One Life to Live's Erika Slezak Celebrates 40 Years in Llanview March 17
March 17 marks Erika Slezak's 40th anniversary at One Life to Live. TV Guide’s Michael Logan caught up with the Emmy winning actress to talk about her notable career.
TV Guide Magazine: Despite Viki's nine marriages, we don't think of her as an emotional fruitcake — like we do, say, with Erika Kane — or that Viki is disastrously unlucky in love. If, anything she's been a sensational partner.Slezak: She's been very lucky in love, I think because she always marries for love. Well, except when she married Steve Burke. But other than that, she always goes into marriage with the very best of intentions. And with very real intentions. She's truly loved her men. Also, don't forget her marriage tally is high because a bunch of her husbands have died — Joe [Lee Patterson], Sloan [Roy Thinnes], Ben [Mark Derwin]. The only one she divorced over and over was Clint [Clint Ritchie].

Def one of the greatest actors to ever set foot on a daytime set. Susan Lucci may be the "star" of ABC's daytime line-up on paper, but Erika Slezak is the true star of that network.

I agree. I didn't even take the time to log in and tell them how RIDICULOUS they sounded. I have learned that you can't argue with stupidity and foolishness. Well, you can, but it will win out EVERY TIME.
LOL!!!! I have seen YouTube videos of OLTL in the 70s and 80s. Like all the other shows, the writing for OLTL was far better back in those GOLDEN days of soap opera storytelling.

Erika Slezak is the best. In interviews and at award shows she always seems so gracious, so articulate, a very sophisticated and beautiful lady. I always liked how she has always had a positive word for everyone in the business. The media could have drummed up a rivalry between her and Susan Lucci, especially where the Emmys were concerned, but Erika always remembered Lucci's work, and vice versa, as both lady voiced appreciation for the other's work at two seperate ceremonies. Slezak is a class act!

I loved an interview that Erika gave back in the 90s about her Emmy wins.
She basically said, and I paraphrase:
"Every time I win, I am standing there holding this prestigious trophy and all the reporters want to know is: How does it feel to beat Susan Lucci AGAIN????"
I found that to be hilarious. Nothing against my Susan Lucci, who I love, but Erika is simply the best.

Ya'll know that I admire and respect you all a great deal, so please take what I am about to say with a grain of salt. I am not bullying, but rather offering my heartfelt opinion on the matter.
I don't feel that it's appropriate to "crown" either actress as "best" when it comes to the late Beverlee McKinsey and Erika Slezak. They both have offered TREMENDOUS contributions to the world of daytime television and both are/were brilliant actresses. When it comes down to "comparing" actors and actresses, it's always a slippery slope anyway because of the subjectivity involved in it. What works for one person might not necessarily work for the other! Actors that I like might be actors that others hate or find to be overrated.
So I feel that it's best to just acknowledge that both of these actresses have done MAGNIFICENT work and are daytime legends and just leave it at that.
Of course, I wouldn't PRESUME to try to tell anyone else on this board what to do, but that is what I feel is best, especially since Ms. McKinsey is no longer with us.

Yep, I've been a huge Erika Slezak fan since the early eighties. Having said that, Beverlee McKinsey is probably my favorite daytime actress of all time. When Kim Zimmer left GL in the late eighties/early nineties, McKinsey rightfully became the star of that show and made Alexandra Spaulding arguably the best character on daytime(and Alex was never the same after McKinsey bolted--no offense to the great Marj Dusay; she made a swell Alex but it just wasn't THE Alex). That said, though in my mind I know who I think the greatest is, this is about celebrating ES. Here's hoping that tribute episode does her the justice she so richly deserves.
