for the last four years. RH was fired for "story line dictates" and then rehired due to fan backlash. Maybe fan backlash will get GH to bring back Jake. Heck, they changed the s/l where MyKill killed A.J. due to fan backlash and sinking ratings.

Well as one of the last Liz loathers still hanging around dc, let me say this point blank - you will NEVER here me say Liz said no to saving joss.N....E.....V.....E.....R. This isnt plotting for months to get your kid away from its father and then hitting him in the head with a lead pipe. This isnt flitting around a guy for months while you are dating his brother and then rowing over to his castle while your child is in the hospital. There was no plotting, no malice, no irresponsibility, just grief. I havent seen ONE person ANYWHERE bash liz for that scene, just some on twitter saying what she said to jason was bunk - which it was - but again she gets a pass because she is coming from intense sorrow, not reason. Lets give the anti Liz crowd some credit, at least around here we mostly bash her for things she ACTUALLY does, not stuff like this.

In regards to my own post and to clarify, my use of ‘they’ in terms of that possibly being added to Liz’s sins, was directed toward the writers, as they have a tendency to rewrite history to suit whatever plot they think of next. That's why I posted the Tony/Bobbie link because they always seem to want to change a few lines for current plot sake, no matter previous circumstances.
