Ratings, Rants and Raves: Shadam Sex Better Than Viagra For Young and Restless Ratings
If loving Shadam (Sharon Case and Michael Muhney) is wrong, The Young and the Restless fans (including this one) don't wanna be right! The inappropriate-yet-red hot pairing getting sleazy in the Big Easy helped Y&R go up 115,000 total viewers the week of Nov. 29–Dec. 3, 2010 (Source: Soap Operas Network). Y&R was up total viewers year-to-date by 227,000! The sudser also went up one-tenth of a point in households and among women 18-49.
Y&R's sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful, benefited from the former's ratings surge. While B&B fell 43,000 total viewers over the previous week, the sudser managed to go up one-tenth of a point in households and among women 18-49. We can't give all the credit to Y&R, however, thanks to the combustible chemistry between Mr. Adam Gregory (Thomas) and Ms. Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke)! I am so ready for Brooke to do a crotch fitting of Tom's trousers, I don't know what to do!
It was also a good week for Days of Our Lives. The NBC sudser added 118,000 total viewer over the previous week. DAYS also went up one-tenth of a point in households and among women 18-49. DAYS was pretty much jam-packed with action the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 3. EJ (James Scott) got his spawn back, Aunt Viv (Louise Sorel) wanted revenge on those who entombed her, Carly (Crystal Chappell) injected herself with a virus to save her daughter, etc. It looks like it all worked together to draw in lapsed viewers. For my money, the credit goes to the best supercouple DAYS has done in a dog's age — Victor (John Aniston) and Maggie (Suzanne Rogers)!
Over at the House-o-Mouse, General Hospital went up 78,000 total viewers over the previous week. The soap opera held steady at a 1.8 in households (tied with All My Children and One Life to Live), but went up one-tenth of a point among women 18-49. Am I the only one who thinks these numbers are a bit anemic for GH? I mean don't get me wrong, the show is at Number 2 in the all-important Women 18-49 demo, but for GH to have ratings that are consistently on par with two soaps on the same network that have a fraction of GH's budget, promotion and star power has me wondering why the soap isn't giving up more bang for its buck these days? An A-list movie star is guest starring frequently, Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo is back as Brenda, so why is GH basically flat ratings-wise? Oh well, Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brenda's date was adorable, wasn't it?
OLTL lost 8,000 total viewers over the previous week. The soap held steady in households and among women 18-49, tied at its all-time low rating in that demo for the second week in a row. I am enjoying the heck outta OLTL again. Mean, old nasty Clint (Jerry verDorn), Hot Mess Echo (Kim Zimmer) and pervy-good-fun Eddie Ford (John Wesley Shipp) have made Llanview my go-to soap city again. It's too bad OLTL is killing off Eddie. I think he could be slightly reformed and paired with someone like Dorian (Robin Strasser) or Echo and it would be a hoot, but then again, beating up on your kid is pretty much irredeemable.
(Jamey's other personality Countess Wilhemina Von Schtupptenham takes possession of his mind and keyboard.)
Countess Wilhemina Von Schtupptenham: Vait a minute, didn't vou write about how HAWT dis Shadam was on Zee Young and Zee Restless earlier een dis post? Did not dis Adam steal Sharon's zee baby and made her tink zee baby was zee dead? Yet vou still vant to see vat blind zee pervert penetrate her five days zee week? No?
Okay, I'm a walking contradiction. Sue me! All My Kids lost 142,000 total viewers over the previous week. AMC was down year-to-date 345,000. The soap held steady in households, but was the only daytime drama to fall among the coveted demo of women 18-49. Is there any wonder I'm hearing Brian Frons is looking to replace Kreizman and Swajeski, STAT! Oops, did I just type that?! Please disregard. See you next ratings cycle!

LOL @ AlistairCrane! After rewatching that episode on YouTube, I just know that Adam either paid that tarot woman to feed Sharon a bogus reading or he eavesdropped and got that information to convince her that he was her destiny.

AMC's ratings deserve to plummet. This show is TERRIBLE. Not as bad as it was during Pratt's reign of torture, but damned close!!
I think that watching Shadam onscreen was like a TRAIN WRECK, and therefore.........I couldn't stop watching!! Of course, it's nothing short of CHARACTER assassination, makes NO sense, is a complete slap in the face of history and is ALSO a complete slap in the face of all the SHICK fans out there (which I no longer qualify as, thank you
), but someone over there at Y&R realized that it had been a whole TEN seconds since the LAST shock value train rolled through Genoa City. So they decided to pull out all the stops..................
I actually am enjoying Sharon's fall from grace. The character had been too perfect for too long. And now she gets to feel what it's like to be hated by people!!! I kinda like this twist, actually!!

