Greg Vaughan Turns Down "Testing Deal" With Days of Our Lives!

Popular soap hunk Greg Vaughan isn't settling for scraps at the table of Daytime TV. The former Charmed, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital star tweeted he had turned down a testing deal with Days of Our Lives.

As of last week, Days of Our Lives offered a testing deal, but deal wasn't on the same level as what I felt I was worth! Good luck!

Are they smoking crack rocks over there at DAYS? Now y'all know I can't lie, I was happy when I learned the original Cowboy aka Jonathan Jackson was returning to General Hospital as Lucky, but Vaughan is a very talented, good looking actor with a huge fanbase in his own right. You don't have someone like Vaughan on a "testing" deal.  You run, not walk, and ask him to take over the role of Phillip Kiriakis or Eric Brady. Don't feel too bad for Vaughan however, the actor also tweeted he has booked an indie flick with Brooke Burns and George Stultz called The Clinic.

Soap actors can't be choosers. What was he hoping to accomplish by tweeting this?

@TVGord, considering Jesse Metcalfe just booked a role in one of the most highly-anticipated primetime shows in recent years, I don't blame Vaughan for holding out. DAYS oughta be happy to get Weird Al with the state they are in, let alone a popular hunk with a fanbase.

I have said for forever and a day that he should assume the role of Eric Brady. And wasn't he up for a role many months before he was fired from GH?

Anyways, we'll have to settle w/Natalia Livingston (...).

Meh, good for him: Dena Higley's Days of our Lives is an abomination anyways.

A shame! Would have loved to see him on DAYS. The show really should have tried harder and looked into hiring him as a new Philip Kiriakis or Eric Brady, or what about Nicholas Alamain?

Miss seeing him on my screen DAILY. I want to see him on another soap ASAP! AMC is on a role lately with hiring past soap vets, I think they should scoop him up!! He could be a recast Jamie Martin or Trey Kenyon...I could even see him as Leo Du Pres.

There are many reasons to test an actor for a role. Now if the person is say oh Meryl Streep ok testing would be dumb. If you are Bruce Willis the show scraps the role and makes it a Bruce Willis role. But Greg Vaughan is in neither catagory. He is just a soap actor with a couple of roles under his belt (both of which he was let go in). Maybe they wanted to test the chemistry between him and a specific actress. Maybe the role wasn't a typical role that he has played and wanted to see if he was up to it (villian). He is not a star and only people who have seen him on the soaps he has been on even really know who he is. So enough of the prima donna act! If he didn't like the money that was being offered that is fine. But to refuse a role because he is above being tested? WHATEVER! I bet he tested for the indie pic.....

Days is a laughing stock now, a shadow of its former self, so I don't blame Greg for not wanting to get involved with this mess, ESPECIALLY not after three of its younger stars have just jumped ship!

I admire his bravery and his tenacity, but I hope he doesn't end up regretting this move. There are PLENTY of outta work actors that would KILL to have ANY job these days when reality TV stars have basically TAKEN over primetime television and film roles are few and far in between.

As I said before, when Susan Sarandon is doing orange juice commercials, it's time for us to realize how bad off the film industry is.

Ooh, too bad he couldn’t have been Eric. He's so delicious looking and nice IRL and he does have a HUGE fanbase from his GH days. I want to see him back on my screen, pronto. And everyday to boot! He WAS Diego Guittierez on Y&R and the character didn’t die (for once), not to mention he was involved with Victoria. Hell, shake things up a bit and take that baby out of Villy’s orbit!

I would love to see him end up on YR...I dont think AMC has long and when that goes off, I will be looking for a reason to add Young. Tristan Rodgers joining the cast was a great start, but if they brought on GV that woudl seal the deal for me.

Jamey, Jesse has built up some equity in prime time. People who don't watch soaps (and let's face it, that's the majority of the population) recogonize Jesse from Desperate Housewives, at the very least. Well, more accurately, they recognize his teeth and nipples.

What does the average non-soap viewer know Greg Vaughan from?

(crickets)

We have to come to the realization that even our favorite soap stars have no credibility outside of the genre. Hell, even inside the genre, they're losing steam. In a world where someone who was a soap superstar not long ago--Kimberlin Brown--can turn up as a non-descript judge on AMC, how much credibility do you expect a Greg Vaughan to have when he starts biting the only hand that is even offering to feed him?

