Young and Restless Hunk Joshua Morrow on Nick Newman: "It's Just Not In Him to Be Like His Father"

Don't tell The Young and the Restless heartthrob Joshua Morrow the apple didn't fall far from a Wisconsin tree in terms of  his character Nick Newman being similar to his malevolent father Victor (Eric Braeden) on the sudser. According to the good looking thesp, while Nick has his father's corporate ambitions, he has his mother's heart and that's how the actor, who's played the Newman scion since 1994, likes it.

"Everybody always said from the day I joined the show, 'He’s the next Victor, he’s the next Victor,' and I completely disagree with that. Nick is nothing like his father," says Morrow, who spoke with a group of bloggers earlier today about the end of Y&R's riveting arbitration story arc on Tuesday.  "He is very driven and ambitious, but he has no desire to succeed the way his father did. He isn’t willing to do anything to anyone at anytime."

The actor goes on to say that when you get right down to it, Nick Newman is just a pretty decent fellow, save for a little eye-wandering.

"Nick, at his core is a very, very good guy. It’s just not in him to be like his father," the introspective actor explains. "He sees his dad as kind of in his way.  Nick has his eye on the prize, of being this powerful man in the business world, but I don’t know if he’s able to succeed to the extent that he wants to if he doesn’t turn more like his father. It’s a very interesting dynamic and one I love playing."

Morrow says he's happy Y&R' s writers didn't take the easy route by making him a mini-Moustache.

"It’d be really easy for the writers on the show to say, 'You know he’s the next Victor and he acts just like him and he did that same thing,' but it doesn’t really say who the character really is. Now Adam coming on, does have more of the evil, darkness in him. So I think they’re kind of exploring who Victor is through his two sons."

While Morrow says he definitely prefers representing the white angel on Victor's shoulder, as opposed to the red devil his baby bro Adam manifests, he does cope to a bit of envy at some of the nefarious stunts Adam's portrayer Michael Muhney gets to pull.

"I prefer being the good guy, but then maybe I’m a little jealous of Michael Muhney, who gets to play Adam, because it’s a lot more interesting when he gets some of this stuff," Morrow chuckles. "It seems like a lot more fun, but at the end of the day, I’m very happy with Nick. I’m very happy with the way they write him. He’s got a big heart. He’s a good guy and I like that about him. "

Be sure to check out Part II of my chat with Joshua Morrow, where he talks about the possibility of a "Dick" (Diane and Nick) reunion tomorrow. The climax to the Newman arbitration storyline airs Tuesday on CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless. Check your local listings.

In reference to the Newman children, Nicholas has always been the perfect combination of his parents, Victor and Nikki. I think the writers have always done a pretty good job of conveying that Nick is his FATHER'S and MOTHER'S son. Victoria, on the other hand, is the character who was destined to become her father. But ONLY when the role was played by Heather Tom. ONLY Heather could have pulled-off the task of portraying Victor's vulnerable ruthlessness as passed down to his daughter. Also, it really would have been nice if Adam could have been more (and remained) like his mother, Hope. That would have created a far better dynamic between the Newman children. At least Abby is, like her mother Ashley, annoying. Smile

And perhaps it is just me, but I do not like where this arbitration story is going. I DO NOT want Victoria, Nicholas and Abby to win. I want Victor to prove, once again, victorious. Victoria, Nicholas and Abby are just coming off so unlikeable and unsympathetic in this story. Far more unlikeable than Victor. And I do not think that is supposed to be the central idea of the story.

JM could not pull off a mini-Victor storyline. He doesn't have the talent. The writers are trying to make Victoria a mini-Victor and I don't buy it with AH. I could with HT. AH just comes across as a snotty brat.

For the first time ever, I want Victor to win. He earned that money and built that empire. I think I am suppose to root for Newman brats, but it ain't happen' with me.

I think the reason they have not made him mini Victor is twofold-1)The character is just plain not smart enough and 2)As stated with all due respect, Morrow could not pull it off.

I totally agree. Joshua Morrow has two settings: BLAH and BLEH.

The thought that he could play a convincing "villain" or anything close to it is laughable. The only thing he knows how to commit to is a bottle of hair gel.

In the past decade, he has only touched me ONE time, and that was in some of his scenes after Cassie died. Other than that, he's little more than a hair model with a pretty head of hair!!!!