I think a lot of the ratings bump for Y&R is from the NOLA location shoot. The Shadam sex had me reaching for the vomit bucket, but I wanted to see NOLA and the other big things going on last week. I actually expected a bigger bump with the shoot combined with things like Skye appearing alive, Nikki/Victor's faceoff, and Y&R's main players in NOLA. Y&R has had much bigger bumps than that this year after Adam's return this summer, the Villy wedding a few months ago, and an almost 300k gain for a week in August when the promo was all about Villy being rebels defying their rival families and having shower sex. I actually think it's troubling that their ratings went from a 3.9 at the beginning of the week down to a 3.2 at the end of the week. But I'm still glad ratings rose because that's always a good thing in soaps today

I guess I see Shadam a lot different than most. It's gothic, shockingly-inappropriate, wrong on so many levels, which is why it makes it so hot. Luke and Laura, Roger and Holly, Carl and Rachel, these were all pairings where the male did unspeakable things to the female, yet the chemistry was palpable. I see that with Shadam. As for Sharon's character, while I totally agree she's been topsy turvy for years, she has loved herself some panic sex since Diego. The girl likes to drop her draws when she gets confused. LOL

Well...i finally stopped watching and I haven't seen anything to compel me to watch again.
I don't like nuSharon
I don't like nu Victor
I don't like wimpy nuLauren
No longer like Jill
Winters are never on TV
I don't like nuVictoria
Essentially, all my faves are no longer likeable because they all became one note and out of character. I am a fan of Holly and Roger, but not Sham. Chemistry aside, I never saw them fall in love to buy this as a love story. Sharon only defaulted Adam when Nick was otherwise occupied before they got married the first time. I never saw Sharon choose Adam, and I never saw Adam use Sharon for anything more than getting under Nick's skin.
Sharon has panic sex, but I never saw her really get mad at Adam for what he did to Faith. She barely wanted to testify against him and it was fresh.
So hotness? yes. Love. No.
Holly and Roger aren't comparable to me. I SAW Holly in love with Roger. I SAW Roger fight his nature to be worthy of Holly and lose. I saw Holly HATE Roger. I saw the extreme emotions develop over time and I believed in the struggle. Sham is rushed, and the emotions aren't believable to me because they aren't based in anything.
At least someone enjoys the show now.

alstonboy4315 ... I'm still seeing Sharon rising as a phoenix rather than suffering a fall from grace and Adam redeemed after all of this is said and done. This sort of scenario is certainly not something new to daytime, prime time or movies and will keep going on until December 12, 2012.

Brian Frons deserves a lot of credit for trying to preserve his 3 soaps. He has over the last year made considerable financial investments in GH and AMC. Frons takes a lot of heat from his critics, deservedly so. (AMC is the best looking soap on daytime. It's sets are beautiful. The homes of the wealthy citizens of Pine Valley look incredible, especially compared to the crummy sets of the Y&R gives to its billionaires Victor Newman and Katherine Chancellor.)
But, looking at GH and AMC, the problem lies not in the actors or production values, it lies in the writing:
1) GH's head writers botched Brenda's return. What should have been exciting, thrilling, and magical turned into blah-whatever. Really, why create a super villain and name him "the Balkan"? Is anyone not tired of hearing "the Balkan" uttered in terror by nearly every one in Port Charles?
Then there's the disaster known as Franco. What a mess. While I admire James Franco and ABC for trying to bring the actor onto the show, couldn't they come up with a better storyline? And, James Franco, has he never heard of coffee? He practically slept through most of his initial run.
2) AMC's head writers, God love 'em, have done some good things, like giving Angie and Jesse a front burner story, but the show lacks zest!

Please PUHLEEZE Jamey, tell me that the ONLY way you are comparing Shadam to Luke and Laura is in the man did unspeakable things to woman but she loved him way. BECAUSE, there is NO way now or EVER that Adam and Sharon will be comparable to the love of Luke and Laura.