Uh TVGord, Greg's been on a little show called CHARMED for a season. So folks have an idea who he is. He's also done 90210 and will be doing The Closer.

I also wonder what the testing deal involves in terms of salary...in other words maybe the issue wasnt so much that they wanted to test his chem or ability but rather that even if he got the job they werent offering him much money in return or maybe it tied him up from other projects. if he is booking gigs on the Closer and in independent films, he may want to keep his options open.

Jamey, I agree with you 1000%. Yes, we all wanted JJ to return. But. Greg is very talented and if those IDIOTS at Days couldn't see to put him in the role of Philip--and even BETTER, your suggestion as Eric--then they deserve to continue down the spiral of hell they are descending to. Days totally SUCKS right now. With the exception of Maggie and Victor, there isn't a SINGLE character on there that is likable (not even the annoying Hope and Bo..sorry folks). Speaking of the "a" word--as Cath mentioned previously and yes, now I will digress for a bit--the way they have used the great Crystal Chappell is simply a disgrace. She is being UTTERLY wasted on this show. For those of us who loved her on Guiding Light, her role on Days is an abomination!!!! One of the reasons why her character is so annoying on Days is because the writing is crap! It seems to me that they have even changed the character itself from when she was on originally. Crystal was BRILLIANT as Olivia Spencer Lewis O'Neill Spaulding and should have won the Emmy in 2010 for portraying the BETTER half of Otalia! (The only reason why Maura West got it was because ATWT had just been canceled). Although I LOVE Natalia Livingston (Bob Guza should burn in HELL for what he has done to the Quartermaine family on General Hospital), I think her character is an UTTER waste on Days. Further, why in hell are they bringing on ANOTHER Hernandez? When is the little brother supposed to arrive anyway? Suffice it to say that it would have been a HUGE breath of fresh air to have Greg on. But, I can't imagine the regime of Ken and Dena and Christopher being talented enough to bring him on with the mess they've already created at Days. Better for him to wait it out for something better. And, finally, in his words, all I have to say to Days is "Good Luck." They need it.

Yes, he was on 90210 as Firefighter Cliff, almost stealing Donna's heart from true love David. And on Charmed he almost stole Piper's heart from Leo in season 2. It might just be me, and I'm sure it is, but I followed him from his short stints in primetime all the way to soaps and back because, well, LOOK AT HIM! Sexy He also guested on Buffy and Sabrina the Teenage Witch... okay, I'm starting to look like some wacky stalker chick, so I'm going to stop now, but you get the general idea.

Okay, live happily in your world, Jillian. Wink However, ask your non-soap friends tomorrow who Greg Vaughan is. I wish it weren't true, either, but I have non-soap friends know who don't know who Robin Strasser is, even though they were big fans of Knots Landing and Coach. No one is thinking Charmed and saying, "Oh yeah, Greg Vaughan!" It's just a reality.

He was so memorable on the original 90210 that they had no problem recasting him in the new 90210 as a completely different character.

I mean, come on. How many soap fans were stunned when Kimberlin Brown showed up on AMC and all she did was keep a judge's bench warm? Seriously? She was on the cover of soap mags for years! I can't believe there's no one here who knows what I'm saying.

Greg Vaughan's fame is about on par with Alexa Havins, and none of the people I know who watched Grey's Anatomy last week recognized her from AMC. The reality is that soap "stars" on the air today are about as famous as the person who's reading the news on CNN or FoxNews during the daytime.

We all live in our own bubbles, and I do, too, incidentally. I've been a huge fan of Esperanza Spalding for a few years now, and I've been dropping my jaw all day today over all the people asking who the hell won the Best New Artist at the Grammys last night. It's just the nature of our fragmented entertainment world.

I stand by my original point. Vaughan is a bit of an idiot playing a prima donna in this soap climate.

TVGord I always live happy. You seem upset that Greg turned DAYS down. He was on primetime shows BEFORE soaps and has landed them afterwards. So he can pick and choose and with the state of DAYS I don't blame him.

I'm not at all upset. I don't watch Days and I barely noticed him on GH (I watched when Skye was on). I just think it's arrogant of him to turn down any soap right now, and it's especially arrogant of him to Tweet about it. It's schmucky behavior that never gets rewarded in entertainment business world.

