Did Dena Higley Cost Popular Hunk His Job at DAYS?!

In the Feb. 1 issue of Soap Opera Digest, Mark Hapka (Nathan) reveals even more particulars about his shocking dismissal from Days of Our Lives. According to the hunk, who repped for the next generation of the soap's beloved Horton clan, co-executive producer Gary Tomlin gave him the news he was being canned, but said it was a "writing thing".

"[Gary Tomlin, co-executive producer] told me that it was a writing thing, so I'm led to believe either I or my character wasn't really liked and once that's embedded into your writer, there's really not much you can do."

Well, if it's any consolation to Hapka, the fans of Days of Our Lives don't like head writer Dena Higley, but there really isn't much we can do about that either. For more from Hapka, pick up this week's Soap Opera Digest.

Maybe all this back stage stuff will convince tptb at Days that Dena Higley is not the right person for the job. Nathan and any Horton should be promoted on Days right now because the other families are dwindling. It is the only family with enough characters in it to fill out the cast and make it a great show again. Instead of getting rid of Nathan how about pushing him to the front and bringing back more Hortons to support him? The Brady family is tired. The Kiriakis' never were a big family and most of the Dimera's are dead. But there are a hundred Hortons out there ready to burst out and make new stories.

Did TPTB forget that Dena got Days CANCELLED in 2003??? TV Guide was about to publish a news item that NBC had cancelled Days when news broke that JER was returning and the show was renewed. How they could rehire this hack after that AND after she trashed OLTL is beyond me.

AlistairCrane:
1)Because they're stupid
and
2)Because of her history with the show, in my opinion.
Remember, she was an associate writer on the show from the late 80s through the early 2000s.

Her history with the show sure isn't evident in her writing. The fact is, like Josh Taylor, she's Corday's friend and likely won't be fired unless the network intervenes.

I've always wondered why Josh Taylor is still kept around when he's never really used in stories. AlistairCrane, thanks for clearing that up.

Josh Taylor should be put on recurring or retire. I am so sick of soaps/networks cutting costs, but not using common sense when it comes to characters they never use. Caroline could be put on recurring after the baby storyline ends (if it ever does!). So could Lexie and Abe (or at least Abe). I love them to death, but if they're not getting storylines, one or both could go on recurring to save money. They haven't had storylines in years, and I wonder if they ever will.
If I got to choose who left, it would certainly be Dena Higley and Chloe to start with. She is soooooo annoying and I'm steadily growing to hate her character.

Yes, Days is slowly becoming the Melanie/Rafe/Sami/EJ Show, and I'm SICK of it!

I really think the first poster in this thread is on to something when he says the Bradys are tired. It’s true that various Hortons have gotten involved with Bradys over the years (Bo/Hope, Sami/Lucas, etc. ), but Days seems to have basically become the Brady Bunch.

I thought the death of Alice Horton would mean a revival of the Hortons, instead we’ve gotten Hernandezes. I want to see minority characters and families on my screen, but we already have one: the Carvers. Why aren’t they being used? Lexie Carver Dimera is a beautiful doctor who has an autistic son, a workaholic husband, a villainous father, and a psychic mother. The storyline possibilities just suggest themselves. Apparently, they just don't suggest themselves to Dena Higley.

And Lord knows there are many offscreen Hortons whose presence in Salem could revitalize this show.

It is time for Dena Higley to be fired. Wake up Days, fire this hack before it's too late.

Is there anyone besides Ken Corday that likes Dena? She has ruined my favorite show ever since she came on. It was getting "kinda" good for awhile but is now back to terrible. She can't figure out how to write for a character so it's easier to write him off and bring on a made up Hernandez brother instead.

FanOfPhilip,

What a great idea! I doubt that it will do any good, but it (at the very least) gives us frustrated fans of the show some kind of platform to speak out on!

For what it is worth, I signed the "Twitition", and if it is possible (without getting my post deleted) I will also post the link in some of the other Soap Forums (ahem*SOC*ahem).

There has to be a way to get a decent set of writers for our show!

I can understand the anger being directed at Dena, but Ken Corday is the man in charge, and, based on what I hear, he's VERY hands-on. If he's the one responsible for the bad writing and terrible executive choices, shouldn't he be the one getting all the criticism?

Ken is bad, but Dena has a history of bad writing. Plus, how do you explain times when the show is good? Ken's not as hands-on in the creative part of the show the way Gary Tomlin is. But remember, Higley butchered Days during the first half of '03 and then spent THREE YEARS annihilating OLTL.

Once you start playing the blame game, you can just go all the way up the food-chain to Sony and even NBC. I'll stick with Dena Higley. Hers is the name listed as Head Writer. She should be the one making sure the storylines are balanced.

Ken is like his mother. He never really gets involved with the writing. Betty Corday was very hands off as well. Sometimes to the detriment of the show. I think some people might remember the valentines day masacre in the late 70s. A writer who had an extremely brief term at Days was aloud to write out about half the cast. One thing I will say about Ken Corday is that he tries very hard to hang on to his workers. He is practically Shindler's List.

Dena is one person he needs to take off that list and let her go. I actually enjoyed Brash and Cwikly, the writers that Dena stole the job from to begin with. I especially liked the way they wrote for Jack and Jennifer. Higley came up with some stupid and confused story about twins from outer space who were actually Kate, Roman and maybe Marlena had a hand in their birt too. I got really confused by that. Anyway Ken liked the idea that was a total flop and she stole the show away from Brash and Cwikly. I say give it back to them and put her back to writing dialog.

Based on some of his recent public statements, I'd say Mr. Ken Corday hasn't got a clue about what his show has been subjecting its fans to lately. I sense that most of the posters in this thread are long time viewers of Days like myself. I wouldn't dare speak for anyone, but I'd say that the show is going through one of the worst creative dry spells it's ever had, and Dena owns that.

you said a mouthfull about a creative dryspell 6-soaps! I do admire some of the actors like Joe Mascalo for trying to throw us a bone occasionally. He has had alot of moments lately that I am sure are all him that have made a wretched scene/whole episode/whole week/whole storyline bearable for a minute or two. I have particularly enjoyed the scenes where he jumps into Italian like an old imagrant would do. Or that scene with Chad when he used his Stephano angry voice to stop him in his tracks. Between him and Victors one line zingers, that is about all that passes for entertainment on Days. I bust up everytime he tries to come up with a new way of describing just what a tramp Cloe is. Or what a little boy Phillip is.
Seriously, even if ya can't aford sets, clothes, individual colors of paint for each set (purple in every scene really?) one thing ya can aford are words. Robin Matteson, Allie Sweeney, Lauren Koslow, and Adrianne Zucker are some of the funniest and best word slingers in the business. Yet they continually give them drang and sturn to say. And if I have to watch Will pretend to like Gabi (because I KNOW he has a thing for Chad) and actually kiss her I will throw up. (I know that has nothing to do with dialog but the show is missing an incredible opertunity both creatively and socially).
So Spice up the dialog and stop the whos the daddy stories already. Decades up new story ideas. Do you realize how many whos the daddy stories Days has told this last ten years? And how few other types of stories?

Marknsprmo: I didn't know Dena Higley came up with that god-awful storyline! I hated the Gemini Twins thing. I thought the storyline would have been great if it had been portrayed in a realistic way. They could have shown up at Marlena, Kate's, or Tony's door one day, but they had to do that stupid "alien" thing.
Brash and Cwikly were awesome in some ways. The reading of Stefano's will in summer of '02, if I remember right, was written by them. I loved that because it drew on the history of each character with Stefano. Then Dena Higley came on the next spring and screwed up everything. Anyone remember the green goo storyline?