Who will be the recycled writer that will get the AMC job? I bet it'll be Josh Griffith since he fits the mold of the interchangeable writers coming on to write. I do think it is disappointing that D&D are possibly out of a job. I don't think the show is that bad and I think their possibly ousting is a result of the overall mess going on at the show as opposed to their work. I am their lone defender and I say when their hearts are in it they are great writers. I think, if the show's days are numbered, they should do what OLTL did and promote from w/in and call it a day.
As for Sharon/Adam on Y&R, Michael Muhney is the new star of that show and they have fans. Meh!

I actually am LOVING AMC right now. I used to record it and DREAD trying to get through a weeks episodes. Now, I watch an eppy everyday.
I LOVE JR and Annie- my one complaint being they need to show them more
I LOVE LOVE the new Jake/Amanda/Griffin/Cara storyline..Jake and Amanda are one of my fav couples and I'm glad to see them get a frontburner story.
I am LOVING the way Zach's death has been handled. Alicia Minshew BETTER be up for an emmy for her work.
I'm excited for the new Scott to come on b/c I love Daniel Cosgrove and can't wait to see he and JR at each other's throats.
I actually like Caleb and Asher. I was getting tired of Damon and Colby so I'm interested in her with Asher but I wish they would've kept Damon and done a triangle or put him with Liza.
I'm loving the Madison pregnancy twist and how it'll play into Rylee and Frankie/Randy. I'm hoping for a Frankie/Madison pairing.
Let me say ONE thing that I LOVE about AMC which I don't really get from any other soap on air right now is that the residents of PineValley (for the most part) really care about each other and are friends and that is shown. The stories aren't islanded like you get on other soaps. Like Tad comforting Kendall at Krystal's. They were paying homage to Tad and Zach's history and friendship. And mentioning Myrtle and Zach's friendship at the memorial. And everyone ending up at Krystal's for a big Thanksgiving. With AMC I get the feeling that everyone in PineValley is family and when it comes down to it, they got each other's backs. Even as mad as everyone has been at Liza the past year or so..when Zach died, Tad comforted her. She and Tad are done and he's been furious with her, but when she was down and alone and grieving he was there and AMC payed homage to the love and friendship that he and Liza have had for YEARS. I don't get this feeling from other soaps where everyone is always fighting, scheming and trying to kill each other. YES, you see those things on AMC too, but at the end of the day, with PineValley I get the feeling of family, friendship and loyalty.

Shadam is must see t.v. Yes, it is wrong but I am watching whenever they are on and I only watch Y&R for them. Not really surprised that DOOL went up, you touched on the two highlights of the week Jamey, the virus story featuring Carly, Daniel and Melanie and Vivian. I wouldn't include EJ/Sami/Rafe which was the same old thing: EJ ranting and flailing like an idiot, Sami blubbering and Rafe mumbling. B&B is what it is. As for the also rans: I think GH has pretty much peaked. I think the viewers that were going to return for Jesus, er, Brenda have returned, OLTL and AMC are battling for the bottom but AMC really is bleeding out viewers. What will it take for Fronsie to wake up about this show? Yes, I blame it all on Rylee, I cannot remember viewers tuning out a pairing as badly as this one. Also I would assume that November sweeps are officially over now, right? Given the overall November numbers, I would say it was just a so-so to bad ratings sweep period for all.

I have to disagree about the mini ratings surge for Days this week, being attributable to Victor and Maggie. The promo for the week, was for The Virus storyline (the first promo that CC's been in since Feb, when Days was experiencing their rating peaks for the year. hummmmm). The virus storyline, which played out Mon-Wed, had an avg of 2.0 and 2,658,000 viewers. The ratings then dropped for Thursday and Friday, with Friday (which SOW announced as a Do Not Miss Friday, due to Maggie confronting Victor over Vivian) having the worst ratings of the week at 1.7 and 2,405,000 viewers.
One can only imagine how awesome Days sweeps numbers would have been, if they'd let the Virus storyline play out for a few weeks vs 3 days and involved more of Salem vs just Carly, Dan, Melanie and Nathan. Days seriously needs to stop undervaluing CC.