I don't really see him being anywhere near the stature where he can pick and choose his roles. He's a pretty generic looking soap actor. I'm not trying to insult him. Justin Breuning was the STAR of Knight Rider a couple of years ago. I would say the same thing to him. Good grief, Deidre Hall was the star of a prime time series for two years in the 80s, and she is clearly a soap superstar. She can't get arrested--even on a soap opera--today! My main point (though I've expanded on it more than anyone probably wanted me to) is that he is an idiot for Tweeting something that seems so arrogant, considering his place in the entertainment landscape.

How is it arrogant? He didn't say, "The NERVE of DAYS wanting me to test, screw those bastards!" He imo is updating fans who want to know if he'll return to soaps. He turned DAYS down, bada-boom, bada-bing. With the travesty that is DAYS that's not a dumb move imo... You are right, Greg's known for soaps, 2 in fact and yet they didn't let Natalia Livingston test for her role on DAYS. So why is she exempt and not Greg? If it is because she has an Emmy, please... I got one in my trunk.

One more thing, speaking of the "state" of Days, let's review: The only storyline that has a modest interest for me is the Chad one, but it's totally on the back burner (PLEASE put him with Will instead of the utterly boring and no chemistry with Gabby situation). The rest of the storylines can easily be described as "ZZzzZZzzzzZZz." The whole prison transplant stolen body parts storyline was just morbid and dumb. That would include Bo, Hope, Ben, Carly, Heather Webber (sorry Lee), the warden, et. al. This was a TERRIBLE storyline, not to mention the idiocy of Jennifer's heart being taken out then back in again with Daniel and Melanie doing surgery in a prison infirmary??????? I know we have to suspend our disbelief sometimes, but that was beyond ridiculous. Speaking of Melanie, I was really looking forward to seeing her with Nathan, but forget that now..Mark is leaving. Then there's Sami. Well, enough said. (By the way, what was the POINT of having Johnny's eye taken out??????). AND NOW the story to end all stories: the doppelganger storyline. (For those of us who are still, kind of, Y&R fans, weren't we punished enough last year with this crap????) This is the LAST refuge of head writers who have RUN OUT OF IDEAS!!!! Greg, I love ya' but stay away. Stay far, far, away!!!!!!!!!

Tweeting about it is arrogant to me. "deal wasn't on the same level as what I felt I was worth" sounds arrogant to me. He may get his most ardent fans behind him, but I don't think he's helping his rep in the long run by posting stuff like this when most people in Hollywood don't know who he is.

We called him Pretty but Pointless as Lucky on GH and I'm not sure soaps are in his best interest anyway. However, I could totally see him making the crossover into primetime and movie roles. The man is BEAUTIFUL and he'll only improve with age. Get that sweet thing some serious acting lessons and he could be a real contender, IMHO.

Soaps aren't the best investment right now...but I'd stake money on Vaughan. I don't think we've seen the last of him by a long shot.

TVgord unless we know what things were being offered vs. his other offers, I would hardly call that biting the hand - hes just saying he thinks he can do as well or better out in the market place. I dont think he is some big name - I dont think he considers himself some huge name - I just think he is a working actor. If company x offers me a job but I know I can make the same money freelancing here and there at company y then I am not giving company x the finger if I dont take the job - now if neither company x nor company y want me then yeah i have to scramble and take what I can get to provide for my family.

I think GV might be one of those actors who are better off in primetime, especially on CW shows. I like GV, but I also think he's someone who might benefit from the multiple takes and longer rehearsal times (not to mention better writing) of prime time than the faster pace of daytime. He seems to know what roles he can get on primetime and has had some success in landing parts so I can see why he turned down this deal with Days. I wish him the best of luck.

All I'm saying is if I'm an actor who is looking for a job, I wouldn't be Tweeting that I think I'm better than the role I'm being offered. I have no reason to disagree with anything you have written, EET. I'm just saying he's crazy to put a comment out here in the Twitterverse about what HE considers his worth to be (because there are way too many people in the world of showbiz who take great delight in taking a mid-level actor down a peg or four). I felt his Tweet was arrogant. What if everyone at NBC felt protective of someone writing something like that about Days, and it cost him other opportunities at NBC. It's a possibility.

I have no problem with GV thinking he's better than anything Days has to offer (if that's, hypothetically, what he means), but I think he's an idiot for telegraphing that to the world at large. You never know who's reading in the Twitterverse.

For every Greg Vaughan, there are dozens of other actors who were bona fide prime time stars just a couple of years ago...who can't get hired today.