I must admit I have a soft spot for the Newman children. I was raised by an ambitious and often aloof father so I can identify with them to that degree. I also like the way that Joshua plays Nick. He seems to float on the line between mother and father. He is emotional and loving like his mom but heard headed and proud like his father. I also agree that he could never be his father. Great men like Victor seldomly reproduce a great man (or woman). Few have. Usually after the main generation, the family starts disolving quickly. Look for instance at the Kennedy family. The strong and powerful Joseph who spawned this large family. He gave some ambition to the older boys but it was somewhat tempered by their mother. But as the generations come and go, the ambition and ruthlessness has gone away. So bravo to Y&R and Nick for making an honest well meant family dynamic.
I also like that Adam seems as ruthless and ambitious as his father. However his mothers sweet little head is starting to pop up now and then. I think we might find there is more Hope for that boy.
As for the current state of Victoria, Amelia wisely plays to her own strengths and does not try to immulate Heather Tom. She just couldn't anyway. Amelia, like her mother uses her sexuality as a tool. Or maybe even weapon. She is a softer and more feminine Victoria. But that doesn't mean that she is not ambitious. (I prefer Heather Tom as well to be honest). This Victoria seems to have studied her mother and how she used her sexuality to move men around like chess pieces. I think if one can forget the original version, this one makes just as much sense for the character. Heather always played Victoria as Victor Jr. Somewhat masculine and fearful of close relationships. Had that not been established so well, I think Amelia would be more accepted in the role because it is simply just as authentic of a concept as the original. Still she should do something with that hair lol.

I'm right there with you. I loathe Victor, but I loathe his undeserving brats more. I hope when The 'Stache gets back on top, b/c you he will, he and Adam join forces to take the brats down.

I don't even like Sham as a couple, but that was bold ass hell what Nick did, to get Adam to leave town, and then let Victor take the blame for it. smh

Again, I hope the Newman brats get destroyed.

Double post.

So I'm using this space to say Victor and Adam need to team up FOR REAL this time, and take the brats down. Abby shouldn't have let Victoria fool her into getting involved.

What would her strengths be? I can't think of many. Giving empty stares can only take you so far. I still remember that scene where Victoria bitched slapped Victor. That was fierce. On today's episode, we had to watch this "Victoria" stutter unconvincingly their her lines to sound like a bad ass. It was awful. And I don't really see how Victoria uses sex in the manner you described. She's just a slut like everyone else on a soap. She slept with Billy, Deacon, and Ryan for revenge/rebel against daddy and got with Cole out of ennui. That really is not that Machiavellian, IMO.

I do agree that Heather Tom was more masculine and aggressive then AH. AH is just a wet rag. She kind of reminds me of Nikki without being that pathetic.

I blame it on boredom. I'd find it difficult to deliver a great performance if I'm only interacting with the same three people over and over again.

Nick is 'nothing like his father'? Umm, that's cuz he doesn't have the focus and drive that Victor has or the need for power. Nick's too busy skanking around, thinking with the little head.

When they show the flashbacks, I can't believe how young these people look and how many years I've been watching this show! Joshua and Sharon pretty much grew up before my eyes!

I truly mean no disrespect to Josh, but I'm going to be honest and say that when watching most of his scenes, all I'm thinking is, "Shut up, Nick. And take your shirt off."

They might have killed me off of this show but my children can act circles around the spawn of Victor Newman.

I like Nick okay, but am so sick of his greasy hair. It was so nice to see him Monday in USA in younger days with clean dry hair. I am also very disappointed with the facial fuzz and that is what a lot of these actors do have, just fuzz. I am older than dirt and have had a beard forever, but would never consider having one if I didn't have the ability to do so and most of the actors, with exception of Neil, should just forget it.
I would have thought the dirty unkempt look would have been gone by now.

On the topic of beards, Neil's would have to be the worst. It is misshapen and grows half way down his neck. Plus his hair is horrible - it's been stuck in the "in between" stage for years.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesnt want those ingrateful spawns to win. I loathe Victoria (she can't act!) & Nick who has betrayed his father once before & Victor forgave him. I hate that they are going to win. Whatll probably happen is Tucker will trick/con Victoria's stupid a** out of Beauty of Nature the same way he stole the majority of the shares of Chancellor Ind. from Mrs. C! Then Vikki will go running back to daddy for help to get back BON. Honestly I dont even wanna watch it anymore & Ive been watching Y&R since early 1990s!