I'm with you Jamey. Shadam are hot because they are all kinds of wrong. If loving them is wrong, well I don't wanna be right. Plus, the chemistry don't lie. Muhney and Case set the screen on fiyah! It did matter to me if they were in the NOLA or in a chicken coop in the country. I could watch MM's Adam read a phone all day and SC's Sharon has chemistry with just about every actor on the show, including MS's Phyllis. I have mental fan fiction about Pharon from when they were Nick's sister-wives trying to prove his innocence.

Y&R is great right now. They are incorporating the black actors into the stories slowly now...and I'm seeing them more and more. Adam/Sharon, I don't particularly care for or HATE. I don't see what makes THIS pairing any different from any others...Everyone sees something different. Some may not see chemistry between the two, while others DO. It doesn't make the pairing "disgusting" just because some don't buy the chemistry. It's controversial definitely. However, I think Y&R is the best it's been in a few years IMO. And I'm thoroughly enjoying most of the stories. EVEN the Daisy story isn't as repulsive as it was the first time around.
SideNote....does Y&R seem so much better without Victor Newman to anyone else but me? These past few days where he's been MIA have been absolutely incredible, and an ensemble effort. WE see Phyllis, Sharon, Adam, Katherine, Jill, Cane, Lily, Sophia, Malcolm, Abby, Daniel, Daisy, Lauren, Michael, etc....and half of those we hardly EVER see.
Stay away Victor!!! *Ducks*

I think OLTL was the best soap during Nov. sweeps. and it is my must see soap above all others. Y&R did go on location and I enjoy most of the characters and stories right now. The total opposite is and has been happening on GH for a while now. Even before VMG's return was announced the writing sucked and has not improved at all.
I love listening to the DC podcasts and agree with the statement that certain actors/actresses can turn "shit into sugar". I have not heard anyone from GH be put into that category and do not expect to hear it. GH has a very talented cast but even the best on GH cannot turn the crap into anything else. The Balkan could have been a good story but now I read that Guza is re-writing it because the Balkan's identity was leaked. Of course GH does have the most 'insiders' leaking information so I take that with a GOS(grain of salt) just like all other GH rumors. I miss the good show GH used to be.

I agree this is what I watch soaps for this ain't "Little House on the Prairie" when I want sweetness and light characters skipping through tulips in a rainbow covered sky I know where to go. Part of the genre has always been down and dirty.
...They smoked ...Sharon Case is one of the few on daytime that can work a love scene and so can Michael Muhney it was well done. I think they have insane chemistry...and the storyline is good not that superficial nonsense they did with Elizabeth/Nikolas with almost the same scenario what a huge difference in the writing in these two fall from grace storylines. Y/R isn't a hatchet job so their selected character can shine while throwing other character under a freight train.
IA,the NO location is breathtakingly beautiful the perfect backdrop for a love scene and also responsible for the hike.
Hey they did show Black folk Jamey..LoL the carriage driver and the funeral...
But the difference for me is the writing how I bought everything Adam was selling, he's a good rapper...and you've said they played all or most of the beats in this story. This is what soap opera does best... Its time American soaps get back to what made them soap operas in the first place. All Sharon said is Adam didn't do this and I know Skye isn't dead and is faking her death.
Yes he did a dastardly deed I agree he's nefarious but this is what makes the story for me, its a bad romance.
Also in my interpretation, this storyline is about redemption so I find redemption storylines challenging..."how or if" I could forgive this character, a man who has done something so horrific as faking a child's death and giving the baby to someone else. Is this redemption working? I saw a sly smile from Adam when he was being released so for a moment I thought he was playing her. Either way whether he's been reformed or not "its a good story" and that is what I watch soaps for "the stories." Also Sharon will be ostracized so this is another good part of the story for me. I don't like the part of her forsaking her children and choosing Adam over them but this is part of them becoming the town's pariahs.
I am impressed with Tristan's Colin arrival as well this week and hope for a bump from his fans.
I like Victor/Maggie as well...I enjoy their story immensely; I'm glad DOL doesn't think their fans don't want to see multi-generational love stories. I like to hear John Aniston say "Maggee" these are two of my favorite characters on daytime.
I agree the virus could have lasted a tad longer. Tired of the EJ/Sammi here we go round the mulberry bush with those kids. I like Kate/DiMera interactions.
I'm newly back into Days after an over the decade hiatus still learning but after being beat up and battered around by GH it feels good.

stoney, you're not the only one who thinks Y&R is a lot better when Eric Braeden and his ego aren't eating up the show. I loved last year when he was off-screen for three months.
